Acronis TrueImage vs Norton Ghost
by Guest Lou- 14 replies
This note it intended to assist those who wish to use either of the subject programs in the same fashion I do. I have extensive experience with Acronis version 10, initial release and build 9042 and version 11 build 8035. Also experienced with Norton Ghost version 10 and version 12. Both products are good. I choose not to use the Acronis products because executing scheduled backup tasks with validation for 4 systems would take about 9 hours and 20 minutes using Acronis TrueImage whereas the same tasks using Norton Ghost would take about 2 hours and 40 minutes. I back up four systems to an external drive on a regular basis. Each backup is a full i…

automatic updates not working?
by Guest yawnmoth- 3 replies

I have two computers - a laptop and a desktop. After taking the laptop out of hibernate, it automatically downloaded the updates and prompted me, periodically, asking me if I wanted to abort a reboot that'd otherwise begin in 5 minutes. The desktop, however, has neither prompted me for a reboot nor has does it appear to have even installed the updates. I have Automatic Updates set to Automatic on this computer, and have it set up to download them every day at 3AM. Yet it doesn't appear to be auto- downloading anything. Any ideas as to why?

XP Pro Dual Boot - 2 HDD
by Guest Wayne- 1 reply

I have installed two separate copy of XP Pro on separate SATA/IDE drives. I used to be able to dual boot into either and each copy was distictively different. I installed Ubuntu Linux on the 2nd (IDE) hdd and now whenever I try to boot into the copy of XP on the IDE drive, it boots into the copy on the SATA hdd instead. In short, if I boot into the sata copy (first hdd C:) then everything is just fine. If I boot into the IDE copy (2nd hdd F:) then it's the sata copy that's run, but the default hdd showing in windows explorer is 2nd hdd F:. [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0…

Hello, I have a problem with installing ANY KIND of softwares. Ever since my motherboard got busted by my son's BB Gun (it went through the plastic see through shield.) and I took it to the PC place where I know some people, I depended on them to replace with the new motherboard. I did not care which one they put in. As I got it back, the computer was good as new. They reinstalled my Windows XP also. problem is: I put some discs in to install things like some games, and it was really slower than usual, meaning slower than my old computer. My mouse point moves really choppy and slow as the installation begins. It happened everytime, with every other sof…

Quirk after SP3 installation
by Guest Josh Beavers- 9 replies

I just installed SP3 for XP this morning. After installing the SP I have been trying all day to get OE to stop with the pop-up messages. I had read a post from someone else that mentioned to reset the Compact Check Count if your system crashed during compaction. Oddly enough this silenced the issue for about 10 to 20 minutes, but as you stated something is opening OE. I haven't used OE in over a year so it is definitely annoying to have this continue. I do not have Windows Desktop Search or Google Desktop search installed so I am confused as to what item is trying to continually open OE. I was watching process monitor and could not find anything othe…

Repeated hassles moving large file...?
by Guest Kenneth- 21 replies
Howdy, I run XP Pro on one machine, and Win 2000 on another. On the XP system, I have a few large (8-9 gig) files that I want to move to the 2000 box over our lan. When I try to cut and paste, I see the progress bar, and the estimate of 20 minutes or so to completion. Then, after three or four minutes, the estimate drops to 16-17 minutes, as we would expect. But... Shortly thereafter, the estimate starts to climb, eventually to about 90 minutes, and there it remains. If I simply wait, the XP machine eventually hangs with a blank screen (right clicking to attempt to refresh does nothing) and I then reboot. All this has happened, as I have descri…

question about the hosts file
by Guest Tim.T- 2 replies

I'm confused as to what exactly should appear in this host file. All I do know is that the line "localhost 127.0.0.1" is legitimate. However, I'm using Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5, and it has added hundreds of what are clearly phoney domains to this list (there are so many the hosts file is 251kb in size!). Here's just a very small sample: 127.0.0.1 localhost # Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy 127.0.0.1 http://www.007guard.com 127.0.0.1 007guard.com 127.0.0.1 008i.com 127.0.0.1 http://www.008k.com 127.0.0.1 008k.com 127.0.0.1 http://www.00hq.com 127.0.0.1 00hq.com 127.0.0.1 010402.com 127.0.0.1 http://www.032439.com 12…

