Strangest problem printing ever...
by Guest Rene Brehmer- 1 reply

And yeah, this turned out be a problem printing, rather than a printer problem. We have 1 machine, that all of a sudden about a month ago, started to act weird: A Dell OptiPlex 170L desktop wit a HP 1200 printer locally on USB. It would print reports from Simply Accounting, but not anything else from Simply. We first thought it was a Simply problem and reconfigured the printer, reinstalled Simply, but it didn't change anything, you hit print, it says it's printing, but job never shows up in spooler. It would still print normally from any other program. Then all of a sudden in the middle of the last payroll, it just stopped being able to print at all. It woul…

Whenever I change anything on my desktop or on my Start Menu, everyone else's desktop or Start Menu is affected also, to the point where it is exactly the same as mine. I know there is a fix for this and I believe a very simple one but for the life of me I can't remember what it is. Can anyone help?

Compressed file too large to open?
by Guest MEH- 2 replies
I had a file with loads of stuff in it. I'm transferring info to a new system so I thought to compress the file using the windows zip feature. When I saw how big the zipped file is, like 498mB, I realized I should have broken it into smaller chunks, discarded every file not needed and try again. Wellll, it won't open because, I'm assuming, it's just too large. Could that be why it won't open? If the zipped file is even larger than my page file set on the system, that would stop it, right? Is there any way I can recover the files in the zip? Stupid, stupid me I deleted the originals because I thought they were safely zipped and ready to go :( Any he…

Cannot remove "Read Only" from folder
by Guest Bob S- 15 replies
I have XP Media Center Edition with SP2 and have a folder which is read only on my C: drive. I want to change the name of the folder, so went to properties of the folder and removed the dot from "Read Only". Unfortunately, it did not seem to stick, since when I tried to rename the folder, it denied access. So, I checked properties again and found that it was Read Only again. How can I remove the "Read Only" attribute? Thanks in advance. Bob

XP Pro fails to activate (MSG 32777)
by Guest Rene Brehmer- 8 replies
We have an old Compaq Presario SR1010NX that came with Windows XP Home. To make it work with our DC I installed Windows XP Pro Upgrade on it, but the Windows Activation fails after that. I tried deleting the installation and installing the Pro Upgrade alone, but it still has the same issue. Internet works though, and I've tried connecting it straight to the router with no change. I cannot connect it straight to the modem because that would require me to take the entire company offline in the process. The error message has # 32777 and says it cannot reach the authentication server. I've tried over several days, and it's still not working. -- Rene Brehmer I…

Down by the Clock
by Guest K- 2 replies

Because my unit startup in Windows XP is frustratingly slow I have been trying to cleanup the few things I know that effect the startup. In the process there is a Quicktime icon in the area of the toolbar next to the clock, I think it is called the system tray. I can right click on the icon and select exit and the icon disappears but at the next startup it's there again. Long ago I have been through the procedure to remove programs from that area of the toolbar but that process escapes me now and so far I have not found any instructions anywhere that address that procedure. I was unable to find anything labeled Quicktime in either Add or Remove Programs or…

Passport problem.
by Guest Sue- 1 reply

I used to use a desktop machine which remains in active use by another family member & have since purchased a laptop loaded with XP. I use MSN LiveMail & MSN Live Messenger. I log on through MSN but also have the most recent version of IE (although I rarely open IE). Of late, when I log on to the laptop, I get a popup message that indicates I'm currently logged on to another computer and can't use Passport. This occasionally causes difficulty posing a new question (or responding to another post) on the Access discussion board. Although when I go to the board I am told I'm logged (as me), I can't log out to try to reenter the discussion board, ei…

Windows Installer Pop-Up Problem
by Guest patetc- 1 reply

I am using Windows XP, SP3 and WMP 11. All are up to date with the most recent updates. Every time I start Windows, the Windows Installer box pops up saying "the feature you are trying to use is in a networ resource that is unavailable". I have to click on cancel numerous times to cancel before it goes away. This also happens when I start WMP but goes away when I close WMP. If I want to view a video file, this is annoying and I have to click multiple times to get rid of it. I don't have any programs waiting to be installed, as far as I know and can't find anything listed either in start-up or services. I don't know what else to check and would apprec…

CAPS Lock problem at Log-in Screen
by Guest Dave Onex- 7 replies

Hi Folks; I'm using Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 3) on my laptop and I have an interesting problem. When I start up and type in my password it fails every time (even though it's correct). CAPS Lock is NOT on. But, if I turn caps lock on and then off and then type in my password it works fine. The correct password is lowercase but unless I cycle the CAPS lock on and then off I can't log-in. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

XP/Vista Networking
by Guest David Schwartz- 3 replies

Hi all. Before I wrote this post I did try and solve the problem myself on the Internet, but I read such a wide assortment of fixes I figured I would go the Newsgroup route before I tried to fix my problem. My problem is what many of you have experienced already. I have a small 3 computer network in my office. All 3 were running XP. One of them died and I got a new computer running Vista (this OS is what NOBODY needed.) I seemed to have networked the new computer. My other XP's see the computer and sees the shared C drive, but when I try and open up Vista's C drive from one of the XP's I get (you all know what I'm going to say): "\Dre-pc\c is not…

QuickLaunch menu
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 0 replies
On this new XP Pro PC I have about the same number (30-35) of QuickLaunch icons configured as I did on my old XP Home PC. A dozen of these are visible in the Taskbar and I display the list of the other score by clicking the >> icon. Normally the list appears immediately, but occasionally it takes 3-5 seconds. Never had that in 5 years on the old (much slower) PC, so I'd appreciate any suggestions on the likely cause and how to fix it please. -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

HP Digital Imaging Monitor - system tray, printer
by Guest Richard Fangnail- 14 replies

I just got a new HP 4180 printer and I wasn't sure if I should have the HP Digital Imaging Monitor startup every time. I did notice that I couldn't scan by pressing a button on the printer - I had to run one of the HP programs that came with the printer. I've Googled a lot of suggestions for how to remove the DIM - can't you just go into Windows Explorer and remove it from the Startup folder? If you could, I should have seen that suggestion a lot, but some of them say to go into MSCONFIG and all that.

I'd be so grateful if anyone can help with this. Last week loaded trial of Norton Ghost 14. After install software promted for a reboot. Did this but system wouldn't load, got a real brief BSOD with error report P: C000021a session manager etc.... Safe mode would not complete. I tried all the standard recovery consol tools, FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, CHKDSK /f/r etc. I performed recommended action in article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307545#top which dealt with BSOD and allowed recovery consol tools to work. Run tools but no result. Safe mode boots up so that black screen appears with safe mode titles and mouse pointer then…

I am now getting this BSOD every time I try to start-up. It occurs a little after the Windows XP black display with the progress 'train' I have changed very little before the error appeared and I think all I had done was update and run antivirus, antispyware, Windows 'housekeeping' programs that I have run many times before. I have had BSOD problems with a DVD drive but this is now disconnected, as are all USB devices. As I cannot start the PC either in Safe Mode I cannot get access to anything to change! Tho' the BSOD from Safe Mode results in 0x0000000A 0xF79B0354 0x000000FF 0x00000001 0x804E5619 I have tried restoring to 'previous working configurat…
