System Sounds Don't Play
by Guest SoxFanInVA- 7 replies
Today I noticed my system sounds no longer play. However I can go into the Windows\Media folder and play any of the system sounds directly in Media Player. I can also play mp3's with no problem and my tv tuner card has sound playback. I've tried manually setting up a couple sounds with their events and that does not work. I have tried the default scheme, Ultimate Extra Glass scheme, Ultimate Extras Pearl scheme and none of them work. No conflicts in device manager. Computer is a Dell XPS 410, sound card is "High Def Audio Device". Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Tom

Quick Launch icon shows properties but doesn't launch app
by Guest Troy Dot Net- 1 reply

My system unexpectedly rebooted (apparently a device driver problem) and now clicking a Quick Launch icon causes Windows to display the icon's properties instead of launching the related application. This happens for all 12 Quick Launch icons I have. I know rebooting again will likely (I hope) fix the problem but does anybody know why this is happening? Thanks for your time. Troy

RE: Can't Stop the Error Messages!!! I, too, keep getting an error message pop up that I cannot get rid of. It is "PrintServer connect fail". I run XP, and got this message when I had not started my remote printer. Afterwards, I started the printer, printed many messages, but continur to get this pop-up. Any thoughts? Briefcase issue after changing fileserver
by Guest BBaetens- 0 replies
All our user home folders have been moved from one fileserver "server-x" to a new fileserver "server-y" which creates a Briefcase issue. The drive letter mapping is kept the same. The synchornized folder still has a reference to server-x in the Briefcase. How can I update this easily to point to server-y I want to avoid setting up new briefcases for +/- 500 end-users. Thanks in advance for this technical challenge.

I sent a query through the newsgroups and got a reply via email. When I clicked on the link to get the response to my query all I got was a blank page. I have tried unsucessfully to find the answer in the newsgroups without success. Two problems, why did the page come up blank? and if the person who replied to my question is out there just to let you know I took your advice and it resolved the problem. Cheers

kill "changed MSCONFIG post reboot warning"
by Guest phal- 7 replies
I want to either kill "changed MSCONFIG post reboot warning" or forever stop all automatic changes to my startup menu in XP. I am using Spybot S&D's Tea Timer which does a good job of preventing the registry changes, but everytime I reboot, it get the post boot confirmation pop up. I check the box to "do not show this warning again" but still get the warning every time I reboot. Can I completely block all non user startup changes somehow and do away with teatimer or is there a way to modify the registry to kill the post boot confirmation? I tried another fix in a previous post on this subject, but it made no difference to the startup message or t…

Can I Transfer License to New PC ?
by Guest Talal Itani- 18 replies
Hello, I have an old PC with XP Pro. I am building a new PC and would like to know if I can use the XP Pro I already have. I have the license number, yet I do not have the disk. My friend told me that he can give me an XP Pro disk, and all I have to do is install and plug-in the license number. Is this true, is this a good idea? Will Microsoft disable XP on the old PC? (The license number does not say OEM.) Thanks. T.I.

Remote Desktop/RDP (MSTSC.exe) won't start
by Guest Sean- 4 replies

I have windows XP Home, when I try to run MSTSC.exe, nothing happens - computer pauses for a moment and then nothing loads. If I look in task manager MSTSC.exe is running under processes (in fact usually multiple copies of MSTSC.exe as I have usually clicked on Remote Desktop several times in frustration). Now the strange part if I delete MSTSC.exe and mstscax.dll from the system 32 folder -- Remote desktop reverts back to an earlier version which loads fine. However as soon as I do windows update or try to reinstall RDP 6 from file (WindowsXP-KB925876-x86-ENU.exe) I get the same problem. I have tried reinstalling windows (repair - not full reinstall…
