( OT) Supercomputer Built With 8 GPUs
by Guest David- 1 reply

- Something to think about: Researchers at the University of Antwerp in Belgium have created a new supercomputer with standard gaming hardware. The system uses four NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards, costs less than €4,000 to build, and delivers roughly the same performance as a supercomputer cluster consisting of hundreds of PCs. The guys explain that 8 GPU's get the same performance as 300 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz processors Cost is 4,000 Euros. http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?no_d2=1&sid=08/05/31/1633214

I set up a friends peer-to-peer network a few years ago. everything has been working well until recently (an he claims nothing has changed on any machines, ha!). All 4 computers are WinXP SP2. Every computer is seeing all the other computers on the network shared folders & printers. The laptop does still connect to the internet The laptop can ping the other computers successfully All computers are part of the same workgroup and on the same subnet No viruses or spyware detected on any systems AV and (Windows) firewall have been disabled …

MS Office Apps Want to Restart after Shutdown
by Guest RickB- 1 reply
Hi, I'm using XP Pro with SP2 and MS Office 2007 with SP1. Just recently, all Office Apps give me the following error box when shutting down: "MS Word/PowerPoint?Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconveneience. Restart MS Office Word/PowerPoint/Excel? Please tell MS about this problem." Being the nice guy that I am, I've been telling MS about the problem for weeks now, to no avail. I already tried repairing and uninstalling/reinstalling Office several time....no good. Thoughts, prayers, answers, technology sufficiently advanced as to be indistinguable from magic? Thanks, Rick B

Reloading Widows XP
by Guest dickbelle- 4 replies

I bought a used laptop with XP Pro. Works great, but I finally figured out why I can't do Windows updates past SP2 - my Windows is probably not genuine. I went and got a brand new copy of XP and want to install. Do I have to totally wipe out the HD and do a clean install and all the backing up and reloading of software, or is it possible to load my new copy of XP right over the old, and update that way?

Product Key discrepancy
by Guest Mike Easter- 7 replies

I purchased a Compaq Presario SR2027X from HP/Compaq with Win XP Media Center 2005 preinstalled. It has an official Proof of License Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the side of the case with a Product Key code. There is also a productid key in the registry hkey_local_machine which is accessible by a number of tools including regedit. The stamp on the side and the regkey are not the same. I am a complete newbie to the nuances of such as WPA and MS license enforcement practices, as this is my first XP OEM license to deal with its complexities and user disadvantages. What is the significance of a discrepancy (somewhere) in my productid code in the perf…
