Hi, i must have run some application that has changed some of my windows XP settings, i noticed that when i enter ALT-TAB keys to switch between active applications, the little popup window that has all the application icons listed will only stay up for a couple of seconds and then goes away before i release ALT-TAB keys, so i never get a chance to select the application i want to switch to. is there a registry key or somewhere that control this setting? Thanks for the help.

Access is denied error
by Guest sawyer4444- 5 replies
Hello, This is question probably has a simple answer, but I can't figure it out. For backup purposes I copy all of a partion to a partition on a different hard drive. I use following xcopy command "xcopy E:\*.* I:\*.* /EXCLUDE:C:\Copy_From_CDEF_to_GHIJ\ExcludeE.txt /s/e/c/h/r/k/y/d/g/o" I've been doing this for years with no problems. Both the source and target partions are NTFS partitions. I run the batch files as a user with full administrator permissions. My target partition was getting short on space, so I compressed it. Now when I run the batch file, I get "Access Is Denied" error messages. I've tried giving all the directories full…

Hi, After cloning XP, there are some settings we need to change manually. And to save time, i deciced to code simple MFC programn that changes these things automatically. So user could easily type wanted IP address etc. Settings we need to change are network settings like IP, DNS, joining domain etc. Other things are "Show icon in notification area when connected, "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity", "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network", "Time to display list of operating systems", "Time to display recovery options when needed". I think changing IP and joining domain is easy to do using netset that is controlle…

After Re-Install More than One Default User Folder
by Guest ridgerunner- 3 replies
My PC is a Dell Optiplex GX280 and I am running Windows XP SP2. My warranty period is over. I re-installed Windows after running the system more than 3 years. I assumed a re-install would wipe out everything and replace it with a new installation but I do not think that is the actual case. I have an "All Users.Windows" folder and an "All Users" folder. The All Users.Windows folder is available as a shared folder but not the other folder. Does anyone know why this happened? How can I fix this? tia, ridgerunner

by Guest Eric- 13 replies

Under XP, my PC has two HDD, one of them is for backup only. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to setup a schedule to backup everything from the first HDD into the second HDD periodically. Furthermore, can I keep 6 months backup copy? after 6 months, all the past backup will be deleted and release the storage space for new backup copy. This routine will do it forever. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions Eric

Task Manager: Page File Usage > 0 ?
by Guest PeteCresswell- 0 replies

When I look at Windows Task Manager | Performance | PF Usage, I get a consistant half-gig (545 mb at the moment). Yet Physical Memory (K) says I've got (at the moment) 143,742k available. Two questions: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Do the PF/Physical reflect an opportunity for more optimization? i.e. If I've got physical memory available, wouldn't it be better tb using that instead of the page file? 2) Is PF usage unconditionally an undesireable thing? i.e. If I add enough memory and tweak the right settings, could I get it down to or close to zero? -------…

Odd Keyboard Poblem
by Guest Neil- 2 replies
Does anyone know of any way to change the regional setting for a keyboard other than via the control panel? I have a friends Dell laptop and the keyboard was typing the @ sybol when I press " and vice versa. Realising this was probably caused by the regional setting being wrong I went and changed then in 'Control Panel' this seems to not have worked as my symbols are still reversed. Is there any where else I can go to change the settings or does anyone have any other thoughts on what might cause this. Thanks in advance Neil

I have Windows set to launch items with a single click, and never had any problems, but suddenly, if I click on the title bar for a window, it will resize, and if I click on a word it is selected, rather than just placing the cursor there. This just started. How do I fix this? Thanks, Sue

Dell Monitor USB ports don't recognize some devices
by Guest Lee M.- 5 replies
I have a Dell LCD monitor with 4 auxiliary USB ports. I have my keyboard and a Sandisk card reader attached and both work fine as does my Garmin GPS when I need to upload a new map. When I plug in a Sandisk MP3 player or my Kodak digital photo frame, neither one shows up in Explorer. Both are recognized by my Vista laptop. The mobo USB ports recognize everything that is plugged into them. Does this sound like an XP problem (I am running XP Home SP2) or a hardware issue? Thanks.

Path-Extension fo Subdirectories
by Guest anonymous- 0 replies
Hello group, is there a way to automatically include subdirectories within the environment variable %PATH%. I know that one can extend this by adding another paths by a ";" + "<path>. But what I want to do is create a folder with often used tools - but each of them should be placed in it's own subfolder (with dll's, docs and so on). I want to use these tools in scripts by just calling the name of the tool + params (without pathname) on the one hand. On the other hand I don't want to add a path extension for every further tool on each machine but instead only e.g. set PATH=%PATH%;c:\tools Under Unix I'd just link the stuff. tia marco

by Guest El.Plates- 6 replies

Hi, have been trying to help a friend of mine resolve an Internet connection issue. He is running XP with SP2 and connects to the net via AOL using an Ethernet cable and a Belkin router. All was fine until last Wednesday when he couldn't access the net. I have had a look at the PC and notice that the system is trying to access an IP address. Have been through 2 very unhelpful phone calls with AOL Technical backup the end result being that they can see the router but what ever we try we cannot change the IP Address.Their diagnoses of the problem is that there are corrupt files preventing the connection being made however they couldn't tell me what these corru…

Windows update dialog question
by Guest Jeff Johnson- 11 replies
I have Automatic Updates set to "download and notify." Sometimes Windows will download the updates but it won't put the yellow shield icon in the tray. I don't know there are updates until I go to shut down and get the "Install updates and shut down" option. I NEVER blindly install everything; I always review what's there. But without the shield icon, I don't know how to invoke the dialog. Is there a command I can issue (or even an API I can call; I'm a programmer) to force Windows to display that dialog?

by Guest Alexandra- 4 replies

On startup I get the error message: service.exe application error. The application failed to initialize properly. Oxc0000005 Click on OK to Terminate the application. When I research a fix for the 0xc0000005 it shows that message is for a windows NT problem. I don't have windows NT. I have no idea what that is! I have Windows XP Home Edition and I haven't installed any new software. I was using my flip video last night and am sure that I clicked on the icon to "remove safely" before I removed it. My computer was working fine when I shut it down last night. I did download a PDF from a website. Hope I don't have a virus! I've tried starting in sa…

by Guest Laughingstar~*- 2 replies

I have XP Pro, SR 2 and 3; all updates current. When I start up, there's a new pop-up message from my sys tray that's something like: "Disconnect Epson (scanner ..) from its current port, and then connect to another hub shown in BOLD type (that is Generic USB Hub - [2 PORTs available]). What on earth is this, and how do I find the "ports" or hubs? This just started, and I've been using my scanner for 3 years, including with Kurzweil. I have adaptive software for the blind on my system. The most recent item I plugged into my CPU, was my Pentax Digital Camera to download photos to SEE them in ZoomText. Thank you very much. -- "It is a paradox that e…
