Dual boot XP Pro & XP x64
by Guest webchimp- 1 reply

I have read through a number of entries regarding dual boot set ups and have had a go at using the bootcfg /rebuild command. My question is, what do you enter for the following? -Load identifier -OS load options My set up is as follows Drive C: XP Pro sp2 – general use Drive D: XP x64 – gaming I decided to dual boot as when I want to run a game and put the machine into SLI mode I have to re-boot anyway, so I thought I might as well have a clean set up with just the OS and the game. by Guest Damalulu- 3 replies

My computer says Ethernet Controller is not working properly and if I have the installation disk to insert it and continue. I don't know what that is. I know what Ethernet is, but what is the controller. I am having tons of problems with this HP computer. It has XP. It has always been Mr Dependable until the other night when I tried to download some drivers for a USB cable to use for my cell phone. I may have gotten a virus. Anyhow, it's a mess and I'm trying everything I can to fix. Even boot up is weird, pushing F8, ESC to just get Windows to load. Someone stated I should start up in safe mode and pick, last known working something. That even m…

I want to forever stop all automatic changes to my startup menu in XP. I am using Spybot S&D's Tea Timer which does a good job of preventing the registry changes, but everytime I reboot, it get the post boot confirmation pop up. I check the box to "do not show this warning again" but still get the warning every time I reboot. Can I completely block all non physical startup changes somehow and do away with teatimer or is there a way to modify the registry to kill the post boot confirmation? I do want the ability to manually input into MSCONFIG. I have been dealing with this for years and would really like to find a solution. Thanks...gary

Task Scheduler Result - 0x1
by Guest GSP@DavClaServ- 2 replies

I have set up a scheduled task to run on an WinXP home PC. The task simply calls a batch file to move some files across our LAN to another PC. If I run the batch file by dbl clking it works fine but the sceduled task returns a code of 0x1 which according to the MS support pages means "An incorrect function was called or an unknown function was called." (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308558). When setting up the task I browsed to the batch file to select it so I know the path and file name are correct . How is it that something so simple can be so complicated? Can anyone shed some light on this? TIA Steve

How to check from command line if a certain URL exists?

How can I check from command line (!) if a certain URL e.g. http://192.168.0.47:4050/aaa/bbb/m.html exists? Again: Typing in the URL in browser is not the way I am searching for. It should be detected from command line Sabine

I'm using Robocopy with the following switches (with /E only when copying folders): /E /w:15 /r:14 /TEE /LOG+:%LOGFILE% /NJS /NP If a network connection is lost (i.e. if I unplug the cable), and max retries are reached, Robocopy moves to the next file in the folder and retires that one 14 times every 15 seconds. It repeats this for every file in the folder. For a folder with lots of files, this is a big waste of time. Also, if any files fail, and subsequent files get copied successfully, this is still an overall failure (for most situations). I know that exit codes can be used in this case, but it still doesn't make sense to me that it should attempt …

Extended Desktop for XP
by Guest UNOH_Tech_Support- 1 reply

I am in the IT Dept. at The University of Northwestern Ohio and am looking for a solution similar to this. However, this will take place in the cashier's office and the cashier will need to see the window that is on the extended/mirrored desktop as well. The student looking at their info on the 2nd monitor should only see the one window that they need to see. There was a powertoy from Microsoft a few years back but it was made for Tablet PC only: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/tabletpc.mspx It was called Extended Desktop for Tablet PC. I tried installing that on my WinXP machine hoping for a miracle but it did not work. Any…

How do you fix a possible corrupt registry?
by Guest RHinNC- 2 replies

Tried installing SP3, Received Access denied error. Did what Microsoft suggested. While running a script that manually gives access to each registry key I received a BSOD. (The script was provideded by Microsoft-For further information please see my post in the Microsoft Update newsgroup) Now, the kicker is this PC is 3 years old and the only time I have gotten a BSOD was trying to install SP3, and 3 years ago a bad video driver. So my question is, how do I find the error in my registry? Thanks

re-installing windows with upgrade disk
by Guest JC in vancouver- 6 replies
I would like to give my old computer (Pen III 498MHz 128Mb RAM) away but I would first like to clean out the hard drive. I am going to buy something like WipeClean to overwrite the hard disk. Then I would like to re-format the hard drive. The computer originally was bought with Win 98 OS. I upgraded the OS to Windows XP pro and have since installed SP2. I do have the upgrade disk. My questions is will I be ab;e tp re-install the Window XP on the re-formatted hard drive with the upgrade only. If, as I suspect, that I will not be able to, then what is my best option to re-install the Windows XP OS? Thank you in advance for all your suggestions.

Save yourself some *major* grief. *Please* read this prior to applying XP SP3: Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 Of *** special note **** read the " If you are running antivirus software " heading. About half way through the KB article there are some *invaluable* links to other KB articles for fixes possible issues that may arise during the application of SP3: " Troubleshooting Windows XP SP3 installation " MowGreen [MVP 2003-2008] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten ===============

Rights problem - Even the administrator is locked out, but I don'tsee why
by Guest Will Pittenger- 21 replies

I needed to lock users out of a select folder due to privacy concerns. I know not to deny to all users and then attempt to allow in just select users. So I locked out just the users I needed to stay out. Then I found myself forced to reinstall Windows. In the new installation, I tried something slightly different with that folder. I create a group containing just the members that had to stay out. I then denied to that group rather than to individual members. Trouble was, somehow, it acted like I was part of that group. (I could see the files, which others weren't supposed to be able to do, but that was it.) I never was. I verified that I wasn't b…

My understanding is that when I plug a new USB device into windows xp, the device's serial number is polled and(if found), a series of registry entries are created. Later when I install the driver for this new device, the driver is associated with the serial number of the device. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have over 100 USB devices with unique serial numbers. Each time I connect a new one, I'm required to re-install the driver. My intent is to gather the serial numbers from the manufacturer and replicate the registry entries created by a single driver install, for all the other USB devices. Can this be done? Is there a better way? Thanks in adva…

XP File Download window: Open option no longer works
by Guest Chris K- 3 replies
When I proceed to download an e-mail attachment, the standard XP window pops up asking me if I want to open or save the file. The Save option still works, but with the Open option, either nothing happens or the program associated with the file is activated and produces an error message. Has anyone else been experiencing this program or know what I did to cause it and how it can be fixed? It's nothing serious - just annoying. It never used to do it before. Unfortunately, I've waited too long since it started to make use of System Restore.

Stop New Hardware Probing
by Guest Jay- 7 replies

XP-Pro SP1 I just installed a new Logitech Keyboard/Mouse combo - USB with the dongle plugged into the back of the computer. May be a coincidence but every few minutes, the system probes for new hardware, I'm supposing USB connections. A small icon appears in the system tray whilst this occurs and then disappears. Hard to describe the icon but is dark-green and about the same size as the systray icon to "safely remove hardware". Clicking this icon does nothing. Interrupts the system while typing and sometimes loses characters as typed. Like I said, may be a coincidence with the Logitech install as this never happened previously. Any idea how to disable …
