Start menu items don't work
by Guest jayjay- 3 replies
I've looked at many many threads trying to figure this one out. When clicking on Control Panel, Search, My Documents, My Computer in the Start Menu they won't open. My desktop icons go off for about 2 seconds, the hourglass comes up and the program doesn't start. Some of the programs on my desktop won't open when I click on the desktop shortcut. Also, when I put a cd or hook up my mp3 player the window comes up asking what I want to do. If I click Open a Window to show files, nothing happens. If I log out of my identity and log into a guest identity, the items under the Start Menu open up just fine. Any ideas why this is happening? -- jayjay

autologon problem
by Guest Jo-Anne Naples- 15 replies
Yesterday, I set up autologon using TweakUI on my Windows XP computer (with SP3 installed) to avoid having to click on my name each time I boot up. It worked when I restarted the computer yesterday--but not today. I looked at the autologon dialog box in TweakUI today, and autologon is unchecked again. Could the problem be that I didn't choose a password? (After the autologon box is checked, the "set password" button appears.) If that's the case, is there anything I can do short of choosing a password? I work alone; and if someone steals my computer, having a password will probably not stop the person from accessing my files (or so I've been told). And I d…

second monitor displays image sideways
by Guest Mindy- 4 replies
I have a second monitor (Dell) that my display is extended to. Has always worked fine. I leaned over the keyboard and must have hit some random combination of keys and now the image is rotated 90 degrees on the monitor. have tried shutting down, restarting, unplugging, turning on and off the display....nothing works. I'm certain it's a windows problem as the display is still fine with another computer. Have gone into display settings and the icon for the 2nd monitor is now a tall rectangle instead of a long one. Can't figure out how to get it back to the original configuration. Help and thanks!

Remote Desktop problem after installing XP service Pack 3
by Guest amadrid- 0 replies
After I installed SP3 when I attempt to connect to a remote computer I get a message that says: *The publisher of this remote computer cannot be identified*. I also get a dialogue box for Remote Desktop Connection that says: *Remote Desktop Connection has encountered a problem and must shut down. Its the standard MS error box that allows you to submit the error or cancel.* If I leave this box open and move it, then I can connect to and control the remote desktop. If I close the dialogue box then the remote desktop session freezes and I have to kill it in task manager any ideas? -- amadrid

empty space
by Guest marx404- 8 replies
Looking at my defrag program (VoptXP) it shows that I have some considerable empty disk space between where my files end and where the MFT begins, then after the MFT, more empty space. I know it would optimize my HD by moving the MFT up and have all the empty space at the end of the drive. I want to move the MFT up to where the files end so that the empty space on my drive is all consolidated. How can this be accomplished? TIA. -- marx404 _________________

Windows Update doesn't see some updates post-SP3
by Guest Craig- 1 reply

Greetings, Prior to downloading and installing Win XP SP3 on two WinXP Home machines, a Custom Windows Update let me know that I could choose to install .NET Framework 1.1, 3 (and maybe 3.5), as well as letting me know that my current ..NET Framework 2 had a Service Pack available--the one that was issued several months ago. After installing SP3, when I do a Custom (or for that matter, an Express) Windows Update, I'm still told that .NET Framework 1.1 is available to install, but I'm no longer told that the .NET Framework v2 Service Pack is available and I'm not told that I could download and install .NET Framework 3 or 3.5. This is true for two …

IE7/OE6 Hung App Problem
by Guest News- 1 reply
From time to time IE7 and OE6 freeze and when I cntl, alt, del I get a message that I have a hung app and it's caused by iexplorer.exe or msimn.exe.mdmp. I can run sfc scannow and it fixes the problem plus makes IE and OE run faster. Also sfc always asks for the XP disk to replace some protected system files. XP Prof SP2 has been running for 9 months without this problem.IE6 seems to run OK too. I have repaired IE7 many times with no joy,the problem re-occurs. Any ideas/help is certainly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

