Losing the Printer??
by Guest sam- 2 replies

Got an older Brother laser printer attached to the USB port running XP Pro SP2. When we first boot up, printer works great. But during the course of a day, with the PC going into and out of Hibernate mode due to disuse, soon we can no longer print. Documents sit in the print queue showing Error status. Can't even print a test page. So ... ShutDown-Restart and all is well again. What must we change to make this printer findable when coming out of Hibernate mode??

Possible to add custom file attributes?
by Guest Calab- 1 reply

I was wondering... Is it possible to add custom attributes to the file system? I would really love a "flag" attribute so I could mark files that I've processed or that I feel are important (Similar to how you can flag messages in Outlook). Of course Explorer would have to display the flag in the detailed file listing. Is this possible? Are there any utilities out there that can do this now? Thx!

application error message on startup
by Guest wolfsigh- 4 replies

Hey there, I am running XP Home SP 2. When I boot up Windows, I get the following error message when the desktop appears: The instruction at "0x7c918fea" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be "written". The error message started after I recently set up a home network and had problems connecting. I finally got connected when I "undid" settings from TCP Optimization software. I also enabled certain services under services.msc. I'm not sure which one made the difference, but something worked. Not sure which services I enabled either. The error message doesn't seem to make any difference other than being annoying. How can…

Dear All, I was wondering is there only %1 available when changing Folder Options/File Types? I'm noticing the %1 passed the whole filename including folder, I think this is causing a program with the DOS program I'm using and I was wondering if there is anyway of just passing the filename? Hope someone can help.. Regards Paul.

I have reinstalled windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 on my Inspiron 6000. I did not save anything, so I am starting fresh. I am unable to access the internet. What is wrong? I can't play videos or cd's because it is telling me that I have no sound device. I go and check, and it tells me it is working. I just need to get the internet up and going so I can download any drivers required. I have a second computer which is my main desktop, and I am running a wireless device - Wireless-G 2.5 Broadband Router. Your most sencere help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- PEACE!

Fatal Error when installing Net Zero
by Guest dobielover- 4 replies

The Problem: "A fatal error has been detected and the application must be terminated." I have been having trouble with Net Zero dial up (not connecting) so I uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times which didn't resolve the problem. Then I started getting the above message so I got a new disk thinking the old one might be corrupted. Same problem when I attempted reinstall. The error messages also includes "Can't load properties from file ...prop.enc." The last line is: "Caused by Win32Exception: Call to Create File()failed with (2) The system cannot find the file specified." I also did a clean boot and attempted another install with the…

Installation errors

My mother-in-law has a Compaq Presario desktop running WinXP Home edition. 40GB HD with 26GB free. Last week, while trying to install an upgrade to Norton antivirus. she encountered problems with the installation and was unable to compete the process. Somehow, it also affected MS Works 2002 (unable to run the word processor). After a couple of days of trying, i believe I have uninstalled Norton & MS Works (with the intent of re-installing both). Initially, I thought I was having problems with MS Installer> It kept ending prematurely. I believe I now have that running properly (somewhere along the line, the OS booted in Safe mode & Ive cor…

How can I prevent the program from starting when the other users log on?

Explorer and boot process freezes
by Guest JP- 5 replies

These both happen on one laptop sometimes: 1. Windows Explorer freezes when changing navigation from one folder to another. Sometimes it will recover itself after a minute or so. Or we can click close to stop non-responding program. The desktop shell then restarts by itself. Other applcations can be run normally while Explorer itself is frozen. And the frozen window can be minimised. 2. The boot hangs after the Start Up display appears. Including the /SOS switch in the boot.ini showed that it froze after all drivers are loaded and when a primary GUI appears to show the Windows version and CPU information. Hard-shut-down>start in Safe Mode>shut-down,>…
