Can't Install Installer Cleanup 1 2
by Guest Mike Hartsough- 28 replies
I've got an application that isn't starting up. The help forums for that App say to uninstall using MS Installer Cleanup utility. I downloaded the MS Installer Cleanup utility, and I now have a file named, "msicuu2.exe" on my PC. When I double-click the file, it starts to install the utility, I'm asked to accept the license agreement, which I do, then I get a dialog box stating, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable". It is looking for a file named, "msicuu.msi". When I click "cancel" (because I don't know where that file might be), I get an error dialog stating, "Error 1714. The older version of Windows Instal…

blue screen of death (BSOD) at boot after malware clean
by Guest Dabbler- 5 replies
My friends was infested with browser hijack and trojans... after Spybot the system boots ok into safe mode but shows BSOD on normal or diagnostic startup. Doesn't have the Dell recovery CD which I was thinking of using for repair install. He does have I386 folder on his hard drive. Any suggestions on how to proceed here? Any help would be appreciated. Note... My Computer/Properties shows the text "VIRUS ALERT!" on the general tab, I've never seen this before and am presuming this is something placed there by a virus to induce a purchase. Thanks! Hello all, I'm trying to settle an argument with someone about the following: Is it possible to take a hard drive out of one system (say a custom built machine) with a fresh Windows XP installation along with my applications, and put it into another system (another custom built machine with different hardware) and boot up normally? My argument is because of the different hardware and internal things specific to the first system, there is no way that it will work in something that has totally different hardware. I remember trying this in Windows 98 long ago, but something about drivers and registry things stopped that thought cold... If I am righ…

Desktop settings
by Guest John- 2 replies
In the grand scheme of things, this isn't a big deal, but it's annoying me: By default, the labels under XP desktop icons use white lettering on a transparent background (i.e., it looks like the letters are just sitting on the wallpaper). Somehow, while trying to do something else, my wife changed the setting so I now have either white or black lettering on a colored background. I can see how to change the color of the background using the Desktop tab of the desktop Properties. But I can't figure out how to get it back to transparent. Can somebody help me or point me to where I can find the trick? Thanks. Reply-to address is real John

When I sign in to this newsgroup foum I check the "remember my user name and password". However, when I need to post a question or to respond to an answer the following day, I always have to sign back in again. When I go back to the sign in area I see that the tick has been removed down to "always remember my name" only. I also always get a "you have been signed out of .net messenger service because you have signed in at another address when I start my computer in the mornings. What is causing this? Thanks. -- Wayne

Saving Complete Program and its Contents for Reinstallation
by Guest RoyRogers- 2 replies

I need to do a complete reinstall of Windows XP. My laptop is running slow and not always responding to commands. It seems that I have to do this about once a year and doing so brings like new performance. HERE is the actual question; for most programs I can just reinstall them from the original supplied disk and continue to use them as always. But some programs also contain my files, like photos, or as in my Paper Port program, information files I don't want to loose. I would like these files or photos to go back to the same headings and titles as before the reinstall so I can search them as I can before removing them and reinstalling the OS program.…

I had my system just the way I wanted it and everything I wanted to do worked. Then I upgraded to SP3. SP3 wouldn't boot and nor would safe mode so I had to "repair" my installation by reinstalling my original SP1 installation disk and installing SP2 over the top of it. Sadly my system is nowhere near the state it was in before. Since SP3 caused this problem and SP3 intransigence in not allowing me to remove it in the usual way has caused a lot of problems that would take me 20 mins to list here ... however A brief list RPC server not working. Now partially fixed DCHP has to be started manually each time I start the machine. NVIDIA driver ins…

Problem with IE7.0 -- or WinXP?
by Guest zoogod- 9 replies
Fresh install of WinXP, all updates. Certain websites (like Google and many others) cause the following "gold bar" message to appear: "This website wants to run the following add-on: MSXML 5.0 from Microsoft Corporation" -- what can I do to prevent this? It asks me to click to install, but I have not done that yet (don't really like the idea of Google or anyother non-MS site, attempting to install software). I have a screen capture, if anyone wants I can post it.

Any opinions on what web mail account is best?
by Guest Big Al- 7 replies

I'm thinking of signing up for something like yahoo or gmail or hotmail. I want an account that is not connected to my ISP obviously that I can use for web based forms / purchases etc. To keep the spam out of my ISP email. I just recently changed ISP's and I'm clear of spam right now and would like to keep it that way. Looking for anyone's opionion on any of these or others. And can any of them be used via outlook / thunderbird rather that strictly via IE.

Downloading stops for no reason ...
by Guest penang@freemail.c3.hu- 16 replies

Downloading used to be an easy job. However, it's getting more and more difficult. Used to be that whenever I download stuffs, where-ever I downloaded it from, downloading itself poses no problem. I could even download an entire CD-ROM ISO content, over 700MB in size, in one shot. Then things started to degrade. First, it was the download from file-sharing services such as MegaUpload or RapidShare that gave me problems. The download just stops in the middle for no apparent reason. At first I thought it was the ADSL modem or port problem. It wasn't. Then I thought it was the ISP throttling bandwidth. It wasn't either. At the time, downloading from pl…

Externally mapping a partition to a folder
by Guest Code_Cruncher- 11 replies

I would like to be able to mount a partition and map it to the "Documents and Settings" folder. Obviously, I cannot do this from Windows, because that would require removing stuff it needs while it is running. So I have two questions: 1. Does Windows need the Documents and Settings folder and the data in it before it mounts and maps the other partitions? (I have a feeling that this is a no; but just in case) And 2. Is there any way I can externally change the mount points from the same computer but on a different OS? For example, are the mount points in a file? If so would I be able to modify them? I just would like to be able to keep all my docume…
