Maybe off-topic ? Video Games cause monitor to "go black"
by Guest Ch33zst34k- 2 replies

I recently upgraded my Nvidia drivers for my home-built rig running XP, SR3. Video card is NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (640 MB) . All my games used to run fine before SR3 and driver update and simply restoring system doesn't see to help. My amateur guess is that the issue is related to either monitor resolution and/or frame rate since games work okay on CRT monitor, however my Viewsonic LCD flat panel goes black upon game start - I can verify that games are booting because i do get load screen initially, but then screen goes black but audio is clearly playing. I am forced to reboot to get back into Windows since I can't ctrl-alt-del in the blackness. Any help…

Installation CD
by Guest Daave- 5 replies

I'm working on a friend's Dell Latitude D610 (Windows XP Pro, SP2 is on the machine and that is what the license is for). There is no installation disk for it handy as far as I know. If I need to perform a repair install (or a clean install for that matter), would I be able to use the Reinstallation CD that came with a Vostro 200? It is a Dell OEM CD for Windows XP Pro w/ SP2.

Major Windows XP Problem
by Guest husky86- 4 replies
This morning I went to turn on my laptop -- Windows XP, Service Pack 3 -- and all I got out of my laptop was 4 loud distinct beeps and then it attempted to restart. It got to the Windows XP screen and then went black. Then nothing. Forcing a restart, I once again get the 4 loud and distinct beeps, but after that all I get is a black screen and it doesn't even proceed to the Windows XP screen. I have never encountered anything like this before. There doesn't seem to be any way that I can start it up in Safe Mode...... is there? Any ideas on what might be going on or how I can even begin to approach this very new situation. All ideas/input would be …

I've never used powertoys before and have in fact just heard about them. Before I even try something though(software-wise), I like to hear others' experiences. So: 1. Any known bugs/difficulties using them? 2. Have they been useful to you? Thanks! Tweak UI This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer settings, taskbar settings, and more. Version 2.10 requires Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003. How to increase Command Prompt's Buffer?
by Guest pg- 7 replies
The other day I was playing with my friends computer running WinXP and was astonished that the Command Prompt on his machine has the buffer that can list up to 3000 lines of past command/message I asked my friend how come his command prompt is so amazing and he said that he downloaded a "patch" or something, some kind of registry tweak, quite a long while ago, and boosted the buffers that the command prompt is using. Unfortunately, he didn't have the "patch" anymore, nor remember where he downloaded that "patch" from. To all the gurus: If you know of such patch (and/or registry tweak), would you kindly share it with me, please? Thank you !!

Is RAID 1 enough?
by Guest Sternkreuzer- 5 replies

I am considering putting RAID 1 on the new machine I am building, with XP Pro. Reading the documentation on the Intel motherboard it seems one needs to do the <F6> tinkering with the BIOS at the very beginning of the installation of XP Pro. I like the RAID 1 concept, but what happens if the motherboard fails? Is there a danger of losing all the data on the mirrored disks after replacing the motherboard? It seems one would have to go through the <F6> procedure again so the motherboard accepts a RAID configuration. Does that force a Clean Install??

I have a text file that 8 numbers per row separated by a space with a carriage return after the last number in the row. How can I insert a carriage return after each number in the text file so I only have 1 number per row. In other words I want to change: 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456123456 To 123456 123456 123456 123456 If there is an other way to do this besides replacing the blank with a carriage return, I am open to it

I recovered some files recently from a drive I couldn't access after a recent upgrade to XP SP3 and when I open the txt file, which I originally wrote in Notepad, the text itself is, well, messed up. Is there anyway to recover the text from these files? A different setting? Maybe a program? Any help is appreciated... thanks!

by Guest heath allyn- 2 replies

SO I think I know what I did to cause this problem (using a third party defragger with a SATA HD without having a hotfix that I didn't know about until I had the problem...see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941715/en) but now every time I try to boot it just says "disk read error" and "press ctrl-alt-del to reboot" The weird thing is that I can mount the HD in an external enclosure and browse all the files. I can get into the recovery console and it sees the installation. I can run chkdsk. I can run a repair install. Nonw of this has worked though, still "disk read error". As a last resort I tried fixboot and fixmbr, but still nothing. I've run severa…

Windows XP Pro - SP 2 Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) This is the code error that I get when I look at the properties of my newly installed DVD burner / reader. This is an USB wired external unit. I got the same message when I purchased an internal model. I took that one back and purchased the USB one - since ALL my USB items work! I've installed / un-installed multiple times, the PC fires up and plug & play "sees" the DVD player using USB, but then it dissapears! The DVD player is powered up, and will except a CD - but just sits there. Windows successfully loaded …
