I am fixing a friends laptop that has xp pro. I put a mini wireless pci card in it. He has forgotten his username/password to log in . He used it on a network so if I try to click cancel it doesn't bypass the log in screen. I have tried safemode and windows but can't get past the screen. He doesn't remember the admin password or his. Is there a way to get past this? Thanks, John

I cannot print documents from XP programs (Word converted from WordPerfect); and the document freezes up (not responding message) and I have to close it. It's not the printer; i've reinstalled the driver and did a test page and it worked. I also had printed stuff before it decided not to print anymore. I gotta get some resumes out!

32 bit to 64 bit in XP Pro
by Guest DJ Bing- 3 replies
Hi, I am considering changing the OS from 32 to 64 bit. I have heard that XP Pro will only use 3.5GB of 4GB memory and I would like to make use of every MB I can. What are the pitfalls of changing over to 64 bit and is there a program that will check to make sure existing programs drivers are supported? Cheers, DJ Bing

Suddenly unable to remote into desktop
by Guest jc- 1 reply
Up until the other day I could remote into my desktop. I'm running xp pro. I checked and remote access is enabled and my user is allowed. I check and no apparently firewall is running on my desktop... though not 100% sure how to check in xp. From my desktop I can remote out to other stations both inside and outside our firewall. But when I attempt to remote into my desktop (even from my desktop).. it tries for a few seconds and comes right back with no warning, error or even an eventlog entry. I've rebooted and relogged in with no help.

Recover Deleted WinXP
by Guest Harry- 5 replies

Hi all, Sorry if this is a stoopid question. I have been given two desktop computers that were each supplied with operating system when new. The Windows licences are valid for just those two machines. The previous owners have since scrapped the two computers, and gave them to me. I have the machines and even the licence, but the previous owner used a hammer and nail to prevent the hard disks being re-used (to protect sensitive information). Q Since I have the computers and the licences, is there any way to get the operating systems installed in these two machines without having to buy two new XP installations? To buy them would cost me SEK3000, whic…

XP Boots Up only to Splash Screen
by Guest palm harbor- 1 reply
I am running XP Home Edition in Boot Camp on a new iMAC. All seemed well until SP3. Now, when I try to boot up, the Spash Screen comes up with the progress bars and never gets further. I have to try a cold start a couple of times, and sometimes it will then boot up normally. A restore point doesn't help. A Microsoft technican added some update that changed a lot of registry settings, and it worked ok for a while, but now the problem is back again. The Boot Camp is current. Any thoughts?

Wake up from Hibernate
by Guest Don Madsen- 1 reply
When my system is in hibernate it wakes automatically during the night.Hibernate can be entered with the Power On/Off button or from the start meny using the shift key and that does not matter. I have not been able to find anything in the BIOS that would obviously cause this problem. USB connections include printers, scanners, an external hard drive (turned off) and a DSL modem, Motherboard options to wake are not selected. What causes this behavior in the XP system?

Won't pickup DHCP address 1 2
by Guest JohnB- 25 replies

I am fixing a computer for a friend. The PC is running XP Pro, SP2. It was infected with a bunch of viruses. After a lot of research, the fix turned out to be something called SDfix.exe. The computer uses McAfee and all it was doing was deleting viruses by the thousands.... over and over. Then I ran the SDfix and all that stopped. There were no more problems, except one; the computer will not get a DHCP address from the router. I can put in a static IP address and it works fine. Put it back to DHCP and it doesn't get an address. I tried resetting the IP static using netsh. That didn't work. Has anyone seen this before? This is not a router i…

Using XP SP3 and Firefox. Everytime my computer boots up, my browser starts up and goes to the Sunbelt Software FAQ page. Using msconfig, I've searched through all the tabs (startup, win.ini, boot.ini, system.ini) but can't find anything that is causing this to occur. Any suggestions where else I can search to find what's causing this? TXS

SP-3? This sucks
by Guest ManyBeers- 15 replies

I just downloaded and installed SP 3 for XP and my Windows startup sound is gone and the old Windows startup sound has been restored by SP 3. WHY? How does the startup sound matter to the operating system? The problem is i used a top fuel dragster starting for my startup sound and i did not keep a copy. The only copy i had was in Windows/media folder and is now gone. I spent a lot of time on the Internet tracking down the right sounding track and legal as well. Where would the SP 3 installation put deleted files? Or are the files gone.

I have three computers, all XP sp3. Since updating to SP3 the two notebooks do not respond to my P&P Kodak computer when it is plugged into the USB port. The desktop responds as before and recognizes the type camera and will download the pictures. Both notebooks have USB mouse and it works fine. What steps should I follow to correct this? I do not want to install the Kodak Easyshare program and never have on either computer. -- Gerald Ross Cochran, GA Tis better to have loved a short than to never have loved a tall.

I encounter this problem when I try to boot up or restart my PC, Login page does not shows up ( I was stuck in between Microsoft logo and login page but the mouse is still moving, it seems that windows is active but cant show the login). What I have done to be able to login again is to boot on safe mode and use system restore to return to its previous setting. By the way, I didnt change any settings when I have rebooted and started to encounter this problem. It just suddenly happened. Can you help how to prevent this problem without using system restore

OldSchool Windows Command Prompt question
by Guest Danger_Duck- 3 replies
In general, is there a way so I can configure command prompt to compile files into a different directory than the one the file is in? For instance, say Inside the folder "C:\JavaPrograms\Example" I have example.java and I would like to place the compiled example.class into the bin directory. Instead of having to manually drag the .class files to and from the folder "C:\JavaPrograms\Example\bin" so I can run 'java example' (when command prompt is currently in C:\JavaPrograms\Example), is there a way to set command prompt to compile from src (or root folder) and put the compiled classes into the bin directory? Or, for that matter, can anyone suggest a…

Windows Search 4.0 not indexing Outlook mailboxes
by Guest Marc- 1 reply

Hi, after installing Windows Search 4.0 final over the preview version, search no longer indexes my Outlook 2003 mailboxes. Outlook does not even show up in the search options as a location to be indexed. With preview, everything worked fine and with the Computer Policy Editor I activated indexing delegate mailboxes as well and was happy. Now it drives my crazy. I already uninstalled and reinstalled but had no luck. Anybody experienced the same thing or has any idea on how to get Outlook back into Search ? Thanks & Best regards Marc
