Some applications no longer launch
by Guest Ian S- 2 replies

In my Windows XP Home SP2 installation, some of my applications no longer launch. Clicking the desktop icon fails to launch the program. No error message, nothing. Nor can I start them by using the Start menu. Some of the applications are third party (Adobe Reader, Photoshop CS2), but some are windows applications (Notepad, Wordpad, Media Player). The remaining apps operate as normal. If I use Window Explorer to locate the appropriate exe file in the Program Files sub directory, then double click the file, it still fails to launch. However, if I use Start > Run, then navigate to the appropriate exe file, they do launch properly. What is the difference?…

I have a network of three computers, two running windowsxp and one running windows98. Networking between all three is okay except for one of the XPs. This XP,\\ACER_PENT, can see every other computer's shares and read them. However when I attempt to access the shares of the \\ACER_PENT from either of the other two computers I get a message that \\ACER-PENT <filename> is not accessible. The shares show up on My Network Places, but when I attempt to access I get the not accessible message. What could the problem be on \\ACER_PENT? TIA

OLE automation
by Guest gtoph- 0 replies
Every time I boot I get a pop-up window asking "Do you want to install Microsoft OLE automation?" There are two option: yes and no. If I select yes it starts to install. Then I'm told there are newer files existing, do I want to overwrite existing files? A yes answer and it continues, a no answer it stops. If I select no the pop-up window goes away and booting completes. No matter what I do the next time I boot I get the same damn pop-up window with the same question. How do I get rid of this annoying window? I have XP MCE, Service Pack 3. I'm not positive but I think this started when I installed SP3.

I transcribe using headphones with Express Scribe or RC Player, but I really miss working while classical music plays in the background. Is there anyway to configure my Windows XP so ITunes will play through the speakers and my transcription programs play through the headphones and they do not overlap? I have Creative Soundblaster Live 24-bit speakers. I plug my headphones in my front jack of my Dell Dimension 8400.

I have WinXP Pro SP3 and I can't get the display screen on a laptop to shut down after the prescribed time. In Control Panel I go to Display and Screen Saver and the click Power. I set Turn off monitor after 15 minutes. When I go up to Power Schemes and click SaveAs I get error message "Indicates two revision levels are incompatible." All updates are up to date. What could be happening? The screen never shuts down. Thank you
