Knoppix unable to access XP hard drives
by Guest ChinaTrader- 1 reply
Just tried the new Knoppix 5.3.1 and find it really cool. But it is unable to read my SATA hard drives on either my Dell laptop or my desktop running XP Pro Sp2. The drive properties show the disks as mountable and the show up as hda and hdb but do NOT appear on the Knoppix desktop. The drives appear as the Windows drive volume names in the file explorer in Knoppix as Drive_C and Drive_D. But when I try to access them I get the following error: \"A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file {rejected message had interface \"org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume\" member \"Mount erro…

Installed SP3 on a fresh XP install. Everything went fine (accounting for the usual extreme time it takes to do this and the other BS). Now, all other updates from Windows update will download, but not install. IE7, SP3 for Office 03 etc. Anyone know WTF is going on? Thanks Bill

Can't delete 0 byte file, with no file type
by Guest michaeld121@hotmail.com- 18 replies

I’ve got a file that appears to exist, but when I try & delete it I get: “Cannot delete …. Cannot find the specified file”. I created it as a.txt with a long-ish file name (76 chars) as a reminder, but it now has no extension & is zero bytes. I can’t open it and the properties doesn’t give me much info. It’s on a drive (h:) that’s sync’d to a network and only appears when I’m not connected to the network. This makes it difficult to use things like ccleaner, deletefxpfiles, chkdsk etc. I’ve tried deleting it from a command line (tells me it doesn't exist) in safe mode (couldn't log on) deleting the folder and a bunch of other things … but no joy. …

Making an XP reinstallation disc
by Guest Matt- 20 replies
It used to be that manufacturers supplied a copy of Windows that you could use to reinstall the OS in case it got messed up. That seems to have gone out of style. My IBM ThinkCentre desktop has a hidden hard-drive partition with the files needed to reinstall XP. But what if the hard-drive goes bad after the warranty is expired? It looks like I lose the XP license. It seems unreasonable. So I want to make a CD or DVD that would reinstall XP---not backup all my documents---I would make a separate backup of my own data. I just want to be able to restore the OS to a clean state starting from an optical disc just as people used to do with the OEM r…

Not genuine OS error
by Guest cy- 3 replies
Hi, I have been fixing my friends PC over the past few days and have come down to the last problem. At the log on screen at start up of XP it says 'this is not a genuine copy of windows' in the bottom right hand corner. This is not the case as the copy is 100% genuine. I have managed to turn off the small reminder in the toolbar of the desktop but as yet have not been able to get the reminder off the log on screen. I called microsoft today who confirmed it was genuine and put me through to another department, this department then told me they were very busy and that i would get a callback over the next 3 days. I was wondering if anyone could …

Greetings, A few months back I had the same issue & followed the advice given: Delete NTLDR & copy back from Windows Installation CD Delete NTDETECT.Com & copy back from Windows Installation CD If these things didn't work, then I did the following: delete & create a new master boot record(FIXMBR & FIXBOOT) None of these things worked. So I went to Windows Install CD, chose option to re-install windows over itself, & now I get message with some kind of unreadable notation like the infinity sign. Please keep in mind I have gone through 3 HD drives, with the thought that the hard drive was the culprit. Now I am convinced the hard dri…

Windows Home Server

Can Windows Home Server software be installed on a spare pc (Pentium 4), and used as a home/web server, or do you have to buy the software and hardware as a system? I've googled, and found different answers. My home network runs Vista Home Premium, Windows Media Edition 2005, Windows XP Home, and Windows 2000 Pro. I'm connected to the internet via Comcast modem.

Outlook window closes when minimized
by Guest courtney nhc- 6 replies
Hi everyone. I'm having a problem with Outlook, where if I try to minimize the window, it closes instead (though the program is still running). I've found posts on here that suggest using the Taskbar Repair tool at kellys-korner-xp.com, but it didn't work. It appears to be an Outlook issue rather than a taskbar issue, because it doesn't happen with every program, just Outlook. Does anyone have any other ideas about what might be causing this and how I can fix it? I checked and Windows has all the recent updates, so I don't think that's the issue. If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Script on SP3
by Guest Gilbert_Voyer_Montréal- 2 replies

We are using a script to check some properties on workstations. Under XP SP2 the script opens a IE instance to display the current status and then it close the IE instance and the script stops. Under XP SP3, however, the script starts open the IE instance, displays the informations, but never close the IE instance before closing the script. Any idea why? I know that the version of the script host has changed from 5.6 to 5.7 but can't find the bug.

Shortcuts & Attachments Taking Ages to Open
by Guest Probability- 0 replies
Searched but cannot find a solution to this one! Shortcuts (desktop/ program list) and attachment (emails- Excel/ Word files) can take upto 3 minutes to open on my XP PC. During this time the egg-timer appears and often the machine just feezes. Eventually Word, or whatever, will open and things will carry on as normal. I have tried opening some of the same files as macro/toolbar buttons from within Excel/ Word and they are instantly opening. These are local files- not those on the network. This seems to affect M/Soft office files worst (Adobe are fine, for example) and is not consistent. A Word template has just frozen my PC for 2 minutes after clicking …

Need to install "Accessories"
by Guest Jeff Ingman- 5 replies

I reinstalled WinXP recently and just discovered that many... if not all... of the applets in Accessories did not install properly. What is the proper procedure to get them installed? I can find Paint.exe for instance but it won't start. Do I need to uninstall each applet before I try to install them. Also... do I have to use an XP disk to uninstall or reinstall all the applets? The retail disk I have is not the one installed on this machine. When I tried using the OEM disk from Dell it did not seem to work... at least not for uninstalling.

Australian Enquiry - Enterprise License I am trialling IEAK - IE7 on a XP Pro SP2 as part of a Domain. All work has been carried out as Administrator on the domain on a test machine. IE7 has already been installed. I have set up a branded Version of IE7 using IEAK. I have deployed the package and everything works except: The user with limited or security in active directory have access to an item in the new IE 7, that was disabled during the build. The "Green Messanger" icon appears. When clicked, it opens the programme. I had disabled it in the "manage addons section of the IEAK build, but it still shows up for the users. I can include a scr…

Next generation configuration
by Guest ~~Alan~~- 2 replies

I am buying my daughter a new laptop for college. Hardware wise, it will have 2G of memory, 160Gb disk, and a Dual-Core Intel processor. The college currently supports XP and has made a deal with various factions to have XP installed through December 08. I've heard talk of Windows v7 (post Vista) becoming available in about 18 to 24 months. Given Vista's history, will this config be enough or will I need more before she graduates. Can anyone comment? thanks, ~alan

winxp services deleted - please help

Many of the winxp services such as "plug and play" seem to have been deleted, i.e., under services under computer management, i see only about 15 services and all are Nero, Office, Canon camera etc - I dont see standard xp services such as plug and play. As a result I am having a lot of problems (my device manager, netwrok connections etc are all empty, the audio doesnt work - sound card isnt getting recognized etc.) For example, msinfo32.exe says "Can't collect information" for all the devices. How can I fix this? I am not sure about the exact source of the problem - my brother was using my system and it seems he manually registered a dll file (ole.dll or …
