Default Printer issue with Roaming Profile
by Guest Jordan- 0 replies
I have a user with a roaming profile that is using 3 computers in an area - Station 1, 2, and 3. Since the area is far from the main multifunction network printer we installed an HP Laserjet on Station1 and set Station 2 and 3 to print to \\STATION1\HPLaserjet (HP Laserjet on Station1). For backup incase the laserjet jams up or toner is out or whatever, we also added the network main multifunction printer - KonicaCopier. This printer uses TCP/IP printing - RAW on Port 9100. Now when this user goes from computer to computer, they cannot seem to keep their default printer to be the HPLaserjet on Station1. I believe it is because on Station1 the printer…

Locking down CD roms, USB mass storage devices and Floppy disk dri
by Guest Jordan Fey- 2 replies
I'm in a very security concious company which wants access to CD-Rom drives, floppy disk drives & USB mass storage devices restricted to the majority of machines. This is easy enough in itself, Ive used an group policy ADM to set the "start" values for "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR", "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom", "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Flpydisk" and "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Sfloppy" accordingly so as the devices are disabled via registry. The issue I have is granting access to those users who are authorised to use these devices. At present I am applying these settings individually to different OU's h…

KB951978 Doesn't Make Sense
by Guest Gis Bun- 5 replies
Looking at KB951978 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951978), it states the update affects Vista SP1, Win 2K8 and Win XP SP3. Yet the first section states that it doesn't apply. But there is an update only for http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=705e21de-f7dc-4d19-aafc-f22d3fca772f&DisplayLang=en [nothing shows up in the catalog for any OS]. If you try and install the update, you get an error message that the version of IE is incorrect. Weird.

XP Reinstall question
by Guest Dudley Henriques- 10 replies

Just thought of something that might need an answer please. I'm a Microsoft MVP recipient for Flight Simulator 2007. I maintain a highly dedicated OFF LINE PC that is used ONLY for flight simulator work. I've opted to keep Windows XP installed rather than install Vista due to stability issues with Vista. Presently I have Service Pack 2 installed. I notice there is a SP3 now available for XP. Question concerns what happens if I have to reinstall XP for some reason. As I said, I keep this PC off line deliberately and use MACS for all my on line work, so the PC has no AV protection. If I have to reinstall XP, is it possible to get SP3 on a DVD from Microsof…

Install XP on a Vista laptop?
by Guest JMF- 14 replies
I bought XP Pro for my desktop. Now I'm in the market for a new laptop. The new laptops seem only to have Vista on them. I'm curious about removing the OEM Vista and replacing it with my XP Pro that I bought. That raises two questions: - am I allowed to take the XP Pro that I bought and also install it on my laptop? - what kind of trouble am I asking for (and I'm sure there is trouble, ranging from "some" to "plenty") by replacing the original OEM Vista with XP Pro? Thanks for any inputs/opinions/facts. John

Re: Attempt to activate XP Pro fails with Out of Box Experience qu I know this is an old thread but the mystery was cleared up and I wanted to let you know what happened. As a reminder, I was having problems right after an upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. I was getting all sorts of problems from all sorts of applications. The problem turned out to be with IE and the upgrade. I had installed IE7 on my XP Home system. The upgrade CD had IE6. I've come to learn that what I should have done was uninstall IE7 and then do the upgrade (or MSFT should have made the install "smarter" to see IE7 and not try to install IE6 components). The problems this ca…

Very slow response to Keyboard entries
by Guest bnmohan via WindowsKB.com- 8 replies

Hi! 4 June 2008 My brand new Dell Vostro Notebook with T7250 at 2.4 and 3gb ram running XP Prof with SP2 has a slow response to keyboard entries: In any application, when anything is typed on the keyboard, it is echoed after a delay of 2 to 3 seconds. So much so that whole words are typed in, but there is nothing on the screen. No characters are lost: everything appears after the usual delay. Would there be any setting in XP that could cause this? Strange XP issue. Black screen after windows XP logo
by Guest Dawn- 1 reply
I have had this happen on 3 systems within the last months. 2 were IBM Thinkpads T61p's and one was a Dell Optiplex 745. I am not sure what is causing this except that many posts on the internet point to video. I am able to start in safemode, and have changed my msconfig to use the /basevideo option but that has not worked at all. I give on this....it seems strange that quite a few people have posted within the month of June on this similar problem. All of my systems were XP Pro Sp2...nto Sp3.