WinXP boot to blinking cursor
by Guest eljainc- 2 replies

Hello, I have a conundrum. I installed WinXP home on a 160GB drive on a Dell Optiplex PC. After setting up all of the programs and setitngs, I moved it to a Compaq Presario PC. It is the only drive on the primary controller. When the system gets past the POST it gets stuck at a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. I made sure that there are no other CDROMs or other boot devices. I then tried to go into recovery console, ran chkdsk /r and also fixboot and fixmbr, but nothing. The jumper on the drive I've tried as slave, cable select and master. Still I get the blinking cursor issue. Is there anything else that can be done to fix this....or do I r…

Help - My DVD Burner suddenly thinks it a CD only
by Guest Perry B- 7 replies
Although I have burned many DVDs in the past, several days ago I developed a problem. When I look at my drive with Windows Explorer, it shows up as a DVD-RW drive. But when I put in a disk, it becomes a CD drive, and gives a message that there is no disk in the drive. If I put in a CD, it reads and opens correctly. The hardware configuration option under System shows the drive correctly, and says it is working OK. I did a system restore without any change. Any Ideas? Thanks in Advance Perry B

service pack 3
by Guest peter marshall- 4 replies

Because WP Service Pack 3 is so large, and I am on dial-up, I downloaded it at the local library which has broadband. I brought it home on a CD and went to install it. It refused to unload the files and crashed my computer. What is going on here. I suspect, knowing Microsoft, that they have put in one of their 'clever tricks' (to put it politely) because they don't want people copying their software (perish the thought!). Can anybody explain, please?

Being able to post messages
by Guest attilathehun1- 2 replies

I'm running out of PCs to post messages with. It seems like I get a few weeks of messages with each PC. I'm finally down to my laptop and yesterday after I installed 4 updates I wasn't able to post here anymore. I did a total wipe out of my hard drive and now it's like factory new. Wiped the hard drive clean and now this thing is running like a fine tuned race car. This Dell 9400 was bogging down to the point where I couldn't close a webpage and half the time I'd get an error message saying report or don't report and the other half time I'd have to go into Task Manager to end the program. I'd try to maximize here and only half the page would max out and t…

I'm setting up a brand new xp pro computer - and I notice that on logoff an error message pops up. The problem is that the system does not stop - it continues to logoff and so I cannot read the message. I tried the event viewer - but didn't see anything there. Does anyone know how I can capture that message?

USB Voodoo? 1 2
by Guest jim- 30 replies

How can I make XP see an external USB drive as an internal hard drive. There is an article posted at http://www.msfn.org/board/A-Multiple-Partition-USB-Stick-with-Mult-t69211.html#entry474505 that claims to show how its done, but it has a link to a driver that no longer exists. I am still Googling, but haven't found an answer yet. I need to have XP see my external USB drives as internal drive so that my backup software will image the USB drives. Thanks! jim

For those with Symantec 2008 Products Upgrading to XP SP3
by Guest Thee Chicago Wolf- 0 replies

From Symantec: When you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista SP 1, a tool that is called Fixccs.exe adds numerous registry keys in many locations (some of them within the Symantec registry keys) but is unable to remove them. Because of these registry keys, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms: * Windows Device Manager is empty * Missing Wireless network adaptors or other hardware devices * Unable to connect using a wireless adapter They released a tool that fixes these issues at the link below: http://solutions.symantec.com/sdccommon/asp/symcu_defcontent_view.asp?ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=b32555cd-1b26-40…

I would like to create an account for my wife who is a normal user. In the new computer, there is no password Administrator account. I changed it to password protected and tried to create a new account for my wife. It said I must create an account with administrator right before any new accounts. I do not understand why I need more administrator account as I got one when I run the pc at the first time and would like to have one more account with some restriction that prevents virus/adware when the user surfs some unknown websites for whatever reasons. Can someone explain to me why I need to have three accounts: two administrator right and one normal u…
