System restore not working
by Guest Big RonG- 6 replies

I have been hit hard by some piece of malware. (Defender, Panda, etc. have all failed to stop the damage.) I believe that the malware has been eliminated by hunting it down and deleting it. However, it left me with a nearly non-functional Start menu and various permissions problems. Yes it was VERY nasty. If I could use a restore point, I think that I could cure my woes - BUT.... System Restore is not functional. The only way that I can run it is from SAFE Administrator mode and then it cycles repeatedly (hopelessly) through the initial question. Search, Task Manager and other system tools return this error - A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you…

by Guest jaroc- 1 reply

I had properly shut down my slow and old toshiba satellite yesterday night and when I powered it up the next morning, a screen said including the words "Windows did not start successfully" showed up. There is a list for me to choose from Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last know good configuration, and Start Windows Normally, all with a countdown timer. Every option I choose, my laptop freezes and doesnt go anywhere, even when I dont do anything and let the timer run down, it still freezes. One time i had let the latop sit there for 20 mins to see if it would do anything because it is a slow cpu with a celeron M processor. I c…

I approved all updates that were not dealing with x64, or Itanium-based systems to a test group last night (6/11/08). This morning, a few laptops lost their audio. One was able to restart and correct itself, but the 'default device' settings were changed in the audio properties of the others. Is anyone aware of this issue? The laptop that was able to restart is a HP6910p with XP, two others have XP, one is an HP Compaq nc6400 and the other I'm not sure of. I have about 420 more computers/servers to approve updates for, and I don't want to approve them and cause myself headaches from user's calls.

XP SP2 Automatic Updates - How much disk space do they use?
by Guest mtuj1974@googlemail.com- 3 replies
- 177 views
I know there is obviously no single answer for this question, but does anybody happen to know vaguely the sort of size the average automatic/ security update would normally take up in XP SP2? e.g. would a single update usually be, say, a few megabytes, or could a single update be in the order of a hundred meg or more? I am beginning to run short of space on my system drive (between 1 - 2 GB left) and not much else I can free up now, so have actually turned Automatic Updates off for the moment simply because I have absolutely no idea the sort of space that is being eaten up each time one is installed.

Speed Disk vs Defrag 1 2
by Guest JCO- 37 replies
These do different things as far as keeping your harddrive tuned up. Defrag removes all the pointers by putting entire programs or data together on the harddrive (in sequence instead of scattered allover the HD). Speed Disk (Norton) is suppose to reorder the data and stack it up front (sort of speak) so that all the empty space is together. If I understand this correctly (or close enough), it seems that you should use both tools. My question is this: Which tool is better to use first? Does it matter? Can one tool undermine the other? Thanks

Reccerts.exe KB number
by Guest CWestwater- 0 replies
Hi, I really need reccerts.exe from Microsoft to recover some files. I called support to raise a case (paid for, or using one of my two free TechNet support incidents - don't care) but they won't help until I give them a KB article that references this tool. I found out about it on various forums including MS ones. http://www.beginningtoseethelight.org/efsrecovery/ Does anyone know which KB article will help? Thanks Colin

Should I install XP or not?
by Guest Eric- 9 replies

My boss requests privately to fix her notebook for herself, I think it will be no problem at all. Her notebook is mainly personal use at home. When I request her to bring all related software and notebook to me, so I can format and install every application for her, she assumes I will use office software to install for her. As a IT manager, should I install office copy software for her notebook for personal usage? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions Eric

Hello all, I have a Freecom Toughdrive 160Gb which I want to use as "travel disk". A part will be public and another part will be private. Since i'll have some files that exceed 4GB, i converted the FAT tot NTFS. All is fine as long as i work on the same computer/same user at home. When I plug it in to another workstation, i can read, but can't alter, delete the data. What should i do to make this fully accessable, on any Windows XP machine? Thanks. jg

XP 64-bit versus 32-bit
by Guest Ken- 3 replies

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using the 64-bit version of XP even though I have no apps that would use it? I am wondering if there is a pure speed advantage if the 64-bit version is used because of the ability to address more than 3+GB of RAM. Also, which cpu's would be best to use with the 64-bit version: quad core? Thanks, Ken K

Where is the control for setting new installations to show up when you press the Start button? I installed a new program a little while back - but it seems to be "stuck"! by that I mean it shows "new program installed" - but these normally stop displaying themselves after a while.. this one isn't ~ just a minor annoyance.. but an annoyance never the less!! thanks. Cancel that! but if this is any use to anyone else ~ it's right click start menu, select properties, select customise, select Advanced... and there it is on the top section! phewww solved! even before posting! :) ha~ good ol'e Google Search! , an answer for most anything!

Smallest Portable That Will Run XP?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 3 replies

Anybody know what the smallest device is that will run "real" Windows XP? I'm probably going to supplement my Palm Pilot with a Windows Mobile device sometime this year.... more for amusement than any practical value. But it occurred to me that maybe by now there are devices available that run full-blown Windows yet are aren't more than, say, three times larger than a PDA. -- PeteCresswell

Replacing hard drive
by Guest Gerald Ross- 3 replies

I wanted to replace the 40 GB HD in my XP SP3 notebook. Booting from the Acronis CD I backed up both partitions (separately) to a USB hard drive. Then with power off I replaced the hard drive with a 120 GB one. Then booting on a Partition Commander CD I partitioned the new drive and formatted both to NTFS (not sure if this was necessary). Then Booted on Acronis CD and restored both partitions. When I restarted, windows came up and everything works just like it did before--no glitches or problems of any kind. Total restore time after starting removal of the old drive was 2 hr 15 min. Acronis True Image rules! -- Gerald Ross Cochran, GA The problem…

Windows XP "access is denied" error for folder shortcuts - $10 to theperson who solves it Hi, I'm a pretty technical user, and have been living with this issue for 3 years now. It's not worth reinstalling Windows over, but it's annoying all the same. I'm willing to Paypal $10 to the person who can solve this for me. I don't have any way to prove that I'll pay you, but what have you got to lose? The problem: I receive a standard Windows error message box "Access denied" when I double click a shortcut to a folder, or when I go to Start | Run and type in a folder other than the drive root. These problems happen for ANY folder on ANY drive. For example…

Screen saver does not come on after time out
by Guest davo77- 0 replies

Im running XP Home, and had a problem with the screen saver not coming on after the time out period...note SP2. I found a response on XP general concerning DVD drivers loading up at startup causing a problem (cyberlink Power DVD). Indeed removing the driver from startup via MSconfig fixed the issue... hurray. I loaded the SP3 update, no probem the screen saver still was working. Today... auto update loaded some fixes regarding MS Ooffice sp3, now the screen saver is back to non operation status (except in preview mode). I checked the DVD driver it is still unloaded. Anyone have any clues on how this latest update put the monkey whench back in …

How to automatically set the command prompt to last focused explorerwindow?
by Guest David Lorenz- 2 replies

Hello Newsgroup, I recently worked on a WinXP SP2 PC which had a nice feature enabled. Let's assume I open the Windows Explorer and navigate by mouse to the folder: C:\temp\test Now I press [WIN]+R type "cmd" [ENTER] The commandline opens AND the prompt looks like that: C:\temp\test> (If theres no Windows Explorer open the prompt points to: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop) No matter what folder I open in Explorer, the command prompt alwalys points to the folder which was last focused in Explorer. Note: - I already know the solution to add a entry to the context menu in explorer but that's not what I want. - There is …
