Trouble with mu USB connection
by Guest Walter R.- 5 replies

My old digital camera was USB I compliant. No problem with windows XP SP2. My new camera is a fast USB II model. When I connect it to my computer, a box pops up saying: There is a high-speed device attached to a non high-speed port. It then tells me that my computer has no high-speed USB port. There is no provision for stopping this pop-up, only an option to "close" the box. This Win XP box pops up every time I transfer images from my camera to my computer. Is there any way to stop this pop-up box? Could this possibly be hidden somewhere in the "services" section? -- Walter http://www.rationality.net -

no log-off, turn-off at Start button
by Guest Jo-Anne Naples- 5 replies
I'm using Windows XP with SP3. Tonight, I clicked on the Start button to shut down the computer, and there was no log-off or turn-off button to click on (everything else was there). I tried a couple more times and then ended up using CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up Task Manager and did the shutdown from there. I don't think I had done anything unusual beforehand (unless plugging in a USB flash drive and going through the "safe to unplug" routine counts; tonight was the first time I'd done that). After the shutdown, I turned the computer back on, and now the missing buttons are back where they belong. Any idea of what happened and what I can do to keep it from …

Recovery Console for SP3
by Guest Luigi M Bianchi- 22 replies
I have XP Pro OEM, fully updated, including SP3. Unfortunately the Recovery Console was not installed on the machine by the manufacturer. If I try to install the RC from c:\i386, I get the famous "error reading information from netmap.inf" error. My first question: in case of an emergency, can I use the old RC.iso which is available from several sites? My second, related question: must the Recovery Console be 'SP3-updated', or is it independent of the actual version of XP running on the machine? If it is dependent, how can I update the RC CD to SP3? Thank you for your help. /luigi

Task Scheduler "Keyset does not exist"
by Guest Peter Lebensold- 2 replies

Working in XP Pro, SP2, Task Scheduler will not work. I keep getting the message ... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ General page initialization failed. The specific error is: 0x80090016: Keyset does not exist. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cannot find any solution (there is a reference to a solution for Windows 2000, but it doesn't appear to cover XP). I did try 252143_ENU_i386_zip.exe ... but that doesn't appear to have made any difference. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

Auto assign drive letters
by Guest Jasper Recto- 2 replies

I have had this issue with several Windows XP workstations. Whenever I plug in a external storage device like a thumb drive, it assigns a drive letter that is already in use by a mapped drive. I can go in and manual change it but the next time I plug it in, it does it again. Any ideas why this happens? How can I fix this? Thanks, Jasper

Can't move favorites in Internet Explorer 7
by Guest DS- 0 replies

Hello, A domain policy hide the drive C:\ for the users in our domain. Only the admins can see and browse the drive C: . All users have full control permissionais for their profile folder. With IE 6, all users can full manage Favorites without any problem (add, delete and move). After installed IE 7, administrators still can full manage favorites, but the other users only can add favorites and folders. Now, the others users can't move favorites from one folder to another folder. Do you have any idea? We have Windows XP desktops. Thanks and Best Regards Duarte S.

Hi, I running windows xp pro, w/sp2. I'm not sure when it happened, but i seem to have lost windows installer. I received the following error (which seemed pretty standard for everything wrong with the installer).."windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe Mode (which I wasn't), or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance". I got the error when I tried to remove (ABBYY) it, part of the (OCR) software I received with my lexmark all in one, using the add/remove programs button in the control panel. I tried the uninstall function in the l…

way to clip content from browser
by Guest Bob Day- 4 replies

Using Windows XP Pro with latest IE and all updates... Is there a utility that will allow you to cut/clip a certain part of a browser page and paste it into another program like word? I currently do a print screen and then past that into word and crop to accomplish the same thing, but there has to be a better way. MS Notes has such a tool that works well, but only works pasting things into notes (where you have not crop capability). Please advise. Bob

Slow Windows Xp Boot, Follows Disc upgrade to SSD
by Guest drsox- 0 replies

I just bought a Mtron 16GB SSD to speed up the boot/startup process and it has caused a delay in the Xp boot sequence !!!! WinXp SP2 starts just fine but then I get the white bar with vertical stripes (that disappear across the screen - not very fast). Then it just sits there for 40sec (must be waiting for something) and then runs like the clappers. After welcome screen it goes very fast. I have tried this on two PCs. On one it is OK, on the other I get this problem. On the one with the problem, the details are : Mobo Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA BIOS at 2.60 (just updated - no change to problem) ATA DVD drive : Samsung (on Master1) Mtron 16GB drive on SATA1…

XP problems since KP890830 update
by Guest jw4au- 9 replies

On 9/14/07 I noticed that the volume control slider would not stay up. The slider has a dash-mark outline around the control. When the slider is moved up the volume comes on but then the slider falls right back down and the volume is lost. Also, spell check features in Office programs are grayed out so the spell check will not work (word suggestions are visible but grayed out too). The last update installed prior to these problems starting was KB890830 on 9/12. I tried to uninstall but it is not showing up in Add/Remove Programs or in the Windows Directory (but the Microsoft site says it was successfully installed). System Restore did not work eith…

KIOSK Mode on XP Pro
by Guest White43210- 0 replies
I have a public computer I am using steady state to secure. I would like to AUTOLOGIN and open IE to a specific site on login. I have achieved all of this by settings in the registry. The kiosk is running IEXPLORE.EXE as the default shell and it opens the webpage successfully in a kiosk mode. However, I would like to assure that if IE is closed it will automatically restart or reopen. AUTORESTARTSHELL is set to (1), but when I ALT-F4 the IE window closes and does not restart. I'm left with a blank blue inaccessible desktop. Is there any way to correct this? Thanks, White43210

Sonic Update Manager
by Guest Preston Hamlin- 6 replies
For the last few days, every morning when I start up my computer, the Sonic Update Manager pops up and asks for a disk that I do not even think exists. Whenever I try to close the first window, the progress bar starts up, and in less than a second, the error window pops up again. I am stoping the loop with the Task Manager. I have read previous threads and already know the obvious solution of removing it, but I do not know how important this is to my computer. I have recently downloaded a bunch of updates from Microsoft, but this came about from an automatic update. Is Sonic an important or powerful program? Do I suffer without it?

Restarting on shut down
by Guest Brooks W.- 1 reply

Well I have looked through the messages and all things seem to point to Roxio issues. I do not have any Roxio products installed. This is a new build, clean install of XP, XP SP2. I also updated to IE7 and the latest Windows Media Player. I did a few things before installing SP2 and it worked fine. Due to the time of day, I shutdown and called it a night (shutdown went fine and PC powered down). The next day I installed SP2 and the updates. Since then the PC wants to restart every time I shutdown. All the hardware is new and only 2 items connected via USB hub and 1 directly into port on the motherboard (External USB Harddrive) -- Brooks W.
