Open Remote executable? 1 2
by Guest Chuck Anderson- 26 replies

s this simply not possible over a Windows XP LAN? I have a wireless network in my home with one remote computer. I have shared a folder containing installation files. Some are zip files, others are executables. I want to install software on the remote machine by opening shared .exe installation files, but when I try to Open them, nothing happens. I can see why this might be considered a security risk, but is there a way to tell Windows XP to open them anyway? (I have already disabled the firewall.) TIA, Chuck

Uninstalling Programs That Don't Show in Add/Remove
by Guest Lonnie-in-Carlsbad- 6 replies

I have a number of applications that are no longer used but who have various "helper" programs still running in background. They don't show in the Add/Remove software list that you access from Control panel. In one case, the application never was listed, so I need to uninstall the whole thing manually. I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP2. Here are some examples. These are not all of the list, but they will illustrate the extent and variety of the problem. I have full administrative assess to my system, but I don't know where these "background" helper programs get run from. If I had knowledge of where the various places where they get run at startup lo…

by Guest Donna- 2 replies

My laptop died. I pulled the hard drive to use as an external drive. Unfortuantely, I used a password on my laptop prior to its death, now I cannot access the one directory I want. All the HELP says to move the directory to the shared folders. I cannot move it or copy it. It says "access denied." I know the password; I just cannot figure out how to get the computer to ask me for it. Anyone??? Thanks.

My VPN was working just fine until a week ago when my home pc had some driver issues (printer and video). I restored those just fine, but ever since then I have not been able to use VPN to get into work. I turned off my firewall LiveOneCare firewall, but that did not seem to help. I get a message saying that it is "Connecting", but then when it is trying to accept my password, it gets hung up and times out. It will try two more times then eventually fails. Anyone have any idea?

removal from system tray
by Guest Jo-Anne Naples- 7 replies

My computer came with an icon for Dell Support Alerts in the system tray. I've tried to get rid of it the usual way, by right-clicking on the icon, and looking for Properties--but the only options on a right-click are View Alerts, Alert Settings, and Exit. If I click Exit, the icon disappears; but it pops up again at the next boot-up or after 24 hours. I have a Windows XP computer with SP3 installed. Is there a relatively simple way to delete this icon from the tray? Thanks much! Jo-Anne

Dynamic Update vs. Auto Update
by Guest njirishdoll- 1 reply
I already have Windows XP installed, and use Auto Update. What is the difference between Dynamic Update/Auto Update? On Microsoft Updates it explained each one, but not in detail. It seemed to me that if I was going to be installing Win. XP for the first time I should install Dynamic first. When finished, remove Dynamic-then install Auto for continued use. Am I correct or confused? Thanks!

Most likely you have some third-party customization in your Control Panel that isn't compatible with XPsp3. Just to be clear about your symptom. Does it still occur if you open Device Manager directly? (E.g. use Run... devmgmt.msc ) FWIW what I would try to d…

Restoring users after complete system restore
by Guest FrankF- 1 reply

I had to completely restore my 2004 HP Pavillion a387x desktop which is running XP Home. I used the restore CD, loaded SP2 when that was completed and reloaded my virus software. In the process of the restore, I did not reformat the hard drive so I could keep all of my data files... and users. When it was time to configure the desktop after the restore, I re-entered each user name exactly as they were previously. When they logged on the first time the machine hung-up and had to be hard booted. When I looked at the file structure, the old users remained in their entirity, and the new users that had attempted to log on, created new folders (now with an …

Problem with device driver
by Guest Marty- 5 replies

OS=XP/SP2 up-to-date. Device Manager reports the CD-RW CDR-7S52, Driver 5.1.2535.0, is working properly, but when I try to use it a blue screen appears and the computer must be shut down. On reboot a message says the system has recovered from a serious error. Microsoft error reporting responds that the problem was caused by a device driver. The Windows Hardware Update Wizard, searching Windows Update, finds no better match than the driver being used. Windows has never failed to start with the device connected. Anyone have a solution?
