Notice during start up
by Guest Suzi- 1 reply

I just started getting this notice during start up: "WKUFind.exe application failed to start because MSVCR70.dll was not found. Reinstalling this application may fix this problem." If I click O.K. the computer continues the start up. How do I reinstall this application and what is it? I also just noticed that Intel® Pro/100 VE Network Connection located under Network Driver has three recent event log messages: "Does not support the configuration supplied." When I go to Diagnostics & run a test, the result is that everything passed. Are these two problems related? How do I fix them? Thank you.

I don't know what triggers it, but the above happens and sometimes if I wait it stops, and sometimes I have to reboot while it's spinning. The only thing I did yesterday was uninstall TIS 2008, and re-install because my firewall failed to start. Any ideas? Thanks.

Slipstreamed SP3: IE and Remote Desktop Connection missing
by Guest abbie- 0 replies

I've just installed a slipstreamed copy of XP SP3, and I've noticed a number of Windows components aren't there, as they were in XP SP2. In particular: * Internet Explorer * Remote Desktop Connection IE is easy enough to install on its own, but putting back Remote Desktop Connection seems trickier. I know I can get an RDC client easily enough, but because the Remote tab is no longer present in the properties for "My Computer," I'm wondering if the ability to connect to the new installation via RDC is gone too. I Googled the issue and found a recommendation to execute this command from a prompt: regsvr32 remotepg.dll The registration appear…

How to transfer Outlook Express settings, emails and Address Book from one computer to another? Dear friends: How to transfer Outlook Express settings, emails and Address Book from one computer to another? My daughter renewed her computer and she wants to transfer Outlook Express' Address Book, settings, emails, etc. from her old computer to the new one. Is there, for Outlook Express, the equivalent to the "PST" files of Outlook where all this stuff is stored? And where it is located? Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago de Chile (South America) Note: Please forgive me for my bad English, I am trying to improve it!

windows won't load - flash of a blue error screen
by Guest Rockitman- 2 replies

Have a Dell with WinXP SP2. Upon bootup, I get the screen that asks to boot Windows normally, Safe boot, or Last Known Configuration. No matter which one I choose, Windows will start to load and after a few seconds a blue screen with some error message flashes just for the briefest instant and then the machine reboots. The blue screen does not stay on long enough to read. What are my first steps to correct this problem?

Hello, My computer is a Dell Dimension 4700C with Windows XP sp2. The little jingle that plays when Windows starts up, is distorted. Furthermore, all audio and video has crackles and plays haltingly. Even streaming media like internet radio, ie Launchcast, plays gravelly. The speakers are properly connected and I've tried uninstalling the SoundMax Digital Audio. When I restart the computer, the startup jingle is still distorted as well as all other audio I attempt to play. All suggestions welcome. Thank You

Why is Verizon now a part of top tool bar and....
by Guest RobertETH- 6 replies

I powered up my Toshiba laptop this afternoon and the Verizon logo is now part of my top bar and in the Windows Search bar. Kinda odd since I'm on AT&T DSL. Top Bar: Verizon Online DSL with MSN Search Bar: Verizon with MSN I take a dim view of computer hijacking which this seems to be. 1. How did it happen? 2. How do I get it off without wiping the drive and reinstalling with the Toshiba restore disk? 3. Would there be anything else that may have been changed I haven't seen yet? Thank you in advance for any info! RobertETH

CPU Usage Graph in Task Manager
by Guest gco- 4 replies
There seems to be a bug (or at least an inconsistency) in Windows Task Manager: the CPU Usage History graph always starts with a spurious zero point whereas the Page File Usage History graph correctly starts with a valid data point. Clearly it's not a major problem but it would be good to get it fixed in some future release. However, I can't find a way of submitting a fault/comment report to Microsoft (the closest I can find is to contact a support professional, and I don't feel inclined to pay for the privilege of providing an improvement suggestion). Can anyone help?

I downloaded the service pack 3 a few weeks ago, and since I got a few errors when booting up Windows. Sometimes it boots, sometimes and m,ost time it does not. Not sure if it is becuase service pack 3...This was the only change I made other than uninstalling old norton and installing AVG 8.0, but worked fine since the last few weeks. Sometimes when I am able to get on my computer, it reboots, then states there is an issue and boot usuing last known configuration or run normally or in safe mode etc. I try all of them and it just keeps starting up to this screen everytime. Once in a while I see an error stating Windows/system32/drivers/ntfs.sys is corr…

Win XP home booting configutations?
by Guest KG- 0 replies

How many different boot configurations does XP keep and how are they identified? I have an older ABIT NFS7 v2 home built system that runs great most of the time. But about half the time it's good other times Nort 2007 now 2008, AVG, and Avast errors out on virus scans repeatedly on the same load also Spybot or Ad-Aware full scan hangs, forcing a reboot. I have found that if I do not scan the windows folder the virus scans and Ad-Aware full scan work. Please don't say reload the system as I have many TSR's and tweaks on this system that I never could duplicate it again. The system was running great until 2 months ago when a memory stick started throwing errors. …

Windows validation tool
by Guest John D- 2 replies

Hi I was asked by a friend of mine to have a look at his computer as he is having a variety of problems, but the trouble is he is not sure if his copy of Windows is genuine or a pirate copy. He has XP professional on the machine, but he bought it from a colleague at work, who he can no longer contact to ask if the copy of XP is a legal copy. When I try to run updates for the computer, the Windows validation tool comes up. I know this will check for pirate copies. What does the validation tool do when it detects a pirate copy. If it will stop him using his pc any longer, I don't want to run it, but there is also the possibility that his copy of Windows …

Authentication change between SP2 and SP3 denies access to local s
by Guest lellisj- 2 replies

My laptop is a member of our company's domain. Under SP2 I could access a share on my laptop from a non domain computer by specifying access via a user account local to the laptop. upgrading to SP3 has changed this capability. The access still works when the laptop is attached to the domain via either the lan or via VPN, but when the laptop is detached from the domain, access to the share is denied with the following message: There are currently no logon servers availablel to service the logon request. It appears that under SP3 the OS attempts to validate the credentials of the local account via the domain BEFORE trying to validate it locally, but if…
