Win XP SP3 Network Printer Problems
by Guest WayneO- 0 replies
Our organisation has recently begun rolling out Windows XP SP3. After installation some PC's , but not all, experience a printing issue where it just doesnt print. Some reported saying that no default printer was installed but it was according to Printers and faxs. Our tempory solution is to delete the printer and re-connect. As we have a relatively large computer and User base this is very time consuming for users and IT staff. Some of the connected Printers also fail to delete making the process a bit more frustrating. Does anyone have a better fix for this?

I'm running WinXP on three different networked computers at home. Everything's fine so I have no reason to upgrade to Vista. But i got to wondering how long Microsoft is going to continue to support XP. So that I'd have to upgrade, like it or not. Anybody know the answer to this?

Out of memory
by Guest tshad- 2 replies
On XP SP2, I typically have quite a few windows open and every now and then run out of memory. I was opening an email from outlook and got the error message. I closed my Sql Server Management Studio program that had just opened a table with 3000 records. I was able then to open the email fine. But when I looked at my Windows Task Manager: It showed: Comment Charge(k) Total 1461856 Threads 4553192 Peak 1674268 I thought that Peak showed what the most memory I had used at any one time and it was fine if less than the Limit (4553192). My peak is way below that. Am I mistaken here? Thanks, Tom

retrieving files from F.A.S.T.
by Guest bairborne- 0 replies
A friend of mine backed up my old computer onto an external hard drive using the F.A.S.T. program. I really didn't need it because I'm not to worried about all of the settings and stuff. I really just want all of my files (music, pictures, programs, etc...). The new computer that I'm using doesn't even have enought drive space for all of it. I really just want to be able to unpack the files so that I can put them into seperate folders and be able to load the ones that I want onto my new computer, and just access the rest on the external hard drive. Can anyone help me in doing this? Thanks! v/r, brian

Windows XP Corrupt Profiles
by Guest Cary K- 2 replies
We have a remote facility that is experiencing an issue with profiles on Windows XP clients becoming corrupt. The pc's are a member of our domain, and are shared amoung about 15 people, none of which are using roaming profiles. We are aware of how to fix the profile issues once they occur, but we are looking more into what could be causing the profiles to become corrupt in the first place. Thus far, all of our web searches for information have only come up with how to fix the profiles or the typical "Microsoft sucks" type of comments. Any help, advice, comments, or a direction to go would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My Documents missing from My Computer - SP3 Issue?
by Guest MarvinLittlewood- 1 reply

Hi! This is a new twist on an old problem - there are related posts from 2004 & 2005 but having tried all the suggestions with no luck, I am posting this. I have WinXP Pro SP3 installed, with an admin user © and a limited user (M) in addition to the usual Administrator account. C can see all the other users' documents under the heading: "Files Stored on this Computer". M can only see "Shared Documents". M's side bar shows "My Documents" and links correctly to the desired target folder. For M, using RegEdit to look at the registry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths has the correct entry. Also: HKLM\Software\Micr…

Installing MS Office Software on new computer question....
by Guest Pinger- 10 replies

I've got a Dell with XP that's going on 6 years old and has issues. I've found that the new systems do not bundle software the way they used to and that Microsoft Office is an added expense. I'm staying with Windows XP; the guy I spoke with told me that the software that was bundled with my old machine---for which I have the CD's--will only load on the machine for which it was originally intened---and it would not load on the machine that I'm about to purchase. This may well me true, but is news to me. Can anyone in the know verify that for me? pinger

HELP! Can't replace corrupt urlmon.dll
by Guest Nardar- 1 reply
I hope someone can help me!!! For the last few days, I've been trying to figure out how to replace what I believe is a corrupt urlmon.dll file. A number of programs (including Windows Explorer, System Restore, Palm Desktop, RegCure, Norton Anti-Virus Scan and others ...) begin to load, but then send me to an error message. (Firefox and Thunderbird work just fine.) When I go to eventvwr, I find the following message: Windows cannot access the file c:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or …

by Guest kulamonster- 1 reply

Ok here is my dilemma, Went to turn on my computer last night and it booted to windows just fine. I was in the middle of a virus scan and spyware scan when the entire computer locked up. Could not get out of it by any means except hitting the power button for 8 sec. (Which I really hate to do!!!) Upon reboot, I received the lovely BSOD 0x00000024...Corrupt NTFS file system. So I was like oh great, just what I need!! Not panicking, I pulled out my trusty WinXP disk, booted to Recovery Console.....tried running a Chkdsk /r and it says that there are 1 or more unrecoverable errors with the drive. (now some concern) So I tried booting into BARTPE and it w…

I'd like to use it to backup too and to view/use files from such as videos/music. I would need a very stable & reliable network that would handle this. What are my options? -- Man oh man!

