How do I set a default page?
by Guest Vivian H- 8 replies

How do I set a particular page that will come up every time in Word? Right now, I have to click on "C:" then "Documents and Settings" then "vivian" then "My Documents" before I finally get to the page with the list of folders I want to be on. How do I skip all those and get to the page with the list of folders I want to be on right away? Thanks for any help anyone can give me. Vivian

Keyboard doesn't work after update?
by Guest John Favaro- 3 replies
My keyboard has suddenly stopped working. I'm trying to figure out why. One possibility, of course, is that it's broken. But before concluding that, I'd like to explore other possibilities. And one of those other possibilities is that the most recent Windows XP Pro update, just installed this morning (with security updates, malware tool installation, etc.), somehow "broke" it. Here's the info: it is an "old" Logitech wireless iTouch Keyboard. In fact, the original CD came with drivers up to Win2K. But as I said, I've been using it without problems on XP pro all the way up to this morning. One reason I believe that it *might* be a problem with the …

What has priority: PATH from User variables or system variables?
by Guest Sabine Elsner- 0 replies
In WinXP I can setup/change under System->Advanced->Environment Variables the PATH variable in two ways: By changing the entry under "user variables" and under "system variables". Until now I thought that the "User variables" settings have priority over the system variables. So the sequence of PATHs I expected was PATH=%PATH%(from user variable;%PATH%(from system variable) But as I had to notice this is NOT the case! When I type "set" at the command prompt then the system variable PATH come BEFORE user variable PATH. Is there a way to change the sequence? Sabine

RE: "All Users" Desktop

RE: "All Users" Desktop Hi there isn't a group policy that will put a shortcut in the all users folder but you can run a script to run a script at logon to place a shortcut on the users desktop. The following site provides a good example of a vb script that does the job, just replace the variables appropriately: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=9023 -- James Yeomans, BSc, MCSE "Mark" wrote: > I have a Windows 2003 Server running AD, and about 50 Windows XP > workstations. Defender
by Guest joseph- 2 replies

Windows Defender suddenly put an Icon near the Clock. It had an exclamation mark. It asked to upgrade, but there were no upgrades. (It seemed to happen when there was an automatic Update for Windows) I turned Defender off to see if it would go away. Now I cannot find where to turn it back on to see if the exclamation went away. looked in Ctrl Panel , Security and Firewall. Can you believe the Help Index does not have Defender listed!?

Troubleshooting chronic DDE slowness
by Guest ajkessel- 0 replies
I've posted a similar question here before, and seen the same question posed elsewhere, with no useful responses, so I'm trying again. Running fully patched, up to date, virus-proof and adware-proof, etc., Windows XP SP3, Office 2007. Often DDE-enabled file types open slowly. For example, if http links are set to open with DDE, it might take 5-10 seconds for the link to appear in the browser; if DDE is disabled, it opens instantly. The machine has plenty of resources: Thinkpad x61; Dual core 2.0 GHz CPU; 4 GB RAM; relative recent fresh installation; no extra services etc.. I've disabled the Network DDE service, which is the one suggestion I've seen out …

Question about Ad-Aware program
by Guest Molly in AL- 2 replies
After a recent problem with my computer, I think (from some informative replies) that some of my problem came from using Ad-Aware incorrectly. I thought the program automatically quarantined critical files before deleting, but that's apparently not true. Is that correct? Also, if it finds critical objects whose files begin win WIN, does that automatically mean they're system files? If I quarantine instead of delete these files, will it solve the problems they've created? Or can Ad-Aware actually clean up these files? Thanks for any information! :)

No desktop icons at all!
by Guest msliny@optonline.net- 3 replies

I'm trying to help a friend here. When her computer starts up, the desktop background shows, the taskbar shows and the quick launch bar shows. However, NO icons appear on the desktop at all (not even My Computer or Recycle Bin). There are no viruses or spyware present. I am not a novice, but I cannot figure this one out. This a Dell Dimension 3000, running WinXP Pro, SP3. The warranty has expired. I'm sure it must be a registry entry, but I am NOT sure which one(s). This is not a new problem, though I'm not sure when it began. She insists it was always this way. I've tried to set up a new folder and/ or shortcut and it goest though the whole process, yet …

