Reinstalled XP on Dell-no video controller?
by Guest Ed from AZ- 4 replies
I purchased a refurbished Dell Latitude 600 with an XP Pro restore CD. On my device manager now, I have a yellow circle under Other Devices - Video Controller (VGA Compatible). I'm suspecting this may be why my DVD player won't work? On the Dell website, under Drivers, all it has is an ATI driver download (and a Roxio patch). Is this what I need? Or something else? Ed

PC Attempts to Restart Intermittently
by Guest saluki1net- 9 replies
I am running Windows XP SP2. The pc is attempting to restart on an intermittent basis. I have not found any consistancy in terms of a specific process that I am attempting to run when this situation occurs. Today, it re-started once when I attempted to open McAfee Internet Security, and again when I attempted to print from the web. When it attempts to re-start, it generally tries multiple (sometimes 10+) times before it re-boots and displays the desktop. I found the following error in the event viewer: The Server {C7E39D60-7A9F-42BF-ABB1-03DC0FA4F493} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout Any recommendations for troubleshooting proc…

'safely remove hardware' problem
by Guest kaloochi- 5 replies
I am unable to 'safely remove' my Freecom usb hard drive. Whenever i try i get the message it's being used by another program when it's not. I've tried Device manager> usb controllers>properties>power management and unchecking 'allow comp to turn off this device to save power' which worked once [maybe coincidence] but now it's back to how it was. I've heard this problem can lead to drives being completely wiped so i'd really like to sort it. I have about 30 gig of music among other stuff i'd be gutted to lose so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

"Fast User Switching" not working as intended
by Guest Test Man- 1 reply
Hi I have two PCs, both with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Dell Pentium 4 3.06 with HT and 1.5GB of memory but different graphics card (one NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 and one Intel Integrated 82845G). Both have two accounts created and sometimes they are both logged in at the same time (thanks to "Fast User Switching"). However, when I log out of one of the accounts (the 2nd one created), I am presented with a black screen instead of the welcome screen (which means I can't go back into the first logged-in-already account). What could be the problem?

changes in windows behaviour
by Guest brothersamati- 3 replies

Two recent changes, not simultaneous. The first: Folder window does not automatically refresh to display change in folder contents, e.g. if files are cut, pasted, deleted or renamed. Change only displays if I click on View/Refresh. The second. Double-clicking no longer opens a folder window. Instead it opens Search.

x-no-archive: I booted up from my recovery CD and deleted the current partition and reformatted and reinstalled windows. Normally when I do this I am at some point asked for the Windows serial # on the bottom of my computer. But this time no. Further more, my 80 gig HD is showing the following memory (note the discrepancy) when I right click on the C drive. Used Space 9,517,613,056 bytes 8.86 GB Free space 70,530,777,088 bytes 65.6 GB ________________________________________________ Capacity 80,048,390,144 bytes 74.5 GB (all iv'e installed is XP and Office XP). Why the 5.5 discrepancy for capacity? That seems large, no? Ke…

On my XP pro, I can not ever get the latest Java to work. It keeps comin up with the following: Several Java Virtual Machines running in the same process or Java Runtime Environment cannot be loaded I have found and tried to follow Sun's recommended "work arounds" but I have no success. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/6000060700.xml Sun does not seem to take this seriously since they have not posted a true fix or update yet. Can someone suggest a better solution or a link to the older Java versions?

Unable to Add Domain User to Local Admin Group.
by Guest Dtown Dawg- 5 replies
I can add the PC to the Domain, but when I try to add the Domain user to the local admin group of that pc I can't do it. I don't even get the option to select from the "DOMAIN" that I need to select the user from. I only get the option to select from that local PC. Another thing when the user logs onto the PC, the login script doesn't run and we get an error. I'm wondering if its a DNS issue as this is an issue at a remote office that we just hooked up and they are connected back to the main office through a VPN Tunnel. Any suggestions or ideas?
