Windows Firewall Settings will not dosplay
by Guest Not Me- 4 replies

When I try to access the Windows Firewall, I get an error...due to an unspecified error, windows firewall settings can not be displayed. I have not installed any third party firewall and Defender, Spybot and AVG8 tell me the machine is clean of spyware. XP Home SP2 Any idea how I can re-enable the firewall? Norton Secutiry (2005) came on the machine OEM, but was uninstalled long ago. I ran the Norton cleanup tool today to be sure it was no longer a problem.

Find the authors of files
by Guest kcrad- 1 reply

Does anyone know of a tool that will extract the author information from a list of files? I have thousands of old files on a shared server from many authors that have accumulated over the years and I need to sort them out. One thing that would really help me is if I could sort them according to who wrote them, or what machine they were created on. Is there a way to do that without opening the properties of each file individally? Thanks!

SP3 - Status Question 1 2
by Guest Fred S *****- 26 replies

I have advised a number of people to hold off on installing SP3 for obvious reasons. One has actually encountered problems as he had automatic updates on and SP3 was installed. I had him use Add/Remove Progs to remove SP3 and he seems to be OK. My question is this, what is going on with SP3 remedies? Is MS working on a new version of SP3, or is there a "fix" for it that can be installed ASAP? I guess that there needs to be a "Status" report of some kind to keep users up to date on what is going on. Any comments? Thanks, Fred

I've got a computer with a crash problem that happens occasionally (approx. once a week). The minidump analysis is below. It seems to indicate a problem with the parallel port. Since this is not being used I disabled it in Windows. I want to know if there's any further action required. I'm waiting to see if the crash reoccurs. Thanks for any help. Hi. This is a long post, and I appreciate your patience. I am having a problem with the installation of printer software. I describe the problem below. --- I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4 processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space. The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME). I've had this computer for years, and I never bought a printer for it until now. I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner. --- The installation guide instructed me to do the following: 1) Install the paper. 2) Connect the printer to the phone …

'Phantom' Office install process for new user
by Guest Steve H- 4 replies
On setting up a third user on our XPHome laptop, an unnecessary 'please wait while Windows installs...' message cycle begins whenever an Office programme is clicked. The process looks for the msi file on a network that does not exist, but is not necessary in any case because if one simply cancels the installer as soon as the pop up appears, the programmes load just fine. There are quite a lot of references to similar messages found in searching, but they seem to refer to fixes that don't apply in our case. Many refer to downloading an 'Orctools.exe' file, which does not seem to be at the links given; changing a registry value, that does not exist in our…

Hi All, Recently had an XP crash due to a bad Norton Ghost download. Anyone with ideas? Thanks, Pete

Gurus, Have a question concerning sysprep.inf. In this file I have a [GuiRunOnce] section with a single line under it: C:\i386\$oem$\Reg_change.vbs. The file Reg_change.vbs is not being executed. It changes one line in the registry but that winds up not happening at all. Inside the Sysprep folder I have an i386 folder and under that I have a $oem$ folder containing Reg_change.vbs. What am I doing wrong? All other features of Sysprep are working properly. -- Spin

windows pro
by Guest phal- 16 replies

In the past, if I had a windows problem that I could not figure out, I would put in the windows disk and go over the top of the OS with a new install (without formatting) and it always seemed to fix my problem. I tried this today to fix a registry problem and I am getting the following warning I have not seen before: Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. This is a purchased copy of Win XP Pro with a key. Is this because I have in…

Problem deleting files
by Guest PeteOlcott- 0 replies
I needed to delete about 2.7 GB of 500,000 files yesterday and it seemed that it was taking far too long. I was deleting these files using the command prompt. I opened another command prompt to measure the progress by seeing how much free space became available every minute. It was only about 2 MB, thus the system was only deleting about 370 files per minute. At this rate it would take more than 22 hours to complete. I ended up reformatting the drive because this would take only 25 minutes. Does anyone have any idea whether or not deleting 500,000 files of an average of 5 KB each should take more than 22 hours on a fast quad- core sata drive machine? What cou…

Hello all. I have about 6-8 workstations that will not shut down or log off. This was an isolated event and I had 1 workstation that was doing it for a while now it seems to be spreading. Network is virus and adware free and so are the workstations. Was there some sort of update that would have caused this problem?? I don't or cannot understand why it would start with 1 system then over the past 3-4 days I now have 8 that will not shut down or log off using the windows shut down screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Mark

Hi, Uses: Windows XP +SP2, Domain Memeber; We have a computer which is kept as a Public Viewer. Recently we added this to Active Directory. However now we are facing a trouble where the windows XP automatically logs off and locks it self after several minutes. This and several computers are in a Certain Organizational Unit (OU) and we would like to have any Group Policy written to avoid this problem for that only if there were no solutions to apply to the local computer itself. If there is solution we could pass it on for the Group IT Department, which the main Active Directory is installed. Any solution we would be appreciated. Regards, -- …

How to select installing language of software?

Probably less strange question if detailed out. I want to install software on my system in English. Yet there are drivers and certain software (i.e. latest Google Earth version) that insists to install in German. please help... I tried a lot with User Locale and System locale (I think), but I am not able to control reliably how software is installed. I am running a native US version of Windows XP SP2. However, I do have a Swiss keyboard and I live ins Switzerland. Windows XP language is english. Standards and formats are English (USA) too, but i have customized some formats (date, time, etc). Location is Switzerland. Input languages include Englis…
