Is there a way with XP Pro and IE 7 to stabilize desktop icons?
by Guest Giv-me-a-brak- 5 replies

My icons change on my desktop -- or disappear, leaving regular folders, etc. In cases where I've created a shortcut to desktop and a domain's icon is created, it'll be gone within a week. I use Windows Defender, Ad-Aware daily, and run One Care weekly. All updates are current.

How to connect to a computer to computer network?
by Guest Frank Dreyfus- 2 replies
Hi, I was away from home and tried to piggyback on someone elses wireless connection. I found two "Unsecured computer-to-computer networks". One was even named "Free Public WiFi". Signal strength to both was good (4 bars and 3 bars). When I tried to connect, Windows took a long time and then said I was Disconnected. However, in the text it said I WAS connected. In actual fact I was NOT. What's the deal with these computer-to-computer networks? How do you connect? One strange thing is that when I got back home those two networks still show up! I've tried refreshing the network list but can't get rid of them. The "normal" networks (not …

Re-installing XP onto a 2nd Hard Drive
by Guest Daz- 3 replies
I have XP installed onto a hard drive which is on a caddy. This installation is rather old and it takes a long time to bootup. I think that it is therefore time to do a re-install (I have tried everything to clean it up but cannot improve the bootup time). The trouble is that a re-installation is such a pain that I would like to be able to keep running my original installation while building a new one. Is it possible and legal to install my copy of XP onto a 2nd hard drive, fitted into a separate caddy, on the same machine as my 1st installation? This way I could keep running my original, slow to boot, installation and then swap caddies to continue the …

Recovery partition
by Guest Howard Brazee- 21 replies

Last year my mother had to replace her computer - she got an eMachines machine with a celeron D processor. Her computer is much slower than her old machine which was cheap several years earlier. Everything is slow, slow, slow. I was at her house yesterday and spent a couple of hours installing XP service pack 3. I did notice that My Computer shows a recovery partition. I've never seen that elsewhere, and wonder if it has something to do with its glacial speeds.

Error 1706. Setup cannot find the requireed files
by Guest Brenda- 3 replies

After installing and trying Microsoft Office 2007, I wanted to go back to Office 2002 XP Small Business so I deleted the trial 2007 programs via Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and now when I try to run any Microsoft program (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) I get the following message after the Windows Installer pops up and tries to run. Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. I recently moved and can't find my original Microsoft disks but I do have a copy of Office 2003 which is my copy at my office. I'm wondering if I just install the 2003 would it fix my problem? Brenda

Clean Install
by Guest Dave Navarro- 18 replies

I bought a new larger hard drive and rather than cloning the old one over to the new one, I'd prefer to do a new clean install (it's been 3 years since I installed XP). I have all my ducks in a row (install CD, key from case, software to re- install, etc..) However, I'd like to get max performance. So... Having surfed the net the two biggest suggestions I ran across repeatedly were to create a small 10gig or so partition to place the swap file on and a 40ish gig partition to install the OS. I should install all of my apps, etc.. onto a partition seperate from the OS to make backups easier. Does this sound correct? Or should I just make two parti…

Question on windows XP Home (OEM)
by Guest howem01- 6 replies
Could some one please tell me if the (OEM) copy of XP Home Edition has a limit on the amount of times it can be Re-Installed & Re-Activated. The reason is: 1. The first time I installed and Activated XP was not a pleasant experience, As I had to change my CPU & Motherboard and Re-Install & Re-Activate XP (Due to hardware Faults). 2. Now I have just discovered over 300 Reg errors, trouble keeping Explorer open, .COM Errors exc. For me the easiest option would be to put up with 8 hours of software re-loading, but I don't know how many times I can do it with XP Home SP2, Nor that horrible O/S Vista Prem I've had to re-install that over 6 times…

In Windows xp sp3, from a command prompt, I type: chkdsk d: /v/r d is an internal hard drive, NTFS, used for backups, and it's brand new. I get the same error message every single time: Cleaning up 2 unused index entries from index $SII of file 9. Cleaning up 2 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 9. Cleaning up 2 unused security descriptors. Fixing mirror copy of the security descriptors data stream. Security descriptor verification completed. How can I fix this? Free firewall recommendations
by Guest cy- 1 reply

Hi, I have been working on my brothers laptop for the past couple of days just giving it a general cleanup. Whilst doing this i noticed that the only firewall he was using was Windows. My ISP supplied me with a firewall so i use this. I was just wondering if using windows firewall is enough or should he be using another instead. If so can anyone recommend a free, easy to use firewall as he is not too computer literate. Any help with this would be highly appreciatted. Thanks in advance. Colin

SP3 problems on 10 systems using Escan A/V from Micro World Technologies
by Guest Bob Aubry- 9 replies

We have received calls on 10 systems starting last Thursday that we believe relate to XP SP3: 1. All systems had Auto Update turned on and we think all had IE 7 2. The symptoms include Start bar minimized, cant see anything in Local Network connection, cant cut/paste, IE opens and closes. 3. We see that many normal services are not properly started on these systems and cant start them, they need other serices... 4. System Restore does not work, says "restart your system and try again" you get the same results The common thread is all have escan A/V installed. We have contacted http://www.mwti.com and they have seen similar problems, recommended uninstall k…

$NtUninstall Packages
by Guest Sandgroper- 8 replies

Hi people , I have a whole heap of the $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ packages/directories in my Windows folders from all of the updates that I have done and some of them are up to 2 years old. I would like to get rid of these packages to free up disk space , so what would be the best way of removing them ? . There has been no problems with any of my updates and my system is running fairly good , so can I just either delete them or move them to another drive ? Thanks. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naked DSL ? No thanks , I like to wear clothes when I use my computer San…

I worte a program on an English XP platform with Visual Studio C++ and MFC. And the program runs perfectly fine in the English XP platform. But when I run the program on a Chinese platform, some of the texts become too long or too high for some labels and some other controls. Why does this happen? How can I sort out this problem? Any comment welcome. Thank you.
