by Guest Cleve- 2 replies

Still having problems with windows installer popping up when I start my computer. It was trying to install a program I have since uninstalled, and now it wants to install my wordperfect program which I have. I click on cancel on everything it is trying to do several times, and it finally goes away. My computer is working just fine otherwise. Any suggestions? I would appreciate it.

Automatic updates 6/12/08 erased all saved docs on c:\
by Guest DancingTeddy- 7 replies

Did anyone else experience the loss of saved files on the C:\ drive after the latest updates on 6/12/08? Overngiht, the following loaded: kb950759, kb890830, kb951698, kb950762, kb950760 and kb951376. After the automatic reboot, my screen theme changed, icons are missing, *all* files stored in My Documents are gone (family photos, thousands of music files and artwork, resumes, bookmarks, etc.) and I cannot perform a System Restore to an earlier date. I get error messages about the registry and perhaps not having sufficient administrative privileges. The system assigns a 'temporary profile' then finishes its launch. What puzzles me is that some of my …

How to remove quote from user name.
by Guest Dudely- 2 replies
When I reinstalled XP, I goofed when I created the user Dudely, and I put a single quote in as I hit Enter (fat fingeritis). So my user is now Dudely' See the quote? I've tried a variety of methods of getting rid of it, but I can't. I tried renaming the User, Deleting the user, renaming the directory, adding a new user then deleting the old one, etc. Nothing works. Do I have to reinstall this thing yet again in order to fix the user? Thanks in advance

Keyboard and dropdown lists
by Guest David Mayerovitch- 2 replies

The time you take between keystrokes affects the behavior of a search through a list; I'm interested in how this works. Windows helpfully allows you to reach an entry in a dropdown list by typing the first one or two letters of the entry you want. This also works for various similar lists, such as a contacts list in Outlook. If you type B, you are taken to the first entry beginning with B. If you wait a bit and then type I, you are taken to the first entry beginning with I. However, if you type B and I in quick succession, you are taken to the first entry beginning with BI. I find that on my XP system if you want to match the first two letters, you…

'my computer' loads at startup
by Guest duke- 12 replies

For about a year, and seemingly spontaneously, every time at startup, after arriving at my desktop for less than a second, the 'my computer' page loads, so that I always have to close it to get (back) to my desktop, and begin working. I suspect this is a minor problem, with an easy fix, and I'd appreciate guidance to correct it. This is regarding XP Home Ed. Thanks.

Installation of Win XP SP2
by Guest Alan C. Brown- 4 replies
I have just installed retail version of Windows XP SP1 (version 5.1.2600) on my Toshiba Satellite 5105-S702 laptop. I have to upgrade it to Win XP SP2 using a CD that I purchased in 2005 from Microsoft - actually it's "Version 2002 Service Pack 2" according to the System Properties info on the other laptop that I have it installed on. Can I install the SP2 without first installing the updates/security fixes released between SP1 and SP2 from the Windows Update site ? In other words does SP2 contain all the updates /fixes released since XP SP1 version 5.1.2600 ? Would appreciate any advice. Thank you Alan C.Brown

Re: BIG "Display" PROBLEM

Re: BIG "Display" PROBLEM Joe, I just bought a computer with a gforce 8600gt video card and after several weeks, my computer starting acting identical to what you are saying yours is doing. after troubleshooting everything as you have, i contacted the computer company and they had me exchange the video card...sure enough the new card worked just fine. I might suggest try installing a different card into your present computer or try installing your present card into another computer...this would be a step to determine if you have a faulty card. Sorry: Slow machine. . .
by Guest Ed H- 6 replies

My post escaped before I was done: I know it's been asked a million times but here goes. I used to format/install regularly to keep everything running tip top. With the family, it's become more complicated to do that and so I haven't in 3 years. My machine is about 3/4 full and really slowing down. I'm diligent about routine maintenance; defrag, disk clean up etc. I'm very cautious in regards to malware, spyware and viruses and scan with many different tools. I don't believe that's the problem. I guess I have two questions. Is there anything else I can do to get my machine running fast and smooth again? Is this just the way it goes with aging computers …

Hi, I have XP SP1 installed on a computer. I have a VGA display connected. Everything boots fine. If I decide to boot up without my monitor connected (or forget). Then after bootup I connect a monitor I get no video! I power down, hook up my monitor, power up, and I see Starting Windows XP..... But then my monitor loses it's SYNC and I get no video and it never boots all the way up. Video is gone forever under Windows. I can never boot up now with a monitor. I always lose sync halfway throught bootup. It is like when I booted up without a monitor, XP either reconfigured the graphics or removed the the driver for the monitor. When I plugged the monitor …

Computer shutting down automatically
by Guest Jason- 15 replies
My computer shuts down automatically. I think the problem is due to low disk space. My disk space is in the range of 0-4 GB. If I free disk space by either removing or backing up files will this resolve my issue? At this point I've had my computer for about five years. I realize that most computers have a limited life. I would hope if I freed up the disk space the computer would go back to working properly. I appreciate any advice.

Need for .Net frameworks
by Guest Ramesh- 5 replies
HI, Is it necessary to keep all versions of .Net framework in one system .. 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0? Or can i uninstall the earlier versions when the later upgrades are installed? The later versions do not seem to uninstall the earlier versions or overwrite on them. I would not like to keep the earlier versions, if they are not required, and they occupy (huge) space and weigh down the system. Am not a developer. Only need the frameworks because some software ask for it on installation. Thanks for any inputs. Ramesh

WSUS 3 Downloading Updates patetically slow!
by Guest Dave @ CP Finance- 2 replies
Hi Everyone, I have recently installed a WSUS 3 SP1 server and so far just about everything looks ok. I have approved XP SP3 and Office 2003 SP3 only and they are downloading SOO slow. I'm talking 4 days to do 1.5GB. The server sits behind an ISA 2004 server. I have made an access rule to allow all outbound traffic from the WSUS IP Address, and I can see that it is working fine. On the same server I can go to downloads.microsoft.com and download at about 400-500kb/sec. Any idea's why WSUS would be so slow? Tjanks, Dave.
