by Guest Stephen Blakley- 17 replies

Recently, my computer downloaded Service Pack 3. Then I noticed that when I go to use a program I purchased (a golf handicap system) that a window would come up which wanted me to install Microsoft Excel 2003. I was not able to access this program. HOWEVER, if I access mu 2000 installed Mircosoft Excel, I have no problem opening spreadsheets. I did a system restore to before Service Pack 3 was installed and my golf handicap system is working just fine now. Can anyone give me some direction or hints? Do I have to update my Microsoft office (finally?) Seems unfair to me.... Many thanks in Advance.....

Recently used documents list: How to manage?
by Guest Opinicus- 3 replies
Using WinXP Home with all updates etc in place. I've begun making use of the recently used documents list (Start > Documents) but have noticed that the list keeps track of things that I don't consider "documents" like sound and video files. Is there some way to specify the files that are kept track of in this list? Say only Word and Excel files for example? Or can I exclude files with certain extensions from the list? TIA -- Bob http://www.kanyak.com

CHKDSK Hangs - HELP
by Guest Bilbo- 2 replies
XP SP2 wants to check C: (NTFS) for consistency; When allowed, it passes file verification, passes index checks then starts recovering orphaned files. lists: _REGISTRY_USER_NTUSER_S-1-5-19 (40613) into directory file 40568 CHKDSK then hangs; disk i/o light is on pretty solid. If file verification is denied, system appears to boot and run pretty normally. Is there a way to recover this? Thx, -- BilBo

Offline Files
by Guest nevets2001uk- 0 replies

We have setup offlines files via a GPO so that users can make a specific share available offline if they work with a laptop. Once they enable the share offline it synchronises and everything works perfectly. Our annoyance is that if we then login as another user or even the local admin on that PC, offline files tries to synchronise even though the PC is not on the network. Is there a way to ensure offline files only synchronises if the primary user logs in / out of the PC? -- Cheers, Steve Gordon MCSE, MCSA: Messaging

Some Property Tabs In A Different Language
by Guest John Thow- 0 replies

This is really odd. I had to do a repair (In-place upgrade) install on a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP SP2. It was one of those systems that are supplied without an installation disc, so I made one using the Dimension's I386 folder and another Dell XP SP2 install disc for the rest of the stuff. The repair appeared to go fine. However, when I went to check that all the device drivers had re-installed OK, the My Computer; Properties; Hardware tab was not in English: It seems to be in one of the Scandinavian languages. So does the IE(6) Tools menu. There may be other places, but I haven't gone through everything yet. It occurs to me that this may have resu…

PC starting when KB used
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 8 replies

Just discovered that this XP Home PC is powering itself up when I touch the keyboard. Yet under Power Options I don't have anything set that should allow that. I've never used anything like Standby or Hibernate. I just want my PC to be plain OFF until I press the ON button. So I have 'When I press the power button on my computer' set to 'Shut down' FWIW, under the Hibernate tab all is greyed and the facility is not enabled. I did notice that there's another setting', 'When I press the sleep button on my computer:' which was set to 'Standby', but as I don't *have* a Sleep Button I don't see how that can be involved. Anne have any ideas on the cause please…

Unable to End or Uninstall Process
by Guest husky86- 3 replies

I uninstalled an old version of Kaspersky antivirus today. There didn't seem to be any problems associated with the uninstall process. After uninstalling, I restarted my system (Windows XP, Service Pack 3). Yet when I go to the Processes tab, I find that one of the Kaspersky processes is still running: kavsvc.exe. Right-clicking on the process and choosing Delete, I am presented with the window "Access Denied." There is nothing that I can do to stop the process. Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be anything that I can do -- nothing that I know of -- where I can get rid of this process. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might permanentl…

We are currently rolloing out SP3 for Windows XP. We currently have Windows XP SP2 desktops. After installation of SP3 and after a reboot we have found that some PC's would not print. The user had to delete the network printer and reinstall the printer before they could print. SP3 is being pushed out by SMS2003. Has anyone else come across this before and what did you do about it?

log_fs.log ??
by Guest JustUs- 0 replies

I have a 29mb log file "log_fs.log" in my root folder. What is is it? This location is referenced - "[C:\SVN_Source\fslib\ntfsparser.cpp]". I am assuming that location was created as a result of some activity, as it is not there now. Seems to have something to do with MFT records. A "google" did not provide anything useful. Thanks in advance :)

by Guest Nurmi- 0 replies

Following a re-format because a sudden request for password could not be fixed, I now get the password box with Administrator in one box but pale and the notice: This system could not log on. Make sure username and domain are correct then type your passowrd again. Letters in passoword must bei typed using correct case." Since I do not have a password I tried typing the name which I assigned to the PC while installing WinXP and it works. What can I do to bring normalcy back into my life? I certainly don't want to be faced by the above and have to re-format again? -- Nurmi

I would appreciate someone responding to this post. Can anyone explain to me why a NEW account that has 'Administrator' privileges not be able to view videos in IE7 the same as the Administrator account? My problem appeared unexpectedly. I previously had an account that had 'Admin' privileges, and then all of a sudden I was unable to view videos in IE7. I tried all of the various suggestions offered by Adobe (uninstall Flash, run sublnACL, etc.) without success. Totally disgusted, I created a new account with 'Admin' privileges. After moving files and settings as outlined in various KB articles, I had SUCCESS; but only for ONE day. Up…