1317 Error when trying to reinstall .Net Framework
by Guest Craig- 4 replies

Hi, I've posted this message in another thread, but it appears to have stumped the folks overseeing that one. So I am appealing to anyone who can help. I've been having problems with my McAfee virus protection and firewall... they don't work... OUCH. The problems have been traced to MSXML and .Net Framework. Both have ceased responding. Some real good links were given to me previously and I followed the ones I could comprehend. But they have led me to an extension of my problem which is where I'm stumped. After identifying the .NET Framework installs I had and then using a removal tool recommended by one of the links I attempted to reinstall the sam…

In a folder, R-Click: New: WordPerfect 12 Doc produces a 0-byte file
by Guest John Hupp- 3 replies
I'll begin by noting that this seems like a Windows problem rather than a WordPerfect problem, since a complete uninstall/reinstall of WordPerfect with Registry scrubbing and manual deletion of program file locations (in Program Files and <user profile>\Application Data) did not solve the problem. Also, I do not have the problem with Quattro Pro (another app in the WordPerfect suite). To the problem: In a folder, if I Right-Click: New: WordPerfect 12 Document, a 0-byte file is created (New WordPerfect Document.wpd). If I then try to open that file - without WordPerfect running - by double-clicking on it, I get a WordPerfect error: The …

Right click the folder you want to create the file in and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check for permissions for the folder." When I attempt to save the .wav file in My Documents I get a similar messsage that the attachment can not be saved and to right click on the shortcut menu a…

I have the shortcut on my desktop; the file, when I input the shortcut, such as Alt+Shift+Z, is supposed to "sign" my name whenever I type the shortcut. Safeboot bluescreen problem!!!!
by Guest Digit4lPimp- 1 reply

HI I have recently had a virus/malware problem. I have found a lot of stuff that I have removed but I couldn't boot in safe mode to run any of the anti spy/malware programs due to a constant bluescreen error after pressing F8. I read that using msconfig to boot in safe mode may work so I tried it! I ticked the Safeboot option and rebooted but now (of course) I still get the blue screen and now can't even get into windows. The bluescreen message is along the line of... A problem has been detected... ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78BE524, 0x0000034, 0x000000000, 0x000000000) Does anyone have any suggestions? Exceptions in Firewall
by Guest joseph- 4 replies

In Control Panel / Windows Firewall / Exceptions ; I am suspicious of the some of the programs that are Enabled. Some have names like Remote Assistant, Network Diagnostics for W XP, and Windows Live Messneger. There are 9 at the top of the list that DO NOT have names which worry me? There is a box with a check mark in and just the word 'ENABLE',,, no name of a Program. When I click on Edit they have names which I will now Copy. I don't know about enabling these places to have access to my PC, whether they are important for operation or some type of intrusion. (Remember the only name they have is 'ENABLE" and they are checked, I don't ever remember allowi…

Blue Screen Crash
by Guest GRV- 1 reply

Hi the computer running XP Home has crashed stating "The video driver failed to initialise" and no amount of attempting safe mode or any other access works. The computer was store bought and didn't come with a recovery disk and none was made since. There is no trace of the XP home disk that came with it but I do have a brand new XP Pro disk and license that I was going to use in a new PC I was hoping to try and build just for the experience. My question is, if I install Windows XP using the "boot from CD option" will I lose the data such as photographs etc. already on the computer or will it just upgrade the operating system?

Remote logins using 2x XP Pro, 1x XP home, 1x Vista home premium

Hello The situation: I maintain an office, where they now got a computer with Vista. There are 4 computers, all connected via lan and the idea is that all documents are shared to everyone. There are 2 computers with XP Professional, one with XP Home and now one with Vista Home Premium. Sharing works in all cases, all computers can access "my documents" on all other computer (though on Vista I renamed the Documents folder for the sake of the standard. There are 3 minor issues with the system. The XP Pro are the best working computers. 1) XP Home cannot remember passwords for logging in to other computers. Is this specific for "home"? Professional has it…
