Problem with Windows Explorer Context Menu
by Guest joshwert- 1 reply
When I right-click a file in the Windows Explorer the context menu no longer displays the top-most portion of the menu. The items missing are things like: Open, Edit, Preview and Print. The other strange thing is that the Open With command is displayed in bold (denoting it's the default) when I click on any file. All file associations/actions are correctly configured in Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Has anyone else experienced this type of behavior, and if so what steps can be taken to correct the situation to display the missing commands once again? I hope to hear of a solution. Thanks. jw

undeletable folder solution
by Guest perky- 0 replies

I found this answer to the problem of deleting undeletable folders (http://www.jrtwine.com/Products/DelFXPFiles/index.htm). This software is available in four versions, one of which is free. The free version does have the delete functionality enabled, so this should be able to meet your needs. Be aware, the download link is a little difficult to find on the Delete FXP Files website. You will find the download link a bit above the license types table near the bottom of the page. I have tried all the well known software for deleting undeletable folders and this is the first one i have found that worked. i have been trying to delete an empty folder for about …

Printer driver confusion
by Guest carl43m- 2 replies

I have an older desktop with windows XP Home operating system. Recently I took an old laser printer(9 years old) and hooked it directly to the pc. The mfg. web site (Xerox) shows that it did not have a driver for xp or vista for this printer. However, after I hooked up the printer to the pc , it works. I went to control panel/system/hardware/device manager to see what driver might be available to run the printer. However, there was no category for imaging devices which would seem to indicate no driver was loaded for the printer. Does anyone know why this printer is working for me as it doesn't look like there is any driver on the pc to make the printe…

Explorer.exe crashes frequently - errors replicated
by Guest Dreamchaser- 7 replies

Dear MVPs and all, Hey people. I have good news following my previous post. My exlorer.exe still crashes frequently with unknown fault module. I've tried the sfc /scannow and searched for viruses/malware/spyware using updated Symantec Corporate Edition 10.5, Spybot, as well as cleaning up the Trojan.Vundo using tools from Symantec. BUT, I can now replicate the crash. It happens whenever I exit My Computer, Control Panel, or any folders then I'll have an error screen it restarts explorer.exe. Pored over solutions on the net and set "Launch folder windows in a separate process" (problem solved except when closing Temporary Internet Files accessed from IE, …

||||| My experience with SP3 on 2 machines |||||
by Guest J Tinsby- 13 replies

If you read my first posting that SP3 failed to install because I got an " Access Denied" message you'll see that there is a KB 949377 article that addresses this issue. I thought I'd be brave ( or stupid ) and run the registry mod that is suggested in that KB article. This only took a few minutes and I went about installing SP3 on my XP Pro Machine. While that was chugging away I thought I'd put it on my wife's machine that she doesn't use at all that runs XP Home. That install went off without a hitch.................but it made the machine so slow that it was unuseable, so yet another SP3 un-install for me! Now to my machine, it installed OK but I fo…

Software Assurance License Questions
by Guest Daddy- 8 replies
Since my employer has a Software Assurance agreement with Microsoft, I am entitled to purchase Microsoft Office for home use at a very advantageous price. I can only purchase the same version of Office covered by my employer's Software Assurance agreement, which is Office Enterprise. This version of Office contains way more software than I need, but I know that I can install only the components that I wish to use. The advantageous price comes with two 'gotchas' that are actually quite reasonable: I'm only allowed to use this software for so long as my employer maintains its Software Assurance agreement and for so long as I continue to be employed here. …

Will XP Backup copy files Uncompressed to another disk?
by Guest Mel_3- 19 replies
I'm need to move 60 GB of files from one disk to another. The copy command bombs when file names are to long and it takes forever to find them all and correct the problem. I had a 3rd party backup program but it was on the hard disk that died and the vendor won't respond so I can reinstall it on a new disk to recover the data. The files are not compressed... just 60GB's of files. Never used the XP backup program... will it let you do a backup (copy, move, recover, etc) without compressing the files? What alternatives may exist for moving uncompressed files without having to worry about file name length? Thanks for any help.

Why is my floppy drive running?
by Guest watha- 10 replies
I just did a fresh reinstall of XP on a new hard drive, and am enjoying the usual improved performance. But there's one odd quirk-- the floppy drive, which has no disk in it, keeps lighting up and buzzing as if it were searching for data. It does this every few minutes. I suppose it's haremless, but it's annoying. Besides, I'm curious about why it would do this. Anybody ever see this before? And how can I make it stop? Thanks.

Strange behavior in notification area
by Guest Sal- 4 replies

When I right-click a notification area icon to bring up a context menu, many times when I'm finished a portion of the menu is left behind until some other image or window overwrites the area in which it previously appeared. What could be causing this?
