cloning to a larger drive
by Guest Jo-Anne Naples- 18 replies

I'm using Windows XP with SP3. I have a 60GB internal hard drive in my 5-year-old Dell desktop computer and am planning to buy a couple USB external hard drives (I have USB2) to be used for cloning the internal drive, in case of a crash or other disaster of that sort. My questions: 1. If I buy a substantially larger external hard drive, will I be able to clone my internal drive multiple times til the space is filled, or is this something one can do only once--with subsequent backup/clones writing over the earlier one? If only once, I'm guessing I wouldn't need huge external drives. I don't have many photos on my computer, and I don't store music on i…

cloning, imaging, and backing up
by Guest Jo-Anne Naples- 20 replies

I use Windows XP, SP3, on a 5-year-old Dell desktop computer with USB2 ports and a 60GB hard drive. I'm about to buy an external hard drive (or maybe two of them) for backing up, and I'm confused about whether there's a difference between cloning and imaging. I want to do a few different things and wonder if one software package would do it all or if I need more than one: * Back up or clone or image my internal hard drive to an external USB drive in such a way that I can recover everything easily if my internal drive crashes. That is, I'd like to be able to boot from the backup and/or copy it to a new internal hard drive or a messed-up but functional old …

XP SP3 and Windows Installer
by Guest Don Singles- 2 replies

I have just recently reloaded 2 systems using the manufacture supplied Windows XP Pro w/SP2 disks. In both cases, when I downloaded updates from Microsoft update, I was immediately prompted to install SP3. I assumed this would be safe, but in both cases Microsoft Update was unable to install any post SP3 updates after I installed it. I ended up uninstalling SP3 running Microsoft Update agin, but this time shoosing to install other updates rather than SP3. In both cases, I was prompted to install a newer version of Windows Installer (to V 3.1). After installing this and THEN installing SP3, I had no issues. Tonight I started on a 3rd system and sk…

Problem with modem after shutting lid
by Guest sambrea- 0 replies
Hi, I have recently encountered a problem with my system, where after shutting the lid of my laptop to rest for a period of time because i have to go away, it no longer is able to encounter my family's wireless network, so i have to shut the computer completely off and restart it. It's a pain in the neck and has just recently started doing this, starting after 3 or 4 shuts, but now it's down to one. It's just plain annoying because I might have things I'm doing online that I don't want to lose the place of. Any help would be gratly appreciated.

Help creating new user account
by Guest Sally- 4 replies
I am trying to create a new user account for my sister. I have done this before with no problems. For some reason, I can't seem to get connected to the internet through this new user. It acts like it is going to "do it's thing" and a window pops up that says connecting and then customizing settings. The web address in the address bar is http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx It appears to run, status bar is full and says done at the bottom of the screen and then nothing happens and the computer freezes. I have deleted this account and tried to create a new one 4 different times now and this happens every time. Microsoft chat support couldn't help m…

Normally when you open a mapped drive in MyComputer, you double click the desired drive icon and a window full of files and folders appears. When I attempt to open a mapped drive in MyComputer by double clicking on it, it opens a window that displays the search companion along the left hand side, and the middle of the screen where you'd normally see files and folders is blank. If I open the mapped drive by right clicking on it and selecting "open," it displays the normal view. Any suggestions?

PC crash and PID codes and Microsoft help
by Guest dougvV- 1 reply

Hi, I run a small e-bay business from home. I have 4 PCs - 2 running XP HE, one running XP-PE, and one running ME (I have a few DOS only programs that just run better on ME). I had the power to the house go out a few weeks ago while all four PCs were on. The ME and the XP-PE came thorough without a problem. The two-HE copies have had problems. I finally got one back up and running. It works well. I had to purchase a copy of XP CDs to get the machine working. (no CDs came with any of the machines). The second XP-ME I had to reinstall with the newly purchased CDs. I had no problem re-activating on-line without talking to anyone at Microsoft. I have four (4…

SFC Issue after running Win XP Service Pack 3
by Guest Phil Day- 17 replies
I've just tried to run sfc /scannow after installing SP3 to my originally SP2 (Win XP Home Edition) Laptop. I do this a couple of times per month to keep the system in top running order. However, I now get a message shortly that Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 CD Now. When I insert my XP SP2 CD, I get a message stating that this is the wrong disk! Of course I installed the SP3 from the downloaded file from the Microsoft Website so I don't have a SP3 CD. Can anyone advise as to a work around for this problem please. -- Regards Phil Day…

slow shutdown
by Guest Richard Harison- 8 replies
Something curious happened the other day. My core-duo running XP Home SP2 with all critical updates has always shut down in about 8 seconds, which was much to my liking as it indicated (to me, anyway) an efficiently running system. Now it routinely takes 15-20 seconds to shut down. 1) tried system restore from Safe Mode to a date a few days previous--no change 2) checked msconfig for new startup services -- nothing different What baffles me is I essentially have changed nothing, save for a color change in display properties and I think MS had altered their Windows Update, requiring a download there. Any ideas? -- Regards, Richard Harison

SP3, Satellite Internet and browsing issues
by Guest mom2twoMN- 5 replies

Hello, I have satelite internet service (i have had it for 1 year) and have had no issues with it in all aspects of the useage. When I downloaded SP3 for XP lastweek i now have problems with my internet browsing. Everything seems bogged down and runs slower than before. Pre-SP3 my internet was very fast (well as fast as satelite can be) but post-SP3 i have had nothing but problems. What could have caused this issues after I down loaded SP3? The IP provider has assured me that the issue is with SP3. How do I roll back my PC to SP2? I need some instructions if tht is possible. Thank you all very much, the sooner I roll back to SP2 the better things …

What I need is for the window to stay open so I can access some dos menu functions. I have a command on the menu to close the window. Any tips, advance or needed info will be helpful. Thanks KJG