How to find application that is calling for a missing file?
by Guest otcmx- 2 replies
My problem started when my antivirus detected a trojan virus on a file gdcyxydi.dll located in system32 folder. I tried to heal the file but wasn't successful. I quarantined the file and deleted it. Now everytime I started my computer, I received an error missing file gdcyxydi.dll. So somewhere in my computer, an application is calling for this file on Windows startup. My question is, how do I find out which application is calling for this file? So that I can remove this application or re-install it. I'm currently using Windows XP professional. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Windows XP Hangs After Logon "Personalizing Internet Explorer" (Custom Shell) I work for an OEM that uses a Windows XP system to control a piece of manufacturing equipment. During system setup we change the default system shell (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell) to our user interface application (A .NET 2.0 Application) When customers logon to the system with a new account (i.e. a new user, one that has never been used), 1 out of about 10 times the "Personalized Settings" window appears (upper left corner of the screen) and stops at Internet Explorer. In some cases we've waited upto 2 hours, and the shell never starts. …

I've started a high-level inventory of my PC laptop. I used add/remove programs as the starting point to list the applications. The other part is an inventory of C:drive files/folders. One objective for the work is to get a better understand of where things are and how they're used for backup and recovery purposes. Using Outlook as an example, it would be nice to know where all the components are stored that have some sort of settings or user data. I know about the .pst files, what they contain, and where they're located but don't know where settings (accounts, etc.) are stored. I'll get the knowledge about individual applications via posts specifi…

I booted into Safe Mode and installed all of the drivers for the new motherboard(USB/Video etc) Reboot and get the same Blue Screen Reboot into Safe Mode and it says I have to Activate and that I cannot do it in Safe Mode. I guess I should have tracked down the offending drivers/hardware before installing all of the new ones, but what do I do now?

Downloading SP2
by Guest RN1- 5 replies
I have been trying to download WinXP Pro SP2 since last 3 hours or so but it's just refusing to download. I am using IE6 to download SP2 (by navigating to the Tools-->Windows Update menu) & when I click a button to download SP2, a modal window having a status bar (which shows the progress of the download) comes up but the status bar doesn't indicate the progress at all. As a result, I am not sure whether anything is being downloaded or not in the first place. Can someone please give me some idea on what could be going on? This is the 4th time I am trying to download SP2 in my WinXP Pro m/c. BTW, IE says that it will take me about 2.5 hours to download SP…

I would like to know if Microsft still tracks activation of copies of Windows XP. Do they still care if more than one computer is using the same copy. I'm assuming that since Vista is now available, they may relax the rules for using XP.

I am having a problem with service pack 3. Here is some background: I am running Windows XP Home edition. I have Microsoft Office Pro 2000 installed. I also have a software package that uses Microsoft Excel called “Handicap Manager”, which is a golf program to keep my handicap. Normally I just click on the desktop icon and my Handicap Manager works just fine. In addition, when I am sent a Power Point presentation in an email, I just double click on the power point presentation and it opens with my Microsoft Office Pro 2000 Power Point. The problem began the moment the Microsoft Service Pack 3 was installed. The moment it was installed I could …

Program Access and Defaults Settings Displayed Incorrectly
by Guest Dick K- 0 replies

My XP MCE SP3 system has developed a problem - Program Access and Default settings are displayed incorrectly. Changes still seem to work and are reflected in, for example, Firefox's and Mozilla's initial checks to determine whether they have default program status. However, on returning to Program Access and Defaults, whatever the real settings are, the configuration is displayed as "Custom" and the program defaults as "Use my current...." (Web browser, e-mail program, etc, etc). Any ideas on how to correct the problem please? -- Thanks for any suggestions. Dick K
