Microsoft upgrades
by Guest John- 5 replies
Recently I signed up for internet service after an absence of a couple of years. Shortly afterwards I started getting automatic upgrades from Microsoft. This was fine except the process added 184 folders with files to my computer which has the Windows XP Home operating system. The folders are all marked as $NTUninstall...... The dots represent letters, symbols and numbers after the word uninstall. I haven't checked the size of each folder but there are some that exceed 1.5MB. This is obviously taking up a great deal of space on my hard drive which doesn't sit well with me. My question is: Can I deletes these folders without affecting the operation …

Re: File cut in "File Open" (Excel)
by Guest Alan- 0 replies

Re: File cut in "File Open" (Excel) Gone, I just re-read your post more carefully than I originally did. So maybe I'm not exactly sure what it was that you were attempting. What version of Excel are you using? In all the versions of Excel that I have on my various machines, the 'Cut' option is in the Edit menu, not the File menu. And when you use the 'Cut' you should have a second Excel worksheet open in which to Paste the contents. That said, I still prefer to use Edit | Copy | Paste rather than Edit | Cut | Paste for the same reasons I gave in my earlier reply. Alan "Alan" <somewhere@nospam.not> wrote in message news:... &g…

From Excel's "File Open" dialog box, I cut the latest version of a file to replace a previous version in a different folder. The previous version remained and the latest version was deleted and it's not in the Recycle Bin or anyplace else. Is this a bug? Windows XP Home SP2

Is it safe to delete system restore back-up files?
by Guest Joshua- 4 replies
When I do a system restore I get back up files in the "documents and settings" folder. The back-up files are numbered each time I do a restore and are in a folder that look something like this: "Owner.YOUR-US67PI6LUV.010". These folder's take up a lot of space, sometimes a few gigabytes. I want to free up some space on my computer. My question is: Is it safe to delete these folders? at least the older ones from older system restore's? when I do a new restore I got all the back-up I need for that restore, so is it safe for me to delete the old restore back-up files to free up some space on my hard drive? Thanks

Is it that bad?

Ok...I have E-Machine desktop T2482...which comes with an AMD processor, but for whatever reason...Windows SP3 installed without any problems. Anyway, my problem. I had Zone Alarm security suite, but today a nag screen came on to tell me I had just 30 days to renew my subscription. I got ZA through Trial Pay, so I didn't pay for it the first time, and I *thought* it was forever. I guess I thought wrong. Well I copped that * I'll show them* attitude and uninstalled it, (like they really care) and installed the AOL/McAfee security suite. It too is free if you have an AOL email address. My question ...is it anywhere near as good? I've read some not so nice t…

by Guest hermiona- 9 replies

Every time when I try to open My documents, or My computer, control panel, search, or any folder on my desktop, my computer crashes. It says, on a blue screen(!) something like this: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Extra Add & Remove Icons in Control Panel
by Guest Alan- 3 replies
Hi all, A few weeks ago right after I first installed -- and then uninstalled -- SP3, I noticed I had an extra Add & Remove icon in my Control Panel. Although the 'extra' A & R showed a generic icon, it brought up the usual Add and Remove application. A few days later, it then had the usual A & R icon. Once again, both icons invoked the Add and Remove application as expected. After I did a System Restore a few days ago for another issue -- which also brought back SP3 -- I noticed I now have THREE Add & Remove icons. I'm running XP Home and, as I mentioned, SP3 is once again installed. The PC is clean of viruses and malware, at le…

Drive Not Found- Error 41
by Guest Don Williams- 4 replies

Strange development in migrating from XP Pro to SP2, or somewhere along the way. I have a mix of EIDE AND SCSI devices on my main system and run XP Pro and SCO OSR (Unix). Both OSs share two SCSI CD drives, one of which is a burner. Unix sees the drives just fine. XP Pro installs drivers for the SCSI CD drives, however it reports Error 41 (device not found) when you check hardware properties. Drive letters are no longer assigned for these two devices. I don't remember exactly where this issue developed, but had been noticing (and ignoring) some problems for some time. Any suggestions to bring these drives back to life under Windows would be …

Any experience installing SP3 on a Mac BootCamp partition?
by Guest Juan I. Cahis- 6 replies

Dear friends, do you have any experience installing Windows SP3 for XP-Pro on a Mac BootCamp partition? I access this partition through BootCamp and also through VMWare Fusion without any problem up to now. My installation is fully updated from the updates from Microsoft (including those post SP3), Apple (including BootCamp 2.1 for Windows) and VMWare (1.2), but before installing SP3, I would want to read some experiences from you. Any hint? Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago de Chile (South America) Note: Please forgive me for my bad English, I am trying to improve it!

Unload Unnecessary DLLs From Memory - Good Idea?
by Guest Daddy- 1 reply
I have Windows XP Home SP 3. Normally, when you close a program, any associated DLLs it has been using should also be closed. I have read that this doesn't always happen - sometimes DLLs no longer needed are not closed - and that this can result in a sluggish and unstable system. There is a registry edit published to allegedly fix this problem: In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer you create a new DWORD value called AlwaysUnloadDll and give it a value of 1. This is supposed to ensure that unneeded DLLs are always unloaded from memory when their associated program closes. I like to think I have a pretty advanced level of knowledge, and I've c…

Why were changed dates of Windows, System32?
by Guest Levlg- 2 replies
I have WinXP + SP2 + avast, everything works properly for 4 years approximately. Suddenly I noticed that the dates of some folders were changed to the current or recent. There were changed dates of Windows, System32 and a few non-system folders. But, for example, date of the Documents and Settings was not changed, it's 2004. I thought these dates are dates of folder creation. Is it not true? Why this happens? Thank you Lev
