Recovering from a fatal error (trojan and virus)
by Guest larry_lavaughn- 9 replies

I had a catastrophic trojan error a few days back. Here's my system: 2 Maxtor sata drives (6l200mo {200gb sata}, 6l300so {300gb sata} 1 WD 400bb {40gb IDE} AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ (2.0ghz); I just got another 2 gb of ram installed, so I'm up to 3 gb; my mobo is a Fatality an8-sli. Before the fatal error, I was running the 200gb as my Windows drive and the 300gb held all my games, music and photos and stuff like that. I was using the 40gb IDE drive as a strict system swap drive, to offload all the work from the 200gb and not keep it filled. I had an adminstrator account and a Winlogon password... after redoing the 40 and using that as my Windows drive now, …

Multiple Monitor Problem
by Guest SoDakRah- 3 replies
I am setting up a system with four monitors using two Radeon Sapphire graphics cards. However, we need to use the video port on the motherboard as the primary screen for a total of five monitors. When I plug everything in and install the drivers i reboot and monitor 2 comes up to the Windows XP loading screen. Then blanks out and none of the screens show anything. All monitor power lights are amber except for monitor two which is green but the screen is black. Any ideas?

Multiple Monitors To Include Onboard Video Card?
by Guest PeteCresswell- 5 replies

Got an add-on graphics card (Radeon 7000, PCI slot) in my new PC. This card was moved from my old PC. Somehow, on the old PC, I had managed to get three monitors working: - Two on the Radeon card - One on the PC's built-in graphics processor I'd like to do the same thing on the new PC - which is showing only the two monitors on the graphics card. Anybody been here?

Start Bar -> Right-Click -> Close does a Restore...
by Guest Riaan- 4 replies

Hello all, Here is my setup: Windows XP Media Center SP 2. ----- The Problem: When I have multiple folders open, it shows as a single program on the Start Bar. When I left-click on the list, I see a list of the folders. If I right-click on any of the background items in the list and select Close, it restores that window instead of closing it. This is really annoying. It started happening after some update a few months ago. I found that this happens now on Windows 2003 and Windows XP Pro/Home machines. It used to work. Does anyone have a fix/solution for this?

Does Indexing Service do any good
by Guest chasgl- 8 replies

I don't want to sound like a basher but I just can't imagine it does any good. Any time I search explorer still crawls though the disk one folder at a time. But I am still a little afraid ot kill it so I'm asking if it ever does anything good. My desire to kill it comes from my belief that it is one of the reasons (clearly not the only) XP sometimes goes so S_L_O_W. Task manager at those times shows usage at 100% and explorer at 95% to 99%. Any thoughts? Thanks, Chas

Something is changing the reg key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3\1803 from the desried value of 0 to 3 which prevents IE Downloads. I have a GPO that should be setting this key value to 0 but the only way i can achieve this is by using the command gpupdate /force /target:user. A logoff/logon or reboot does not overwrite the registry setting. Is this a bug ? Ideally i'd like to identify what is changing the key in the first place, any pointers on how to achieve this would also be much appreciated.

I used to have 3 external USB hard drives permanentaly connected to my computer and I had one USB drive that I would connect off and on. I am intending to consolidate all my external drives and have 'ejected' all of them. I also went into Disk Mgmt and disabled them. However, My computer and also Disk Mgmt. still lists "G, H, I, J" drive. If I add another drive, it shows up as K or later. Oh, I also went into the registry to delete the references there. How can I get rid of G, H, I, J and free them up for re-use ? Thanks,

Firewire enclosure replacement
by Guest Lil' Dave- 19 replies

Recently had to replace a firewire hard drive external enclosure. The original, I simply turned it on while in XP, ran my imaging software and let it verify the image when done. All was normal, no problems. Set for quick removal in device manager by XP. The replacement, keeps bringing up a bogus new hardware found. Never finds any driver including internet. I tried removing the hard drive entry and the SBP entry in device manager. After reboot, I turn the firewire enclosure on, and it does the same thing all over again. Hard disk and SBP entries are there, same bogus new hardware. Image file verification fails everytime on that hard drive when de…
