Windows update OK?
by Guest Jo-Anne Naples- 12 replies

For several years I never updated Windows on my XP Home computer. A couple weeks ago I had SP3 installed, and today is the first time since then that Windows wants to update. I had asked for notification of updates, and I went to the update website to see what was there. Following is what I found. Does this appear to be something I should go ahead with? (I won't keep asking this question, but I'm still nervous about what to allow right away and what to hang back on.) <<Update for Windows XP (KB898461) 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install) This update installs a permanent copy of Package Installer for Windows to enable software updates…

How do I open WIndows Mixer?
by Guest randwill- 10 replies
I am trying to record some old vinyl records using a USB turntable and software called Cakewalk Pyro. It works okay but some records top out too loud. Supposedly I can adjust the recording volume using Windows Mixer. When I click on "Open Windows Mixer" from within Pyro I get the message: "There is a problem with your sound hardware. To install mixer devices go to Control Panels, click Printers and Other Hardware and click Add Hardware." Since I'm not trying to add any new hardware, only open Windows Mixer, I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

I recently installed a third party package which "encountered a problem and needed to close" during the installation. Following a re-boot I can no longer uninstall software, copy and paste items on my hard drive or to outside drives, I have no network connection tools, system restore won't function, even in safe mode from the command line. I can't use backup or restore either. This happened once before and I had to re-install everything from scratch and I deperately don't want to have to do that again. Help, Please.

I now that this is an old one but I cannot find the work around anywhere. I want to change the way that Windows Explorer lists file names that have numbers in them. i.e. from file1.jpg; file10.jpg; file11.pg; file2.jpg; file20.jpg; etc. to file1.jpg; file2.jpg; file3.jpg; file10.jpg; file11.jpg etc. I remember finding an instruction on changing a value in regedit to accomplish this, but it was quite a few years back and I canot remember what it was. Any help would be appreciated, regards

Hi all, I am in hopes that someone can help me with this problem. I dual boot with Vista and XP on two of my 4 machines, I have found the workaround information for hiding the Vista drive from XP do that it won't delete the Restore Points, or so it says, and I have a situation I am not sure how to resolve. Here is the workaround in the KB article: To keep Windows XP from deleting restore points of the volume in Windows Vista, add the following registry entry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\Offline registry subkey in Windows XP: Value name: \DosDevices\D: Type: REG_DWORD Value data: 1 Note If the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDev…

before installing sp3 should I do it on a clean sp2 setup?
by Guest Patrick Pierson- 3 replies

Whenever I install my spsp2 disc I always do a lot of minor changes to make it work the the I want it to. Is it better to go ahead and do that before I insall sp3 or should I install sp2 and then immediately install sp3 and then do the changes? We are talking about minor stuff here like the way folders appear and the colors and all those sorts of things. Also I just installed sp3 on another machine and noticed I have two items listem under HKLM runonce but the just stay there. Does that mean they will run every time, is something wrong or should I just ignore it. They are netfxupudate v 1.1. 4322 and srepostpone part of my zone alarm software. Ever…

RE: Default Picture Software Every time I work with an image the program makes a copy. When I try to delete the copies I get another copy. My folders are fat with copies. How do I fix this problem? Several years ago I did turn on the 'make copies' feature in Word but turned it off. I have 2 My Pictures on the computer - the 2nd was made after a back door virus was cleaned out of the computer several years ago. I don't use the original My Phictures and place the images in the newer My Pictures.

Dual Disk SATA 1 2
by Guest Spin- 26 replies

Gurus, On a machine with two SATA drives, is there any performance gain by running applications off of the second SATA disk? I understand that SATA is serial in-line technology, that being said, if all the reads and writes have to come through the same controller, then perhaps running applications off of the second SATA disk might actually result in a DECREASE in total system performance? -- Spin

by Guest Discoduck- 19 replies

x-no-archive: I read a terrific idea, online. That is after reformatting your hard drive, reinstall XP, and after it is finished updating the operating system, CREATE an IMAGE of your hard drive so that the next time you do this, it sint NEARLY as long a process. Excellent idea. But it did not elaborate on HOW to do this. How would you do this?

I think I've transferred all the files I want from the old computer to the new one, but just to be safe, I'd like to save a copy of the data on the old computer in case I missed something important. If I back up using XP backup, will I be able to restore using anything that comes with Vista?

Windows XP performance issue
by Guest Jasper Recto- 13 replies

I have a Dell 5150 box that used to have Windows 2000 on it. I recently upgraded to Windows XP and noticed that downloading files from our server is extremly slow. a 2MB file takes about 5 minutes to download to the computer. However, if we upload the 2MB file to the server, it works great. What could be going wrong. When the computer was Windows 2000 we had no speed problems. As soon as we switched the OS, it's very slow. I tried changing the speed and duplex settings on the computer and switch but no combination worked. I even replace the network card and nothing. Any ideas? Thanks, Jasper
