Issues with Excel 2003 after installing WinXP sp3
by Guest jamoldover- 8 replies
After I updated my copy of WinXP Pro with sp3, I began experiencing a series of problems that seem to be related to running Excel, in that they only occur when Excel is open. These problems include: delayed screen refreshes, slower performance, occasional system freezes, particularly when trying to copy information from one spreadsheet to another, etc. In short, the system is acting like it has a "memory leak". However, using the Task Manager to monitor active processes and resources doesn't show any problems, and seems to show everything running normally. Specs of the system are as follows: CPU: Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz RAM: 2048 MB OS: XP Professional…

Trying to recall where a checksum setting is
by Guest Pete Puma- 3 replies
Once in XP I came across a setting that allowed the data copied or written to be "checked" or verified something like that in some general preference box. Even at the risk of slowing down any copying function, I would prefer this. Can any one help me with this--sorry to be so vague... 1) I was trying to remember where it was 2) I wondered how it was performing the parity check--but I guess it was doing checksums of some type Thanks for reading

Generic Host Process needs to close
by Guest mathsgames- 0 replies
Win XP Home Edition SP1. Every time I go online via ASDL broadband I get at least one "Generic Host Process .........and needs to close". The Event log has nothing in the App or the module entries. The error occurs usually during the first five minutes of online time. I have found that the controlling Windows process allows me about 30 secs to write my last will and testament before pulling out the rug. Also found (reboots were hugely annoying) that if I can log-off and close just AOL BEFORE about 30 secs, and then click the "Don't Send" option on the warning window, all I have to do to recover is restart AOL thus avoiding a cold restart. As for wha…

I keep getting this annoying message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive F: I then get a message to continue, Try Again, cancel." This has to do when I download a song from Itunes and then try to sync my Ipod. This has been occuring for sometime now if I click on Try again about 5 times it works. Note this only occurs during the sync when I have purchased new songs or books once they are downloaded I have no problem. I have uninstalled Itunes, Restored Ipod, saw some information on Quck Time and have Cleared the History and changed the drive letter and still no sucess anybody have any ideas? Thank-you!

I want to get rid of stuff that I think is intrusive on my XP mahhine. For example, NETMEETING. I don't need it, I don't want it. When I go to control panel> add/remove software > Netmeeting does not show up. Can't find it in add/remove Windows components either. when I go to the sub directory for Netmeeting and just delete the files, they reappear as fast as I can de;ete them. what is the Windows process that causes this? How do I get rid of Microsoft file I don't want?

file locked

Ciao, in my notebook XPprofessional sp2, I have recently observed a locked file in c/windows/temp with the name "hlktmp" (without extension). Sometime it has a size of 0kb and sometimes 8Mb.. According the program Unlocker it should be related to the System process (?). Do you have any idea about it? Is it a normal system file or not? Scans with both F-secure and "Spybot search & destroy" do not find any malware.. Thank you in advance for your help

Hi, I replaced my old file server (Windows 2000 Pro Desktop!) by a SBS2003 R2. I moved all data to the new SBS2003 server and created identical shares, removed shares from old Win2K file serer and turned it off. Now, on a WinXP Pro desktop when starting Windows Explorer or IE6, I get annoying delays. The network tray icon reveils a delay of several seconds before network traffic takes place. Then files / sites show up quickly rightafter. When the old file server is powered up (still connected to network), the delays are gone. I suspect the WinXP desktop still uses links to the old file server but have no clue where to look. Q1. What can I do to…

Any deas what this might be? In case it is relevent, my recent installation of NAV 2008 has failed and Symantec have been unable to repair it and have removed it. Maybe this affected things? I must str3ss that I am not very expert onthese matters!

As you probably know, Geek Squad is owned by Best Buy and operates right out of their stores. So, it is reasonable to assume that Best Buy sets the tone for how Geek Squad operates (except for the influence that Microsoft's $200,000,000 cash infusion gives them, of course). Seeing as how the tone for the overall Best Buy/Geek Squad operations are set by Best Buy, it would behoove people to take note as to how Best Buy treats its customers before using the services of Geek Squad. As reported on CNET (http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9947410-7.html?tag=nefd.top), Best Buy has been selling customers old ANALOG (that means the TVs are not ready for the …

how to interpret poolmon output, 'Proc' tag.
by Guest Samuel Stanojevic- 21 replies
Hi, I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2, up-to-date with Windows Updates. I've recently noticed that my non-paged kernel memory is leaking at a steady pace of 10Mb+/day. If I don't reboot my machine every few days, it eventually and inevitably grinds to a halt, forcing me to reboot it. By searching on the web, I realized I needed to run poolmon.exe to debug the leak, which I did. The output of poolmon clearly shows that the leaking tag is 'Proc'. But what is 'Proc'? I have no idea. Can someone please explain to me what the 'Proc' tag means, and how I can use that information to track down the cause of the leak? Thanks! Sam

sfc /scannow file replacement log? (in XP, not Vista)
by Guest Bill in Co.- 11 replies

Can someone please tell me where a LOG file of the actual files that are being replaced or updated is? I know Event Viewer will indicate that some files were replaced as an event, but I want to know specifically which dll files (or whatever) are being replaced in case there are some problems with some specific programs and I need to restore the previous version. As I recall (but I may be recalling incorrectly), Event Viewer will not have that information, much less be able to save it in a log.

Problems with Wide Screen Monitor and XP
by Guest NoName- 10 replies

I have an E-machine with an NVidia graphics chip set (6100, I think, but I'm not sure of that -- not sitting in front of that machine right now). I also just purchased the Dell E228WFP 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor, my first wide screen monitor, which has a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050 at 60 Hz. I don't want to use the maximum resolution mode because (1) the fonts are too small, and (2) I think there is some flicker, even though I thought the flat panel monitors are not supposed to have the flicker issues associated with the older CRTs. Either way, I tried to set the monitor to a lower resolution mode (like 1024 x 768), only to discover that t…

Mysterious Mobile Device that won't go away
by Guest gbdub- 3 replies

In My Computer, I have an icon for a "Mobile Device" that is completely empty. It's details call it a "system folder". I have no mobile devices plugged into my machine. When clicking on the mobile device icon, I don't get the usual option of ejecting or "safely removing" the device. I can't find any way to get rid of this icon. Additionally, since this icon appeared, my digital camera no longer shows up as a USB drive when I plug it in - the computer plays the sound that indicates something has been plugged in, but neither an icon for the camera in My Computer nor the importation wizard show up. I can't find any way to access the content on the camera. …
