Re: How to Disable "Access Denied" Hi Shenan, Sorry for the late response. You might have a point regarding the flash drive, but I was able to go there and see content. As a mater of security, it is possible his system will not allow me to copy anything from his HDD to that drive. Since that time, I managed to download AVG on my dial-up computer. rconsole/rclient error on XP-64
by Guest Mike_g- 1 reply

We have some XP 64-bit SP2 systems that we cannot connect to with rclient. This is the result: C:\NTRESKIT\rconsole>rclient \\xp64cpu Initializing ... Authentication ... The server rejected the connection. The system cannot find the file specified. If we try and reinstall the service we get the following Event id 7000: The Remote Console service failed to start due to the following error: "System cannot find the file specified" The process has worked fine for years on XP 32-bit. Anyone have any ideas about how to resolve this?

Missing hal.dll problem - lock-up, DOS type screen
by Guest Tomcat71- 0 replies

hello - ran across some commentary about hal.dll driver problem, OS requesting replacement in system32 file, etc, just as I had same problem, trying to find solution. this is what happened to me. I too was cleaning old files, programs, many deletions, and ran right in to this lock-up/problem on re-boot. I think what happened to me is this - I deleted one file I thought was old, not used, and seemed to be empty. (I am on Win XP) NEVER delete it. or try to, as it will not delete by normal process. it is “xerox”, on C drive, Windows. as I learned later, it came with original windows OS setup and apparently is tied to this hal driver. I have a utility “k…

by Guest Erwin Moller- 3 replies

Hi group, A few weeks back we had an ADSL outage. I setted up a temporarely wireless connection and shared it with others in the office. Now our ADSL is up again, but I cannot get rid of the this connection. I just want to use my good old Lan direct connection to the gateway. But I cannot remove the 'internet gateway'/'internet connection'. AT the moment I have 3 other connections listed under "Wireless or high speed Internet": 1) Wireless connection (which is disabled) 2) Local Area Network (enabled) 3) 1394 connection (disabled) I check all three above via properties and made sure (under Advacnced tab) that the checkbox is NOT checked. Check…

Start Menu Trouble
by Guest fewiii- 5 replies

Hello from frustrationland... My problem: I can access my Start Menu, but can't do much else with it - I have to go into Windows Explorer. I get no context menus, etc, (including My Documents, My Music, etc. and the stuff in All Programs). Then, for the coup de grace, when I try to 'pin' apps to the Start Menu, I get a good-ol' Data Execution Prevention error message whenever I open the start menu after doing so; then, Dr. Watson does its thing, and explorer.exe restarts. As it turns out, the apps actually 'pin' okay, and work, but I can't move them or anything else, including getting any context menus (like with the rest of the Start Menu. And I c…

WMI Perf.SystemUpTime returns error 0x80041010
by Guest Michal Kopl- 0 replies
WXP Pro SP2, somehow the WMI subsystem has been corrupted, as some of our vbs scripts that are functional on same image of the system does not return expected results here. The script was using WMI to get information about the uptime of the system. User had simmilar problem in another script checking the free space on his hard drives, but these were fixed by simply reregistering of the module. Unfortunatelly in cas of uptime this did not helped. I have even made a rebuild of repository, and run the same script - this time I have received error 0x80041010. I have advised him to try the instructions posted here http://miken32.livejournal.com/3653.html ,…

Repair install - not reading files properly
by Guest JMB- 2 replies

I had a problem with blank Device Manager after running SP3 on my desktop. I was given various suggestions on fixing this by MSoft but eventually came to a Repair Install then Clean Install if that did not work. I did the Repair Install and all went well until it was reading in the various xxxxxx.dl_ files from the CD-ROM. It kept failing to open these. I used BROWSE and could see them on the CD-ROM but it would not open the file. I tried the other CD drive but was the same. I eventually found the same file on the C:\WINDOWS folder manually and used that to keep the install going even though they might be the wrong version. It worked in a fashion …

