Unknown User in User Profiles?
by Guest Moxieman- 5 replies
Running XP Home, SP3. >Control Panel > System >Advanced >User Profiles shows 3 users. Two I created, and another, Account Unknown which I did not create. 1. Does this mean my computer has been compromised? 2. Can I delete it? Firewall is always on, antivirus shows no problems. Updates are in place. It does not show up in Control Panel >User Accounts. There, it shows the two active accounts and says "Guest Account is off." Thanks in advance, Moxieman

Re: Procedure to convert MS Word to JPG

Re: Procedure to convert MS Word to JPG Amazing! You guys solved a similar problem for me. I too, believe it or not, needed to convert a Word (2002) document to a graphics file. I tried to copy and paste the .doc contents into Irfanview and/or MS Paint and then save the result as a bitmap or jpg file or whatever. It worked, except there's a table in the Word document and the process I just described failed to copy some of the table's horizontal and vertical lines, which can be reconstructed using paint or Irfanview but it's a pain and why do I have a computer anyway but to save me pain? Using a screen shot pasted into Irfanview or MS Paint works …

Buying a copy of Windows - I'm confused
by Guest MikeB- 17 replies

I want to buy a layaway copy of Windows XP Pro. I don't need to install it right away, but I want to have one, just in case I get a new computer and XP isn't available at that time anymore. Obviously I want a legal copy. As far as I can see when searching, I can find the following types: Full version (about $114-128) OEM version ($90-110) Media only ($29) License + media ($135) So what's legal with what? Since I sometimes build/upgrade my own computers, I believe I can legally install the OEM version on such a modified computer, right? But what is the media-only option? What does that not have that makes it so cheap? And what makes the License+…

I've just installed SP3 (dated 5/6/08) and when I try to resume from hibernation or standby then my laptop hangs. The only way to proceed is to turn off power and do a fresh reboot. If I remove the PCMCIA card before going into hibernation or stand by, then I can resume the session. But then I've to plun in again the WLAN card. This used to work with SP2 and all updates installed so far. The hardware details are Toshiba Satellite P10-554 Laptop and Siemens Gigaset PC Card 54. I'd like to continue with SP3, without having to disbale the WLAN card. I've even set up a new system from recovery media followed by SP3. Any help is appreciated.

IE 7?
by Guest Jeff@unknown.com- 15 replies

Although I have kept up with all the critical updates on my XP systems, including SP3, I have avoided IE7. When it first came out and installed itself, I hated it and uninstalled it. Since I use Firefox 99% of the time and only use IE for the Windows updates, it was not great problem. I've been hearing that users now seem to not mind the recent versions of IE7 and I am therefore considering downloading it on the off chance that it is safer to use than IE6 when I have to use it instead of Firefox. Are the gurus here using IE7 instead of IE6? At one time it was pretty much thumbs down for IE7. Jeff

Possible (is it ?) to revert to single user XPPro with no login screen from multiple login My sister wants to revert to single user machines (XPPro) with no login screen at all, which is quite possible to have if the computer is setup that way from the start, ie no passwords entered at installation, Administrator pw and user left blank. But I have never been able to revert to a perfectly clean startup direct from switch-on once the machine has been used with any user login and password, not that Ive tried very hard! Is it possible to do direct startup without XP reinstallation from zero?? Just cleaning out and wiping the multiple users and removing the pas…

by Guest niladri- 0 replies

O/S: Windows XP Professional Version: Service Pack 3 Issue: DVD burner can run a CD but cannot burn DVD or Play a DVD !! Since I upgraded to SP3, I have noticed the IMAPI CD-Burning Service not starting when I start Windows. Even if I set Properties/Recovery/First Failure/( or Secondary Failure) : set as 'Restart The Service', when I restart the Windows, the IMAPI still 'STOP' state. Even IMAPI is set to 'Automatic'. If I start IMAPI (by clicking start button) and restart windows, the Service (IMAPI) shows as 'STOP'. Again I always set Startup Type: Automatic, for IMAPI. The Problem: DVD does NOT play. Right click to see the files, does not show a…

I am running Windows XP SP2 My laptop integrated WiFi has stopped working again. I get WiFi if I insert a WiFicard but without the card I cannot see any network in the network window. The WiFi switch is on. I tried debugging using http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html but the window when I click Properties for Client for Microsoft Networks just shows RPC services and no General and Alternate configuration as in the example. In Device Manager, all 3 Network adapters are enabled. 1394 net adaptor was disabled but I enabled it. On each of my drives, I now have a folder titled "System Volume Information" - it was never there before and I am not sure what created it. It is a restricted folder and I cannot access it. I am the Admin. on my computer. Anyone know what this folder is and how it was created? Maybe it was there all along, but hidden, but now it's not. (It's listed as "drive:\system volume information") among all other folders on the drives. Thanks for any tips. Charliec ****************************************************** Charliec
