Remove Shotcut in All User Profile ....
by Guest Peter- 1 reply

We would like to remove a shortcut of a particular application in the All User profile that has been migrated to another product. However, the end user doesn't have administrative privilege. Can they remove the shortcut in "All User" profile ? If not, is there any way so that the shortcut is removed (At least in his / her profile) so that it will not confuse with the new product shortuct ? Thanks

OT: gpu / UT3 help please !
by Guest RJK- 0 replies

Here's hoping there's a knowledgable gamer in here ! ....after lots of tweaking, to retain a minimum 15-20 fps, so as to keep a darned game - UT3/patched to 1.2, and to have at least the beginnings of a semblance of "responsiveness," (on this old "was" a Celeron 2.6 256mb ddr266 with shared graphics" ! ..."now" just a little better - P4 2.5ghz, 768mb ddr266 and agp nVidia 6200 ...and annoyingly slow 5,400 rpm Samsung "spin*something or other hd that Packard Bell ought to be ashamed of themselves for ever having sold - even at that time - iXtreme 6052 !!! ....so now with the minimum spec. agp 350mhz gpu, and texture and rendering etc set as high as it …

ageia PhysX ?
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

Does anyone know anything about this. It was installed into a Packard Bell iXtreme 6052 / XP Home ed. i.e. there was an icon for it in control Panel. Glancing through :- http://www.ageia.com/physx/faqs.html#3 ....it seems to be a software accelerator / part of a game called Unreal Tournement 3, which appears to make use of some hardware ...if installed ? Well UT3 was in there, I uninstalled it. PCI slots are all empty / the machine is using onboard SiS 650 graphics chip. I'm guessing it invited itself into this machine when UT3 was installed ? Was there any benefit to having it in there, even though the "partner" PhysX chip was never in there ? ....ha…

I have media center in a regular window. I watch TV while I surf. I pushed the top bar beyond my reach and I can no longer grab the top of the media center window and move it or size it (The right edge is also out of my reach). I tried to find ini or registry settings but was unsuccessful. Any help would be appreciated.

System Restore Failure
by Guest Richard Wyllie- 4 replies
Several times of late as I have tried to use the system restore feature, it has told me that the operation failed. I tried again today to restore to a point where I had installed the Avery Wizard, which I was having trouble getting out of my system. Again, it told me that it could not complete the restore. I thought it might have something to do with my Norton Anti-Virus/Internet Security, so I disabled it and tried a restore point from a few days before. Again it failed. Does anyone have any idea about what the problem may be? Thanks

Hi, Just been working on a young ladies PC, on which I installed XP SP3 a couple of weeks ago, ....including installing and uninstalling Nvidia Ntune | and having to uninstall that :-( ....uninstalled and installed latest nvidia Forceware drivers for older 6200 AGP card...two or three times ! anyhow, ...a while later after trying to install the "User profile hive cleanup service," her system box had lost the *.msi filetype association, and I had to manually put it back in to Windows Explorer | filetypes list to get it to install. so I'm wondering is this was a fault in SP3 as in :- http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=33406 or if my fighting …

multiple iexplore.exe "kind boob.exe" LITEDRIVECHIC.exe
by Guest robinpain- 3 replies
My Windows XP was slow to load and gave an "END NOW" "...loose data..." popup on exit - it was running slow because there were two iexplore.exe running in processes. I loaded the free version of AVG and it found and removed generic10.YLG But the problems remained (sdfix did not fix it either). Eventually I fixed it by using hijackthis that showed up kind boob.exe LITEDRIVECHIC.exe And when let hijackthis fix the registry entries for both and then used CCleaner and cleaned everything and then deleted kind boob.exe LITEDRIVECHIC.exe from C:/Windows/Prefetch/ and rebooted, it worked i.e. both copies of iexplorer.exe no longer ran as processes in th…

Second Alt+Ctrl+Del required after logon
by Guest Roger Hunen- 0 replies
Hi, I have a weird problem: after I logon to Windows XP Pro I have to press Alt+Ctrl+Del another time for the logon to complete. I run Windows XP in Windows classic mode. To logon I press Alt+Ctrl+Del and then enter my username and password. The logon dialog now disappears but after 2-3 seconds there is no more disk activity and the logon seems to hang. I then have to press Alt+Ctrl+Del again to make the logon process continue (pressing any other key has no effect). Now the logon continues as usual ("Loading your settings", etc.) and the desktop appears. From that point onwards the systems functions normally. As far as I can tell the problem happens only at …

permissions fiasco
by Guest payprplayn- 2 replies

I originally posted this on someone else's question thread, but I thought I'd repost it on a fresh thread, so it's not 4 or 5 pages back. anyway, my problem is with permissions in windows xp. I know I need to get to the security tab in the properties window to edit them, and every place I look for an answer (including the other thread) says I need to go to the view tab in the folder options window and uncheck "Use simple file sharing." I'm trying to do this, but I don't seem to have a "Use Simple File Sharing" box in the view tab of my folder options box. I wonder if it's because I messed up my permissions so thoroughly. See, I'm running a dual boot …

Wierdness after AVG 8.0 up grade
by Guest Anthony Diodati- 14 replies

Not sure if it's related, but after AVG 8.0 up grade, google advanced search seems to be acting strange. Maybe I would be better at an IE group, sorry if this is not the correct group to post this. Takes a long time to search, and any "find" I go to I get a lot of slow downs, and Internet explorer cannot display the web page, also then seems to affect other pages I have open. If I close all my IE windows, and open a new one, all seems fine again. Don't know if it's related to AVG or not. Or could google advanced search have an issue. Am running IE 7. No problems with it till now. Thanks, Tony

Start Menu Set up
by Guest Godenjoyer- 3 replies

Am I correct in my observation that the Windows XP Start Menu only contains recently used programs and documents? That is, it is not possible to set up what programs and/or documents that you want to have accessable at all times whether you use them often or not. This option is only available in the classic windows mode, Correct?

Dell Dimension 8400 computer working fine one day, the next, it won't completely boot and freezes at blue screen asking for Windows XP Home Premium Sp2 CD to be placed in CD drive. We set boot sequence to CD drive first, the CD activation light comes on, however, nothing happens; we press Enter and end up at the blue screen again asking for the XP SP2 CD to be placed in CD drive. We have tried this with the full version XP SP2 CD and with Dell's Reinstallation CD. Thanks for any help available.

Windows XP changing User Profile
by Guest Archie- 8 replies

Windows XP Home Edition SP2 + post SP2 patches up to May 13, 2008. DHCP from Linksys router, Running MSSQLServer in background. Have been running this computer for several years. I booted into safeMode to run some virus checks and when I rebooted my user profile had been changed. I did some research in these discussion groups and came across the post of 4/15/2008 “Losing Windows XP Profile Association” from John. Further research in C:\Documents and Settings showed that the original Administrator and HP_Owner directories where still there and still had the correct information but two new ones had been created. I now have: Administrator and …

I am running Windows XP SP3 with all updates up through yesterday (May 27). Starting today when I select Tools|Windows Update, IE7 shows one green bar in the completion window in the status bar and then hangs. It requires Task Manager to close it. The machine has SpywareBlaster, Spybot, AdAware, AVG 8 Free Edition and Windows Defender on it. AVG's email and LinkScanner are disabled. What can I do to fix or at least diagnose this problem?
