Dell D630 cannot hot undock "nicely"
by Guest Audrey- 0 replies

I have multiple users with dual monitor display settings using the Dell D630. When they try to hot undock (which this model is supposed to be able to do), either by going to the start menu undock button, or by pressing the undock request button on the dock, everything looks like it goes fine until they try to remove the computer from the dock. The new hardware install/uninstall goes crazy, the display flickers, then goes dark. It will sit there with no display until you cold boot the system. Everything is fine after that, but I have users that dock and undock 10+ times throughout the day! Shutting down everytime is just not feasible. I have been on with…

Touchpad in a Acer Aspire 5670 laptop.
by Guest Prieto Chulo- 3 replies

My touchpad doesn't work in normal mode. To use my laptop I have to startup in safe mode. I tried to install the drivers, follow manufacturer recommendations regarding basic troubleshooting and still doesn't work properly. I downloaded a software named "driveragent" and basically tells me that more than half of all my device drivers are defective or not updated. Even trying to download the drivers is a problem because sometimes I need the Original Windows recovery disk and since the laptop required to burn them at the fist startup and I didn't, now I have a bigger problem. Do you have a hint how to fix the touchpad?

Parallel port service cannot start
by Guest Scott S.- 0 replies

I recently built a new computer for a customer using the Asus P5E-WS Professional Motherboard. As is the case nowadays the board had no parallel port. The customer uses a piece of DOS based engineering software that has a parallel port (LPT1) authentication dongle. I installed a PCI-e adaptor and all appeared to go well however the software wouldn’t read the dongle. The device manager shows the card installed and working but when I went to the show hidden devices in the device manager it shows the parallel port driver cannot start. The event viewer shows The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices …

Hi, I'm trying to install a a SDHC All-in-one USB2.0 card reader in winxp sp2. The problem is when I plug the card reader in windows states "USB Device not recognised". It appears under device manager as an unknown device. It doesn't appear under "My Computer". I've tried it on all usb ports, but still doesn't work and I know that the reader is OK as I've tried it on another pc. I don't know if the following info is of any help, but the USB controller is SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller. Thankyou for any help!

Long delay opening file types using DDE
by Guest ajkessel- 0 replies
Using various utilities (Launchy, Google Desktop), I get a five to ten second delay opening various file types (Excel, Word, http links). If I modify the file association and force it not to use DDE, all of these file types open very quickly. Is there any way to troubleshoot why attempted DDE connections run so slowly? I don't see any unusual activity in Process Explorer. I expect it is just timing out and giving up, but I can't figure out why. Sometimes the delay is as long as fifteen seconds.

User account not available
by Guest sunprince- 3 replies

I am not sure what to call this or what the trouble is so I will try to give every detail that I can. I have two user accounts. Account W, Account P, Both have administrator status. And up until just this morning both worked fine. User account W is set up with work related shortcut links, and background on desktop. User account P is set up with personal links and background on desktop. This morning my work related user account is somehow not accessible. It was just fine yesterday. But something happened between the time that I last logged in yesterday and today that made user account W quit working. Both user accounts appear on the log in selector screen and …

This applies to XP as well as Vista, the solution (if there is one) may also work for both, that's why I decided to crosspost instead of posting a separate question for each OS. I took some screenshots to explain clearer what I'm looking for, http://users.telenet.be/eurautomat-lucvdv/XP_startmenu/ For those who prefer text: Has someone found a way to add new top-level menus to the start menu, the way you could in Win2000, and still can in XP and Vista if you switch to the "classic" start menu?

network security and access
by Guest gordon- 1 reply

Hi I would like to allow some users of computers in my home network to access certain folders and to deny other uses. I have 6 Xp based machines that use wired and wireless connections. I have a workgroup called MSHOME, my router is dlink DSL G604T. I have disabled the simple sharing so I can provide different permissions to users, and that works for users on this machine but I dont know how to do this for users that will connect from other machines in the network. When I try to find users to add, I cannot change the location to find their details from this machine. For example, one of the machines is called FEGEXP - how can I give a user of th…

Hi, Myself and others are having an issue on another Microsoft newsgroup with the "New Question"'s "Notify me of replies" feature. We are not getting notified. A moderator in that group asked if I could post to another newsgroup and see if I get an email notification from that group. This is the reason for my post today. Could you please reply to this post (for testing purposes)? Fyi, I have checked the "Notify me of replies" checkbox now. Thank you for your assistance. Regards, Bret

General instructions to re-install Windows XP
by Guest tcarp- 18 replies
I'm on the journey to learn about doing a WinXP full install. I've actually done this once (without choice) on my laptop when attempting to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. As I've been doing research on the web, it appears doing a periodic full reinstall of Win isn't such a bad idea. My question is about the process. The way I did it I had to reinstall all Windows upgrades and then the applications and upgrades after the Win install. I also had to make settings like Outlook email accounts, etc. Not such a big deal but for weeks after there were little omissions (Adobe Reader, irfanview, etc.) that I had to reinstall. So the process generally was…

Virtual PC 2007 keyboard stops responding
by Guest Jiri Dohnal- 11 replies
Hello, I have a strange problem - after some time my Virtual PC 2007's (version 6.0.156.0) keyboard stops responding in windowed mode. I have to switch to fullscreen mode where the keyboard responds again. Switching back to windowed mode stops it responding again and vice versa. The only way is to restart Virtual PC (not only a windows XP session but also close the console). The time after which it happens is various, mainly after longer inactivity time, maybe the screenserver plays a role because it happens always after returning back from the screensaver mode. Anyone having the same problems? Thanx ahead.

OEM Reactivation on a new system - Upgrade or full retail?
by Guest Bill Mathews- 16 replies
I have Win XP Pro in an OEM version that came with my current system. I'm thinking about replacing the motherboard to get increased system performance, which would require a reactivation of Windows. As I understand it, an OEM version of Windows is tied to the original system in a way that prevents it from being reactivated on what Windows would see as a new system - i.e., one with a new motherboard. So I'm assuming I'd need to buy a new copy of Windows. So, 3 questions: 1. Which retail version of Windows XP Pro would I need to buy? The upgrade, or a full version? 2. Should I install the new copy of Windows before or after I do the mobo upgrade? 3.…

Want Explorer.exe to launch when connecting digital camera....
by Guest Guitarmakermark- 0 replies

Hi, Folks.... When I connect my Nikon Coolpix S550 camera via usb to my computer, (xp home sp2,) I get a dialog asking me to choose between Scanners and Cameras Wizard and another imaging handling program. Problem is, I don't want either of these two programs to launch by default when the camera is connected; I want only Windows Explorer to launch, so that I may treat the camera as just another drive in which to choose which files to transfer. Do I need to edit the Registry to fix this, or is there something else to try. If a registry tweak is called for, can someone please instruct me? I'm familiar with editing the registry. Thanks! Mark
