How can I change the drive letter of my Windows system volume?
by Guest Robert Colgan- 6 replies
I was doing a fresh install of Windows XP on my laptop, and I accidentally left my flash drive in the computer. Now, my system volume, which I want to be C:, is F:. I tried to change this using Disk Management, but it says "Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume." Is there some other way to do this? I have the Windows install CD and a PartedMagic CD -- can I use either of those to fix it?

What determines if file attachment is read-only?
by Guest Sandee- 6 replies

Sometimes my co-workers send me Outlook 2003 e-mails with an attachment [MS Office Suite document] that is designated as read-only. They have not specified that this attachment be read only. Why does this happen, and is there a setting we need to change? It's sporadic. Thanks.

Someone gave me a folder where he made the jpgs hidden system files. Right clicking on Properties doesn't have anything. So how do I restore them to normal files? Do I have to shell out to the command prompt and set some attribute there? Don <www.donwiss.com> (e-mail link at home page bottom).

chkdsk /f doesn't bring up the console after boot? (Problems running autochk).
by Guest Bill in Co.- 7 replies

Anybody else run into this problem? Normally, if you run chkdsk /f, and reboot, it runs it in that smaller blue console window, and then after completion finally boots up into Windows. Not doing that here anymore, for some reason. My disk Volume is "clean" (dirty bit is off). And the normal runs of chkdsk are pretty good (I get the "correcting errors in the volume bitmap" stuff, but nothing really outrageous here) So now what I notice (after having run chkdsk /f once) is that takes a noticably longer amount of time to finish booting up into Windows. And then if I reboot, it does the same thing again - takes a longer amount of time (than …

by Guest sbernelli@hotmail.com- 0 replies
- 90 views
I'm running Windows XP, Pro and was looking for a way to lock all desktop icons so that people cannot change, rename, re-arrange, delete or add icons but can click on an icon to open the related program. I tried a download called Icon Restore but it doesn't work well when you have a lot of icons. (I only have about fifty-five.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks..

Just recovered from a hijack/virus/malware. Somehow the drives (C: hard drive, D: floppy) have dissappeared from My Computer...but they are still there and they are present in a newly created user acct. Can't find the path by backing out of My Documents neither so no access to My Programs, etc. Hard disk and floppy are ident as C: and D: in Hardware. re-installed XP w/SP2 & Lost Hibernate & Standby features
by Guest LosRaider- 2 replies

Hi everyone- I purchased a Compaq Presario V2310US laptop- it had Windows XP installed- and it was running great. I upgraded the memory in the machine to 2 gigs and decided to re-install Windows XP a week after doing so. I wanted to do a complete wipeout and re-install of Windows XP- this laptop has its own Windows XP license attached to it but no CD so I used my Window XP w/SP2 disk that I purchased a couple of years ago (when I had a machine that needed it) The laptop has it's own product key to go with its license of Windows XP- so I used it's own product key to reinstall it. I inserted my Windows XP CD and did a complete re-install everything …

DVD Drive -- "No Disc" error
by Guest John- 8 replies
There's a problem that I've had several times with my DVD drive, and it just happened again yesterday. Basically, the system gets into a state where it says there is no disk in the drive, even though there is. I've tried using different disks, both new and previously-written, both CD and DVD, and it won't see any of them Rebooting sometimes helps, sometimes not. Then after several hours of doing nothing, it works again. I've used Device Manager to check the drive and it says the device is working properly. I tried removing it from device manager and letting Windows rediscover it, and it announces that it has found new hardware and properly identifies t…

Installing XP & Key code question
by Guest James- 18 replies
Hello, I have a legal license's copy of XP which came loaded on my HP Desktop computer. The XP software for doing a re-install is part of the whole software package that came with the computer and is not a separate disc. I was wondering if I bought a new full version XP disc and used it to load XP on my HP desktop computer in the future. Would the new XP disc continue to load if I use the key code that came with my HP computer instead of using the key code that came with the disc? In other words; could I use the new disc just for installing XP on my desktop and then use the new disc and the licenses that came with it to install on another computer? I d…

Wait for network GPO not working as expected
by Guest Scott McDermott- 0 replies

I have an environment with a number of Windows XP SP2 laptops which autologon at boot. Frequently, the wireless network is not available at the point where the autologon takes place, resulting in an error message that the domain is not available. We have tried setting the "Administrative Templates\System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" in group policy, but it does not appear to be helping. Is there a way to ensure that the network is up before the system attempts to autologon? Is the policy not working properly, or does it not actually do what we expect? What we expected was that the system would not give the logon promp…

SP2 problem not mentioned before
by Guest Sclo3- 7 replies

When attempting to update Adobe, AVG etc, the process requests I download SP2. When on the MS page for d/l of SP2 it states “Your computer has already been upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). For tips or help using it, see the SP2 support and how-tos.” I’m no technical bod but can follow instructions and am now at a real loss what to do. My review of auto update on 24th Dec 2007 shows SP2 download cancelled (not by me!). All d/ls thereafter have failed. Has anybody any solutions/ideas? Thanks

Accounts With Blank Passwords Show Password Protected Again
by Guest The Computer Lab of Zephyrhills- 1 reply

This is a Dell Dimension 4600 with XP PRo still with SP1. When I remove all four user's passwords they show cleared; then if I return right back to the Users applet, they show they are password protected again. Did this six times. The password asked for is unknown. Does not affect the "Test" account I created. So, I'll go for a malware infection but need what cleaning tool to look for besides re-Ghosting the machine. That would be too easy but I am always curious for detailed fixes.
