Win XP Home Black screen after boot
by Guest Nigel Andrews (ITCanHelp)- 6 replies

PC starts OK, but after the Win XP progress bar it quickly goes to a black screen. Boots in Safe Mode, and I have done a number of Restore's, back a few days to no effect. Whilst I had some problems yesterday (1xBSOD, and some program errors) I suspect the video card may now have failed. But as it does display in Safe Mode am I wrong? I have tried setting the Boot to VGA but still no display, Can anyone advise me? Thanks Nigel

Explorer.exe frequent crashes
by Guest Dreamchaser- 1 reply

Dear MVPs and all, Hey people. I have good news following my previous post. My exlorer.exe still crashes frequently with unknown fault module. I've tried the sfc /scannow and searched for viruses/malware/spyware using updated Symantec Corporate Edition 10.5, Spybot, as well as cleaning up the Trojan.Vundo using tools from Symantec. BUT, I can now replicate the crash. It happens whenever I exit My Computer, Control Panel, or any folders then I'll have an error screen it restarts explorer.exe. Pored over solutions on the net and set "Launch folder windows in a separate process". Problem solved but now it crashes whenever I close the Network Connection windo…

"Not Formatted Errors"
by Guest JWHData- 0 replies

On my XP Desktop I get the "Not Formatted Error" whenever I try to read either a floppy disk or a USB stick drive. I have no problem reading the exact same USB drives on either my XP laptop or my Vista Ultimate 64bit desktop. When I try to format a floppy on the XP Desktop (from either Windows or DOS) it eventually fails. This error has only started recently. I have ran a full virus scan, full Spybot 1.6 scan, and SFC /Scannow with no issues showing up. All suggestions welcome

Stuck in XP re-installation routine
by Guest Seah Kai- 4 replies

The problem started when XP cannot sense the new SATA DVD drive I installed. I wanted to check thru Device Manger, but the 'System' does not load and there is an error msg. Thus I tried to re-install my XP OS using the CD. However at the beginning of the installation, this error msg appeared, "An exception occured while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sti_ci.dll, InstallWiaService"" There is a 'OK to terminate program' and 'cancel to debug' option, but no matter which one I click, the installation continues. This error msg appears another time, and another error msg appears," The instruction at '0x77e37eff' reframed memory at '0x77e37eff'. The mem…

Replacing C: Drive
by Guest Dave- 8 replies

Not sure this belongs on this list - any suggestions as to where I should go with this one would be welcome - Anyway, my 4 year old Dell 3000 is plugging along satisfactorily, but my main C: drive (40 g) is full. I have numerous other drives installed, but leaving all those out of the discussion (hard to do), is there a practical way to replace my main HD? The obvious problem - that's where my operating system is installed. Since I assume the main HD is also the source for most desktop fatalities, I though this might also give me a few more years on the rest the hardware- which seems to be running OK. Of course, everything does until the day in cr…

I am in need to install another win xp pro SP3 on the same Disk partitioned in C: and D: and formated in NTFS. I ask: Is it possible or there will be conflict? For the boot what is the best? I think to rewrite the command line in boot.ini, like it: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)Windows= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" /fastdetect This will work? Or then I tink also in use the magic boot from partition magic Could a valued consumer explain to me?

Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install 1 2 3
by Guest ju.c- 54 replies

"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)" installation fails on XP Pro SP3. Automatic Updates was the first try, after that failed I downloaded the file from Microsoft Downloads. That too failed, so I tried the Microsoft Update Site. Same thing - fails. It seems to do a precondition check and something tells it to stop installing. Not anti-malware software, system fully updated and working perfectly. Any ideas or sympathy? ju.c

DNS Settings
by Guest John- 7 replies

Multiple DNS implementations vulnerable to cache poisoning http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/800113 In response to the above security vulnerability, I'm trying to manually configure WinXP machine to query OpenDNS servers (or any other DNS server that's been patched). I'm doing this because the WinXP machine is currently using ISP DNS server and they haven't done anything to fix the problem. I doubt they will patch their DNS servers at anytime soon (I'm talking about ISP in a 3rd world country). If I configure my TCP/IP settings to use primary/secondary DNS from OpenDNS, what will happen? Will XP 'ask' primary DNS and if that fails, XP then 'ask' secon…