Problems Searching a phrase
by Guest Marc S- 5 replies

I am searching thru Word Perfect documents. I realize Windows XP Pro has changed it's searching component (Q309173), and I successfully made this change. This fixes searching for single words, but when searching "multiple words" aka "a phrase", I get nothing. Is there something I'm missing, or a recommneded tool to use. Thanks.

Remote assistance between XP and Vista machines
by Guest Olumide- 3 replies
Hello, A friend needs me to help troubleshoot an application on his Windows Vista machine. I have an XP machine, and both of happen to use routers at home (he lives in a different city), and neither of us have unique IP addresses, just local IP addresses and the address of our routers. Connecting to each others machines is therefore a bit tricky. I'd appreciate help in starting a remote assistance session with him. Thanks, - Olumide

Differing speed of RAM cards
by Guest Gnarlodious- 2 replies
I installed a 512 RAM card some time ago and XP ran real good. Now a computer tech who I am not sure I trust as found the card and blamed it for a software registration error. He removed the 512 card (actually a DDR 400mhz) and explained that it is the "wrong speed and not recognized by Windows". He says even though the numbers on the System Control Panel match the RAM Windows still ignores it. This sounds bogus to me, is he lying? Do RAM cards need to be matched in speed? I would rather upgrade to faster rather than use the old slow cards. Thanks.

Loading Microsoft Office on system
by Guest Pinger- 3 replies

I've got a Dell with XP that's going on 6 years old and has issues. I've found that the new systems do not bundle software the way they used to and that Microsoft Office is an added expense. I'm staying with Windows XP; the guy I spoke with told me that the software that was bundled with my old machine---for which I have the CD's--will only load on the machine for which it was originally intened---and it would not load on the machine that I'm about to purchase. This may well me true, but is news to me. Can anyone in the know verify that for me? pinger

RAM upgrade
by Guest tuuf- 9 replies

Maybe it's just bad luck but the 2 times I've tried to upgrade my computer's ram it has not been successful. When you receive a factory computer is the ram matched better? On my older HP pc I upgraded from 512 to 1GB and it seemed to run slower. On my current HP m9040n it has 3GB and I tried to upgrade to 4GB and it seems a little slower also. The bios says I have 4GB but "system" under control manger says I have 3.25GB. Should all the memory be the same brand? mike

I just bought 2x512 ddr400/pc2300 Corsair XMS 3200LL modules, and after doing quite a bit of Googling, I am no further forward in determing the "best" settings in bios, and indeed, my bios has slightly ambiguous labels which are hard to match up with, tRCD, tRP and tRAS etc. http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/64 i.e Which one is which ? If I set bios to use SPD, Lavalys Everest "motherboard" ICH5 reports :- Memory Timings: CAS Latency (CL) 2T RAS To CAS Delay (tRCD) 2T RAS Precharge (tRP) 2T RAS Active Time (tRAS) 5T ??? I've just set manually in bios:- (Below is how …

Msconfig,cmd cannot open, computer restarts
by Guest phagoo@gmail.com- 2 replies

hey i'm running XP Pro sp2 and anytime i start my pc it takes a really long time to start. normally it takes 30 seconds but this time , up to the screensaver loads then the pc stops loading for almost 3 minutes. Then the basic startup items load and the pc finally runs as normal. However, thinking that this is a startup problem, i attempted to solve this through msconfig.exe . but when i open the program through Start>Run, the computer shuts down and restarts. I experienced the same problem with running Command Line. I even tried to restore my system to an earlier date but when the pc restarted while restoring, it stuck again during the loading stage. Whe…

When I go to Printers and Faxes I get an error about the Spooler SubSystem App has encountered an error and must close... I'm unable to add any printers or delete any existing printers (only one listed at the moment - a network printer if that is important) If I restart the Print spooler service it doesn't stay started. The following kb article 324757 doesn't not resolve the issue. I did notice there were two Windows NT x86 registry keys found here: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\ Why are there two? There are no Drivers key found below Windows NT x86. How can I solve this issue of Spooler SubSytem App error? Thanks. …