All, I posted this in IE, but no one has replied: Performing a manual install, I need to eliminate the IE 7 initial configuration and settings popup for each User the 1st time they launch IE7 after it's already been installed. Is there a setting after the initial install to avoid the initial configuration and settings popup for other Users on the PC so the initial configuration and settings from the install hold for All Users? Thank you, John

Getting Rid of Icons in Task Bar
by Guest chalkduster0- 4 replies
When I boot up my computer, 20 icons appear in the task bar. While I'm not a computer techie, I suspect that the more icons there are in the task bar the longer it will take to boot up, which is what I'm experiencing. Most of those icons are ones that I don't use on a regular basis, so can I get rid of the icons I dont' use, and if so, how? Thanks for the help. chalkduster0

Blank Script Errors ... Please help
by Guest - G -- 9 replies

I'm having issues with Script errors. I tried deleting the account and files and made sure that Documents and Settings didn't have that user anymore. However, when I created a new account, the errors didn't disappear. When I tried to set a password and opened Users from Control Panel, even that User window showed script errors. When the window opens so I can check the script error, everything is blank, Line, Error, etc. I noticed this when I was browsing Overstock.com. When I click on Search(red button), the yellow triangle appears in the bottom left. And when I click on the triangle, the window opens up and there is nothing listed in the window. I might h…

Does Windows Include the Jet Components?
by Guest TC- 10 replies
I'm looking for a straight answer to this question: Does Windows include the Jet components? I've found it very difficult to get an answer. On one hand, Windows includes MDAC, but MDAC no longer includes Jet (http:// support.microsoft.com/kb/271908). On the other hand, I've been told that, despite the change to MDAC, anyone with an up-to-date version of Windows should automatically have Jet (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/ 239114). The wording of the Microsoft articles is poor, so I just don't know. Can anyone give me a definitive yes or no? For Windows XP, at least? -TC

Search Not Working
by Guest LDN- 4 replies
Background: I did a restore to a previous restore point to try and fix a font install issue which seemed to work OK. Since then I can’t use the search option in XP. I am running XP Professional SP2. Issue: So when I click on the (magnifying glass / search icon) on any file folder the search companion window starts to open and then just hangs. I have tried to do different restore points, but nothing seems to make a difference. Question: Is there a way to do a Windows OS re-install so that I can keep all of my programs as is, while fixing this issue? Better solution? Thanks LDN

Re-loading XP
by Guest peeaytch- 7 replies

I've had to re-load XP a couple times over the past few years due to virus/spyware problems I couln't resolve. My question is, does doing this erase all errors on the drive and or registry? I ask because after my latest re-install, I was getting pop-ups telling me that my registry was corrupt, and that I should visit such-and-such website to correct it. This happened while trying to re-load DSL software from a CD. Is there a fix or is this PC doomed? Would a new hard drive take care of this? Any help is appreciated.

error message keeps poping up
by Guest ijerome- 2 replies

I recently installed Firefox. When I click on a link, an error message pops up: >windows cannot find xxxxxxxxxxx.xxxx. type in the correct address again.< It immediately goes to firefox and the link. However if I don't go back and x out the error message it does not let me open another link. There is about a 1 second message and then it immediately goes to the link. The error message stays in the background until I close it. Seems like windows is trying to open link, can't find it, and then Firefox gets it and goes. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Icon size on Links Bar
by Guest slick1- 0 replies

On the top of my screen I have a Links Bar, along with the Menu, Address & Windows Live Tool Bar. I know I can select either large or small icons by clicking on an empty space on the tool bars, but the problem is that when I select small icons, the Links Bar icons do not change, all the other bars icons change ok. Is there a separate setting somewhere to make the Links icons smaller? System: Acer TravelMate 2450 Windows XP , Home Edition, SP3 Explorer 7 Thanks!!