XP Doesn't Recognize Camera, etc.
by Guest K- 2 replies

The morning after a storm a couple weeks ago my unit wouldn't start and showed a message explaining something about a missing registry entry. The CompuDoc came in but couldn't restore the missing registry entry so he wiped the disc and reinstalled most everything. All went well except the first time I tried to download pics from my camera. The unit no longer recognized my camera when I pluged it in. When I called the CompuDoc, we discovered he failed to turn on one of the necessary drivers. He talked me thru that but it didn't help the camers situ. Since then I've discovered when I select Save As then click My Computer it takes 30 seconds of searching to f…

system32 file mess
by Guest Doug W.- 2 replies

Three weeks ago, and after a half dozen attempts to install XP SP3 using different scenarios and subsequent crashes on re-boot and BEFORE I found out about the screw-up with the intelppm.sys in regard to AMD 64 Athlon, a whole raft of system files were left in windows/system32 folder with appended (2),(3),(4),(5),(6) as well as the correct one with the new version number that SP3 called for. Some were as (3) to (7) consecutively appended. This left many, many useless executables and .dlls which take up a lot of space and are unnecessary. As far as I have checked all of the appended files have the OLD version number (pre SP3). - example: lsass(2).exe l…

Sound stopped working
by Guest Lori- 2 replies

This is for my aunt's computer. She out of nowhere has had her sound stop working in her machine. We have tried to disconnect and reconnect her speakers and you hear the crackle like there is sound, but nothing comes through that should. Of course it has been rebooted. Don't know where to go since I operate on Windows XP and it's been a long time since I've been on 98. Does anyone have any suggestions, please, as to how to troubleshoot this? Thank you very much.

Bad hardware
by Guest Parker Race- 7 replies

The family XP SP2 machine started acting strangely last week. The screen would go black and then refresh occasionally. The OE Express started crashing, then IE7. It got so bad with spontaneous reboots that I downloaded and attempted to install SP3, that failed with a message that it can't verify Update.inf (are the cryptograhy services running?, yes they are). So I attempted to a repair with a SP2 CD. It fails after hardware detection. I have Acronis backups on a second drive so I booted off an Acronis boot cd, verfication of the archive passes but any attempt to restore fails immediately. The system drive doesn't appear to be trashed. I can browse it looking for…

I want to be able to use the printer I have connected to my desktop to be able to print when using my laptop. I think I have things set up correctly on the desktop, but can't seem to get it working on the laptop. (I have provided a 'Share Name' as directed while setting up in the desktop pc. Once at the laptop I am stuck where it says to "Select Browser for a printer". I do not show any printers in the list, so I know I am doing something wrong, but don't know what. If I go into the Printer/Fax Folder I do not see a printer there either. Did I miss a step? Really could use some help please. Both machines are XP, desktop is running KIS 7.0 (with KIS f…

"Show Desktop" Shortcut Doesn't Work
by Guest Skippybox- 2 replies
My "Show Desktop" shortcut/button on the Quick Launch toolbar on the Taskbar no longer works. This is one of the default buttons provided with the Quick Launch toolbar. The shortcut icon has changed to a generic one and the Properties reflect that it is now a SimTowns Sounds type of file. I believe the file is intact, since in Notepad the functionality appears to still be there. I just think that the file thinks it's a SimTown Sounds file. The file has a .scf extension, so maybe SimTown is simultaneously using this Windows extension. However, in the registered file types list, no .scf extension exists for either Windows or SimTown. I don't have Si…

Riprepped SP3 images suffer the continuous reboot problem
by Guest Nick Payne- 1 reply

I created an XP install point with SP3 integrated, created a flat RIS image from the install point, and can RIS build workstations from that no problem. I can build a workstation from one of our customised XP SP2 Riprep images, install SP3 on the workstation, either manually or via WSUS, and it works fine. However, if I use Riprep on one of the workstations that has been upgraded to SP3 to create a customised image, and then try to install this image back onto the same workstation, the image copies down to the workstation ok, but at the first reboot after the files have been copied, the workstation cold boots a couple of seconds after the Windows XP sp…

Bad Media Center 2005 Reinstall
by Guest Churchy LaFemme- 2 replies
I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows MCE 2005 on my Dell XPS 400, using the reinstallation DVD. However, there are now two problems. One, there is no sound, even though Device Manager shows "audio codecs." Second, an attached ethernet cable is not recognized, and Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark (no driver) for "Ethernet Controller," as well as for PCI Device, PCI Simple Communications Controller, SM Bus Controller, Unknown Device, and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). So I cannot connect to my router and get online. Any help will be appreciated.

Error When Printing
by Guest Jason- 0 replies

When I try to print from most basic Windows programs, I receive the following message: <NAME OF PROGRAM> has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Then, another error appears: The instruction at "0x5f801088" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read". This happens only when I use some basic Windows XP programs: -Microsoft Paint -Microsoft Notepad -Microsoft Word 2007 (and all other Office programs) It does not happen with the following programs: -Internet Explorer 7 -Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Also, with the programs in which it happens in (e.g., Microsoft Paint), I can pri…
