When my computer was new that clicking that ICON would take me to a very nice photo editing program where I could do all kinds of neat things. What determines the order of tool bar items display
by Guest AAaron123- 12 replies

I have a folder containing links. I dragged it from the desktop into the bar at the bottom where it became a tool bar. I have it positioned so three items show. To see the rest I must click the >> What I can't do is arrange the order the items appear in. I even tried prepending the names with 1, 2,... I can't figure what determines the order. Not any of the file dates - I've checked that. Not alphabetically either. Can you give any info about this? thanks PS What's the names of the sections in the bar at the bottom of the screen? And the bar?

Notepad word wrap bug
by Guest Robert Hart- 9 replies

I recently investigated and documented strange behaviors in Notepad that have been bothering me for a while. Basically, if word wrap is on, and you save a file, Notepad inserts CR CR LF characters at the wrap points. (These characters are only in Notepad's display window, the file is saved without extra characters at the wrap points.) This can cause problems if you copy and and paste from Notepad into other windows. You can read more details here: Notepad bug: Saving with word wrap on inserts CR CR LF characters http://bavih.blogspot.com/2008/07/notepad-bug.html I tried searching online to see if anyone else had already documented this problem. I foun…

SP 3 anomaly #2
by Guest ManyBeers- 6 replies
Since updating to SP 3 I have noticed the Info Tips behind Taskbar fix--click Start, click All Programs, right-click any program and select Sort By Name no longer works. I have rebooted my computer 3 times since I updated so that will fix the problem temporarily until the Info Tips hide behind the Taskbar again in which case they stay there until I reboot. It's not that big of a deal, I mean I'm not going to remove SP 3 because of this. Anyone else notice this on their computer?

Outlook Express - deleting messages and then compacting has not reduced dbx file size
by Guest Rupert- 18 replies
My emails are important. I copied my Inbox to an archive subdirectory. Then I deleted from my Inbox all messages from 2002-2006. Then I compacted all files offline. The Inbox dbx file is still over 2gb. deleting all those messages and compacting the file doesn't seem to have affected the size of the file. Can someone help me reduce the size of my Inbox dbx file? I deleted messages by pressing the delete key. Maybe I should have right-clicked the messages and chosen delete. If that's the problem, can I fix that?

CD Writing
by Guest John- 10 replies

I have just wanted to burn a CD of some music tracks. I couldn't get Media Player to burn - the "Burn" button was gray. I couldn't do it by dragging files in explorer and selecting copy to CD. It kept asking me to insert a blank CD. Explorer - properties shows it blue - Zero free space and zero used. After trying several blank disks I tried burning some photos from Picasa - this worked. I then tried Real Player and it burned the CD without problems. It seems Windows XP / Media Player has a problem with burning - but other applications don't. Any ideas on what I could check?

WinXP will not shut down
by Guest Don Rist- 6 replies

Windows XP hangs during shut down. After saving configuration and playing the shutdown wav it just stops responding. This is a clean install on a Gigabyte GA-7N400 motherboard with an ATI 9250 128 meg video card. The only non-windows software installed is Norton Antivirus. Here's what I've done to try resolving the problem. 1. Booted into safe mode and confirmed that it would shut down from this mode. 2. Used msconfig to disable all services and start items, restarted and tried to shut down. No luck. 3. Used Device Manger tried to update the driver for everything on the device list. No luck. 4. Uninstalled Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.1, re…

Questions about Nero 8
by Guest PT- 16 replies

I'm looking for software with which I can easily: 1. duplicate unprotected CD's or DVD's 2. create data file backups. I was directed to Nero 8. But I found their website confusing. For example the Nero 8 Ultimate web page describes a program BackItUp, but I'm not clear whether this is a different program, or just a component of Nero. In addition, the Nero 8 Ultimate program looks as though its designed for a variety of tasks far beyond my needs. I'm not worried about the price, as much as ending up with a highly complex and hard to use program. Please advise -- PT
