No events are available
by Guest WSUS_ADM- 0 replies
hello all..... I am running WSUS 3.0 SP1 on Windows 2003 Standard edition with all XP clients......I noticed that when viewing the Windows XP SP3 report many of the clients which I know had SP3 installed (by WSUS) show the following message.... No events are available. This may be because the client has not yet sent the event or the events have been purged from the server. Please refer to %WINDIR% \WindowsUpdate.log on <machine name omitted> for details. The WindowsUpdate.log shows no errors as the update was successfully downloaded and installed some time ago......Does anyone know where I can confirm that the events are in fact NOT being purge…

Schedular just won't work
by Guest livetohike- 5 replies
Hi, I can't get the simple batch below to run from the scheduler via right- click/Run. (Nor does it work if I schedule it to run). When I run it from Explorer or cmd window it works fine. I am running it w/ an administrator account and password (but have tried other accounts) Batch file contains the following single line: echo %date% %time% >> Test.txt I can see the black cmd window 'flash' so it appears to run, but does not write to the file. The batch and output file (Test.txt) live within the MyDocument folder of the user running the batch. Test.txt should contain (and does when run manually): Thu 05/22/2008 17:58:08.98 moormansd Thu 05/22/…

XP computer with one USB mouse. In Mouse Properties - Hardware - entries for 2 mouses but only one mouse connected. If I delete one or both, reboot reinstalls 2 entries again. What can possibly make XP decide to install an extra mouse? Thanks for any thoughts.

Startup/logon screen
by Guest MikeB- 4 replies
On my desktop computer I have a weird problem. It has now happened with two applications I tried installing. Other applications don't cause this to happen. The applications (one was D-link's wireless config utilities, the other a VPN application) cause my Windows XP Pro SP3 system to revert the logon screen from the normal one with the user icons on the right to the "classic" login pane that pops up and one has to type the userid of a user to log in. I "fixed" it the first time round by uninstalling the D-Link Wireless config utilities, but I can't uninstall the VPN application - I need it. Any advice/hints on what could make the login screen flip and how…

Autoplay doesn't work correctly
by Guest Bandiit@the Pass.ca- 1 reply

I've had a couple of responses to my previous plea for help but the fixes tried did not work. When I insert a DVD movie in the player it automatically selects Media Center to play, REGARDLESS of the setting in the Menu "Windows can perform the same function, ETC:" Which wouldn't be that bad if MC would play but it doesn't. I can check the box "always do the selected action" and select some other player beside MC but MC always comes up. When I cancel MC and use the menu to open the DVD using Play, usually Real Player will start but not always I would like the option of having a choice. I have 3 other players. How do I get one of these to be the Autopla…

Cannot access TWEAKUI XP not administrator?
by Guest Jim Wilson- 4 replies
I have a weird problem and dont know how to correct it. A few weeks ago, I installed the Windows XP Powertoy (TweakUI XP). The problem is that today I clicked on the tweak UI icon in control panel and it failed to let me in, and said it had been blocked by the administrator. According to my computer, there is only one user set up in accounts and thats me. My account is listed as administrator, so how can I make TweakUI work again? TweakUI did work when I first installed in as I used it to hide a windows partition from the list of drives available in windows.... With this current issue, I find I cannot un-hide the partition, due to not being able to acce…

Desktop Icon Text Background color
by Guest Norm Dresner- 3 replies

Yes, I know this is an old issue and I Googled it until I was blind, but ... I have two (very different) WindowsXP computers here -- one is a 3-year-old Dell and the other a brand new one. One machine happily has a transparent background for the Icon Text and the other uses the Desktop Color. Both machines are set to the same wallpaper and I've even used the same Themes file in both machines to make sure that those settings are the same. I've set the Use Drop Shadow option in System - Advanced - Performance ---- I've even tried toggling it. I've changed the desktop color from white to black to gray and all I can get is the desktop color as the backg…

How do I roll out a screensaver with group policy?
by Guest vambo- 1 reply
Hi, I know I have asked the question here before but I have had so many different answers and still no further on. So here goes again. I would like to roll out a corporate screensaver through group policy and active directory (widows server 2003) to approx 150 desktop XP users. 1. Can I use a jpeg or does it have to be a .scr file? 2. If it is a .scr file, can anyone recommend a program that will create this? 3. Can anyone supply a step by step guide on how to set this up? I would really appreciate the answers to the above questions! thank you Rob.

Login Error at Startup
by Guest Dennis- 3 replies
Hi, Please help I get an error during startup and it says: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your Username and Domain are correct, then type in your password again". Seems like the system is trying to login automatically into the Admin account. Beneath that error message is the classic login box with the username "Admin" in it. I click OK, close that box and it brings me to my user accounts. I type in my password and all is well. Is there any way to get away this annoying login error msg? Please advice. Thanks in advance. FYI, I have 2 accounts, the Admin acct and I opened the Guests account. ===================================

A *particular* app running slowly?
by Guest Peter- 9 replies
The new WinXP SP3 PC is running fast, except (it turns out after a lot of tests) basically just one app: the Agent news/email program, which suffers massive disk activity anytime I do anything which accesses its database. AV software (Kaspersky) is disabled, and anyway the Agent database is excluded. Agent (Forte) don't know what this could be. Could Windows somehow managed to set itself to a low process priority for Agent? The PC is a 3HGz dual-core P4, 2GHz, 300HB HD (2x SATA mirror raid).
