Microsft Identification
by Guest barrowhill- 19 replies
My son purchased a PC system from an on-line e-Bay reseller which was stated to have genuine XP Pro and Office 2007 SE installed. To cut a long story short, the Microsft OGA Manager has confirmed, via supplied MGADiag Report, that the installed software was indeed non genuine. Communication with the supplier has stopped. He refuses to answer emails, so request for refund is being ignored. The advertised telephone number won't except incoming calls and the e-Bay supplied number for their customer support line is an answerphone line that has been overscribed and won't except any more messages. He is however quick to respond to feedback left on the sit…

Remote Desktop Wake on Lan
by Guest Twanny- 8 replies
I have two PCs running Windows XP Pro SP3, networked over a LAN using Cable and NIC Cards. The Remote Desktop in XP works very well for my needs, except when I put the secondary PC to "sleep", in which case RDP is unable to connect again. Can anyone show me how to "wake up" the other computer over my LAN? I am a home user with average knowledge about computers but willing to follow any tips or instructions. Tried to find a solution on the Microsoft Knowledge base and also did a google search, but all I could find are third party utilities and am not prepared to purchase software that is used occassionaly.

by Guest ralphs- 9 replies

Using XP Pro, SP3 and working from the command line I did a recursive text search in files (grep) and received the following message: Cannot change to CardSpace Using dir /s /ah I found it here C:\Documents and Settings\Ralph\Local Settings\ Application Data\Microsoft\CardSpace However after changing to that Microsoft directory a cd CardSpace results in this message Access is denied. Looking at it with another tool I found two hidden directories, CardSpace with attributes of directory and hidden and Feeds Cache with directory, hidden and system. However I CAN change the directory to Feeds Cache. I have never before found a directory…

Intel Q9300 new with windows xp installed
by Guest Hopeful- 2 replies

I have just purchased a new pc and added windows xp to it, upon updating sp3 was offered which I downloaded and installed. Since installing the pc occasionally just shuts down and reboots for no apparent reason, I'm seriously considering taking sp3 off. I get no error message and no recovery message once it restarts, its really strange it just crashed to a black screen and restarts, once restarted it can be fine or crash out again almost immediately , there is no pattern or link to any particular piece of software but there's barely anything installed.

RE: Transfering XP License to a new computer
by Guest Tigerray00- 0 replies

RE: Transfering XP License to a new computer It's actually a lot more simple than people realize. Simply roll back your IDE drivers back to window's default generic driver(do this in safe mode) and when the computer shuts down to reboot, just turn it off, transfer the HDD to the new computer as the master and turn it on. You'll have to update/install the drivers for the new computer but XP shouldn't give you any trouble. I've successfully changed motherboards several times with the same hard drive this way. How to use filenames with "!" in an expanded variable?
by Guest ShadowTek- 2 replies
If I use the following in a batch file, then a file named "hi!" will be echoed as "hi". setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion for %%G in (Input_Files\*) do ( echo %%G ) This breaks proper file referencing when trying to work with anything that has an exclamation point in it. Is it just not possible to use any files with "!" when delayed expansion is enabled? Or is there still some way to work with it?

printer -- paperport
by Guest Norman- 3 replies
I have been unable to get the paperport printer to install correctly. XP Pro SP2, as an upgrade. One group of attempts with paperport and the printer in place and another with them removed prior to upgrade. The version of paperport, 7.02.006 Deluxe and 7.02.02 Deluxe install OK except for the paperport printer. Upgrading with paperport in place removed the printer. But, if I chose one of my other printers, except the FAX, and look under properties at advanced and the print processor button, I find the "paperport print processor" listed, including Blicent on the right side of the pane. These scanners are labeled for XP. But in my searches many others have fou…

Several updates to Windows XP Media Center 2004 recently downloaded to my computer, and since then the photo that served as my desktop background will not appear. The desktop background is now royal blue - when I log off my desktop, the photo appears briefly then disappears. I tried to reinstall the photo as desktop background, but it didn't work. The computer will only let me change the background color. Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

Upgrading to Windows XP Home from Win95
by Guest Boris- 16 replies
Now that XP will be phased out, I'd like to purchase an upgrade version to have around. I think I'll use it to install on a newly purchased Dell Vista laptop, because I don't care for Vista. I have anOEM version of XP that came on a Dell machine that I no longer use, but I know that I can't use it on a new laptop per the license. I do have a retail version of Windows 95 that is no longer in use. I've read different articles that say Win95 is not an upgrade path to XP, and some articles have said that it is. My question is, can I, using an XP Home SP2 Upgrade disc, do a clean, full install, and insert my Win95 disk when I'm asked for verification? Thank …

Transferring Accounts
by Guest schnub- 2 replies
I'm trying to move all the files I have in my computer's administration account into a user account, but I'm not sure how to do this. I've tried moving all the files into the shared document folder, but when I try to access it in the user account, I keep getting an error message with the files that are in their own folders, saying that permission is denied. Then I've tried placing the files directly into the user account's documents, but still I get the same error message. So my question is how do you transfer files over accounts?

Unsorted directory listing
by Guest R. P.- 3 replies

My simple MP3 player plays the songs on my USB thumb drive in the order the files were written there, i.e., in the physical order their FAT entries are in each directory. Unfortunately, Win Exporer, and even the DIR command, does not seem to have an option to list the files in such an unsorted order. Is there a way around this? I seem to vaguely recall that in the old DOS days the DIR command did have a switch to produce such a listing but I may remember wrong. R. P.

Unable to print on network
by Guest RHG- 3 replies
I recently connected my WinXP SP2 (ethernet) to a Macbook Pro via AirPort (Space Station). The network is connected to the internet by cable - with a Vonage VoIP modem in between. Everything worked fine until the VoIP modem failed and was replaced. Now I cannot get the PC to print or see the HD in the Apple router. It does spool the print files. The Mac system works OK. I have followed all the MS and Mac instructions on the net and their respective newsgroup with no success. Can someone please help me fix this mess.
