When moving the cursor, it will suddenly jump to the side of the screen or the edge of the window that I am working in. It seems to happen in all windows: IE7, Firefox, Outlook Express, Excel I first noticed this problem after the March XP update. In late April, it appeared to go away. It came back with SP3. I have changed the mouse, but it does not influence the problem. Details. Dell optical mouse connected via USB port (I am using this one on another computer with no problems) HP optical mouse connected via standard green connector Dell Dimension 4700 Desktop, Pentium 4, 3GHz, Feb 2005 Win XP, Home, SP3 Any help is appreciated. I never did successfully install SP2 and now my computer won't allow me to do various things such as play videos etc. A friend said I need to uninstall and reinstall SP1 then install SP2. XP SP2 I'm trying to create a little batch file that will list all the dependencies for a given service. I found the following command on a Web site: FOR /F "TOKENS=*" %s in ('DependOnService <Service Name>') do @echo %s I have replaced the "<Service Name" wit "Spooler, but the command does not work. Instead, it just tells me that DependOnService could not be found. Can anyone tell me how to get this working in a simple batch file? --Tom

Dissallow programs on XP Home
by Guest Dan F- 2 replies
Hello All, I would like to dissallow certain programs on certain user accounts in XP Home. I know you can do this in XP Pro with the Group Policy, but that is not available on XP Home. Specifically, I'd like to dissallow Internet Explorer from runnng. I know that you can remove the icons, etc, but I really need it to be dissallowed for this user, so that other programs can't start IE, or so it can't be started from its folder. If there is a solution just for IE, that's fine, but one that has more flexibility would be a plus. I do need IE for other users. The solution needs to be free, and I am fine working in the Registry. Thanks, Dan

CRC failed in vcredis1.cab
by Guest AT and HMB- 4 replies

On two different MCE 2005 system when updating to the new AVG 8.0 anti-virus system I have problems. The download from AVG is OK, because I have it updating OK on a third similar MCE 2005 system. After download, when running the exe I almost immediately get (between quotes): "AVG Free Edition Extracting license_us.txt Extracting avgsetup.exe Extracting sporder.dll Extracting vcredis1.cab CRC failed in vcredis1.cab Unexpected end of archive" All of above is within a black background. In addition the last 2 lines are highlighted in green. Investigation of the AVG side leads me to the conclusion it is not an AVG problem. I'm at a loss as to why I have…

KB 898461 and 942764
by Guest DeeJay- 5 replies
I have an original WinXP Pro with SP2 setup CD. I created a new setup CD with SP3 slipstreamed into it and reinstall my system using this setup CD. WinXP Automatic Updates still picks up the following: 1) KB898461 Software update 898461 installs a permanent copy of the Package Installer for Windows version 6.1.22.4 2) KB942763 Daylight Saving Time update Just want to compare notes with everyone with a similar setup (that is: WinXP Pro with SP3 slipstreamed). Is this normal? Doesn't SP3 include the above updates? Thanks much.

Automate connecting to a remote computer in regedit
by Guest airwot4- 7 replies
I have a small toolbox application which is designed to automate common tasks. I would like to add a function that will send a host name string to regedit in order to open up the remote registry. Is there anyway to do this? I've been unable to find a command-line switch to accept host names and I would prefer not to resort to clunky keystrokes. The app is written in VB.NET 2.0. Thanks

Why is my system "syncronizing" ?
by Guest +Bob+- 4 replies
New XP Pro build, SP3. When I shut down this system, it pops up a window "synchronizing favorites with R: drive". It takes it a minute or so to finish. My favorites are actually stored on the R: drive (registry hack). However, they are not on the local system, so I can't see that there is anything to synchronize. My other XP/2000 systems have the same config and they don't do it. In addition, I haven't intentionally turned synchronization on, and in fact I'm fairly sure it's disabled in HKLM/Run where it was starting up (although I know I've seen it put itself back in there occasionally). How can I shut this synchronization process off?

nvidia / momentary black screen / refresh !
by Guest RJK- 1 reply

....just unnecessarily fought for an hour or more to fix a momentary "black screen" or "refresh" if you prefer, every time something is mouse clicked in nvidia control panel, .....after uninstalling and installing newer nvidia drivers. !!!! To cut a long story short, after a hunt on the web, spotted a couple of people who were told it was the "fault" of the monitor - I prodded the power off button on the monitor, (older Xiod / Samsung CRT), then after a few seconds turned it back on - "PROBLEM GONE !" ....so there you are, if you upgrade Nvidia drivers, and get a momentary balck screen, every time you click on something in nVidia control panel, or the s…

Urgent Help Please ... Computer powers up but nothing happens!
by Guest UKUser007- 20 replies
I'm really hoping that someone will be able to tell me what the problem is as our main computer with lots of work on it won't start up. It was fine last night and was turned off correctly but this morning after switching on and then putting the monitor on nothing happened. There was no whirring as it started, just silence. The power light was on the cpu but the second light didn't come on so nothing happened and the monitor stayed blank. To turn off the computer the on/off switch didn't work so I had to take the plug out and put it back in. I've checked all the cables are in and tried again but nothing. The computer was only purchased in Jan 07…

Mindboggling weirdness

Yesterday I wrote: I've been getting nasty blue screen crashes for awhile now, so I'm guessing I need some new hardware; probably the mamaboard. [i say this because my mouse is also acting funky. It stops and starts, jumping backwards, executing random button clicks and drags, and just generally acting annoying. I cleaned it, that's not the problem. It's a regular ps/2 mouse.] However, money has been tight for awhile so I've been living with it. Unfortunately, last night it crashed particularly badly and almost nothing works anymore. I can't bring up Outlook or IE. I can't open any folders, I can't open Control Panel. They all crash. I can still run …

by Guest WernerJB- 0 replies

I have been trying to resolve this problem now for a few days but not success. I have 2 XP machines in an peer to peer enviroment. One of them is a server with some Raid 5 drives attached to it, the other one is used only for running backup sofware for backing up to a robotic tape library. Booth computers work fine and I have access to all shared folders. However, on both computers the Program and the Windows Folders are locked and not accessible, but only when trying to access those folders from the other machine. For example I can access the Program and Windows Folder of from Server 1 just fine as long as I'm doing this from Server 1. I cannot accerss th…

Screensaver won't say on it shuts off after 10 minutes
by Guest Megumi- 3 replies

I had to reinstall Windows XP and I installed CA Solution Ultimate Suite for security. My screensaver which worked fine before now on stays on for 10 minutes then it goes back to my desktop and stays like that. I've tried everything from changing the screensaver to adjusting the times. I set it to hibernate, not to hibernate, to standby, do to nothing and to shutdown. I don't think that is the problem but something underneath that is turning it off. Please help (^_^)

Setting NIC to Gig speed
by Guest CB- 2 replies

I do not see this option in my NIC's setting, yet I know the NIC will support it. Is this a limitation of the driver or perhaps Win XP version? I'm sure this is a simple issue, but haven't run across this before. Any help would be appreciated.

need help with possible virus
by Guest Tim.T- 2 replies

I've just finished a complete virus and spyware sweep using ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7. I found two files in a Temp folder on another drive supposedly infected with the "ipWins" Trojan (I think that was the name). One or both files were named "System.dll" and when I rightcliked it to examine its properties, it didn't have what you'd expect. Instead it looked more like what you'd get if you rightclicked a JPEG or movie file. That made me suspicious. Anyway, after quarantining and deleting those files and emptying the Temp folder I noticed that the ZoneAlarm program group on my Start Menu has been emptied (it was there before), and even though I have "Hide…
