New XP Update yesterday - today won't boot
by Guest nnord- 1 reply

Hi - I can't boot up my XP Home today - it hangs after I click my User icon, and never reads "Loading ..." Yesterday it installed a Windows automatic update when I turned it off in the morning. Anyone had any similar problems? I"ve started up, pressing F8 to get in Safe Mode, and then I've tried "Last known good configuration", but think I tried that after too many restart attempts, because it made no difference. I"ve tried "System Restore Point" from 2 days ago, but that "failed". Next, I will try to remove yesterday's Update Any ideas?

Re: Automated System Recovery [X-post to WinXP General] System Restore's Restore Points do NOT back-up any data; cf. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/filesfolders.html When SP3 (and most other updates) is installed, a Restore Point will be created automatically. However, it is not necessarily a wise idea to "undo" the install of SP3 via using that Restore Point. Internet Explorer accessibility
by Guest Bigben7- 2 replies

Hi, I'm having trouble with my internet connection. I run two machines, one laptop which is connecting perfectly, and a desktop which is not. The desktop says that it has an excellent connection (54.0 mbps). I have been through the phone support with linksys (I am able to ping myself, yahoo.com, google.com, with no problems), so they dumped me. However, my explorer says basically that though I have a wireless connection, I do not have an internet connection. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you so much for your time, and any ehlp is greatly appreciated. Ben

Cannot start Help and Support
by Guest chili15- 9 replies

When I try to access Help and Support I get the following message:( Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named Help and Support.) I have typed in Run:services.msc, and found Help and Support set on automatic. I have tried a number of reg edits from the Registry XP tweaks site, but nothing seems to help. Would it help if I re-installed Service Pack 2, and if I did would I lose any of my programs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I remember when you first install xp you are asked whether you want the administrator account to be hidden. My question is how to hide the default administrator account later on --- after the OS is already installed and running.

Win Explorer does NOT default to My Documents
by Guest chamois988- 7 replies

I've read many of the threads about changing the default folder when Win Explorer is opened to another folder. Presumably My Documents is the default, but in my case, it isn't!! I just got a new PC and it defaults to the Start Up folder. I know how to change the target link to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents BUT I would prefer if it opened up at the very top, with the My Documents standard icon right underneath Desktop, instead of further down the tree under Local Disk>Document Settings>etc. Anyone know what to do?

What is this new "l2schemas" folder?
by Guest John Corliss- 6 replies
After I installed SP3 for XP (I'm running the Home Edition), I noticed a new folder: c:\windows\l2schemas My copy of Firefox 3 started doing weird things after a while (fields were the wrong size on websites like Google, so I couldn't enter search terms). After trying several other tactics (rebooting, reinstalling FF3, etc.) I backed up and deleted the l2schemas folder and the problems with FF3 went away. Then, I restored the folder, and strangely enough the problem didn't come back. I've looked and looked to find out what this l2schemas folder is supposed to be for, but can find absolutely NO information about it. I detest and hate not knowing what …

User file locations
by Guest JSD- 6 replies

First let me say that my computer knowledge is limited to spreadsheets and Word documents, with a general knowledge of other computer functions. I have Windows XP on my home computer that is used by my son, my wife and myself. My son accidentally deleted his login and account. I created a new one for him but now his files are located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Bobby.BOBBY\My Documents". Previously they were located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Bobby\My Documents". Is there some place where I can go to change the path back to the old one? Thanks for any help you can give me.
