Question re Repair Install
by Guest Walter R.- 10 replies

After several years of running smoothly, I have a lot of little kinks on my XPSP2 system. In order to get a clean installation, I would like to run a repair install. I know how to do it. Should I disable my (Avast) Anti virus resident scanner before running the repair? Thanks -- Walter http://www.rationality.net -

Delay selecting items in Explorer on external drive
by Guest Rubicon- 0 replies
When clicking on any item - folder or file - in Windows Explorer for a USB2 external drive, there is a four/five second delay till that item gets highlighted. Happens every time only for one particular external drive. During that time everything is frozen. Except for this delay everything works fine. Do we need to look out for anything? Drive tested free of malware and viruses. Regards and thanks for any insights. Rubicon ---------

Windows logon screen
by Guest Tigger- 2 replies
I have an issue with the logon screen on my Windows XP Home edition. I recently format my hard drive and reinstall XP. Since then, whenever I logout of windows and then try to login again, the cursor is not available. It only shows the arrow and not the cursor when I try to click on the password logon box. It will be fine after I restart the computer and then I was able to type my password. But then it will happen again when I logout and try to log back in again. What might be the issue how can it be resolved?

Service Pack 3 Issue
by Guest Hal Kingsley- 5 replies
I hope someone out there can help. Service pack 3 was just installed on my laptop, since then I cannot modify the Windows Firewall. I have administrator privlidges. Programs such as Active-synch are now not able to work. Windows Firewall has now blocked me from many of my standard programs. All since the install. When going into the firewall, there is a statement that says, "Firewall is governed by group policies." Where can I go to either turn off the firewall or modify it? It is all currently grayed out. Once again, I have the admin username and password and this does not help. Thanks.

Check out http://www.pctools.com/news/view/id/206/ It reads in part "Ironically, the new operating system has been hailed by Microsoft as the most secure version of Windows to date. However, recent research conducted with statistics from over 1.4 million computers within the ThreatFire community has shown that Windows Vista is more susceptible to malware than the eight year old Windows 2000 operating system, and only 37% more secure than Windows XP," Clausen said. How does Wordpad "read" font Code page 437? (CP437, OEM font)
by Guest Doug Bashford- 3 replies

How does wordpad "read" font Code page 437? (CP437, OEM font) I copied and pasted some of the box drawing characters, and mathematical symbols from the below URL into Wordpad, and it worked! Saved, still ok. I thought this old "font" had been lost. How do they do that? I also changed the font to arial, Courier new, Times New Roman, Webdings, and others, and they still showed as box drawing characters, etc, (but they showed as these named fonts in Wordpad). In short, they kinda act like the old MSDOS machines or MS-DOS edit. Normally in Win, the high bit ASCII characters do NOT show the CP437 "font". For example, character 186 in Win looks…

Can you please help me. I have Windows XP in my HP Pavillion a422n (Pentium 1V). When I turned on computer there was a message on the screen that said:"Due to disconnecting abruptly using power surge set up" ' Start Windows Normally'; 'Start in Safe Mode' ;'Start Mode with Networking'; 'Start with Command Prompt. I searched for a way to fix this by doing a System Recovery of all files on hard drive according to directions on HP Support. I recovered the originals files but now have a message when I turn on computer which says: "Hardware Monitor found an error": Enter Power Setup for details. I then clicked on F5 likes it says, but once in there, I don't…

creating shares on a xp pro peer to peer network
by Guest jawdoc- 9 replies
I have a question regarding creating shares on a xp pro peer to peer network. I recently encountered a network that was setup with a peer to peer configuration even though there was a Windows 2003 server on the network. The network was setup by someone else and he created unique usernames and passwords for each node on the network. My question is, what is the easiest way to allow shares on a machine without adding every user on the network to the machine that needs to share? They don't want to go to a domain setup for some reason. Thanks in advance!

RE: OEM version of XP

RE: OEM version of XP Ask yourself what happens when you buy a new car and later on replace the tires or spray it a different colour. Let's say you also add a sun roof and then decided to sell the car. Do you think potential buyers would say you're selling a new car? Or if you went to a dealer and wanted to trade the car in for another would the dealer say your car is new? The principle is the same with anything that you upgrade - an upgraded version of something bought previously cannot be considered new. John -- Thanks and have a great day! Browsing RAM
by Guest John- 3 replies
I am wondering if there is a program inside Windows XP that will allow me to specifically browse ALL files and programs stored in all types of RAM on the system? And I mean both virtual memory, as well as any other specific types; though not necessarily CPU cache RAM, or video RAM. Just installed system RAM. I am looking for something a little more specific than just using Windows Task Manager, and clicking the Processes or Applications tabs. I realize there may be some things in RAM that I would not want to mess with, but, just in case, I am looking for a program that will allow me to shut down or remove ANY specific program(s) or file(s) from memory, ju…

I am in hopes that someone can help me with this problem. I dual boot with Vista and XP on two of my 4 machines, I have found the workaround information for hiding the Vista drive from XP do that it won't delete the Restore Points, or so it says, and I have a situation I am not sure how to resolve. Here is the workaround in the KB article: To keep Windows XP from deleting restore points of the volume in Windows Vista, add the following registry entry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\Offline registry subkey in Windows XP: Value name: \DosDevices\D: Type: REG_DWORD Value data: 1 Note If the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\Offlin…

I am working on a Dell OptiPlex GX280 that up till last week worked fine (~3 years). 1GB RAM, 2.8GB Pentium, 80GB HDD SATA, CD-RW, XP SP2. Is a network workstation. Virus & malware signatures updates hourly. Has decent firewall. Recently had added second 512MB RAM strip, but ran with no issues for weeks following. Run MS Updates routinely, but not yet loaded XP SP3 (it was not yet released at time hang/freeze issue began). Has suddenly begun to hang/freeze at about 2-3 minutes post log-in. Gives no warning, no error messages, no error beeps, continues all green lights on back panel. Initially reset to earlier restore point with no positive eff…
