Hello, I have a HP Pavillion that uses Windows XP. Recently my computer has appeared to be playing a sound but I cannot hear anything. My volume control icon has disappeared from the taskbar. I cannot adjust the volume and when I try to adjust the volume I get an error message saying: "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware." A day or two ago I tried to troubleshoot my problem. After trying to troubleshoot my problem for a while I got to a point where I noticed there was a yellow exclamation sign next to a device in the device manager c…

Reinstalling XP on new drive - activation question
by Guest Charlie7805- 6 replies

After years of installing / uninstalling programs, it's time to start with a fresh install of XP home. I have a slave drive which I'll use after formating it that will become my new boot drive. I want to completely setup this new boot drive with windows, all updates, all programs, etc. before formating my current boot drive and having it as my new slave. Installing everything on the new drive will take a week or so due to my limited available time daily. I will need to continue using my current drive during this process. I plan on just switching the IDE cable back to my current boot drive daily until done. My question is in order for me to d/l wind…

Disk boot failure...
by Guest Mike- 8 replies

The HD on one of my computers recently crapped out & after replacing it, reloaded XP Pro. My boot sequence is set to C, CD-ROM, A, but unless I have the CD in the machine, I get the message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER If I leave the CD in, it will give me the option to boot from the CD, even though C is my first boot option. Once it times out, it boots to windows. Any ideas why? -- This post made under sniper fire.

XP: Open folders get closed on reboot?
by Guest Doug Bashford- 7 replies

Open folders get closed on reboot? It used to be in XP that open files "stayed open" after a reboot. That was cool, a neat way and reminder to continue working where I was before booting. After installing a program, (WinAce archiver,) that went away, and it acts like Win3/95/98 did. Anybody know a way to get that feature back? Thanks! --Doug PURE Republicanism?? It's now clear. HI EVERYONE.... LET ME JUST START BY SAYING THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED ME OUT WITH MY COMPUTER ISSUES. FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS, I HAD TO COMPLETELY REINSTALL MY WINXP PROF 2002, SP3 AND WAS SUCCESSFUL... HOPE TO NEVER HAVE TO DO THIS AGAIN. I HAVE HAD MY SYSTEM FOR EIGHT YEARS (DELL) AND IT'S BEEN COMPLETELY REINSTALLED TWICE SINCE. LAST REINSTALLMENT WAS DEC. 06 BY A PROFESSIONAL IT PERSON AND IT WENT UNEVENTFUL. MY SYSTEM WAS UP AND RUNNING. WHENEVER THE UPDATE TO SP3 HAPPENED, IT DID SO ALL ON ITS OWN BECAUSE I DON'T RECALL IT AS I WAS NEVER SO TECHNICALLY INVOLVED WITH MY COMP UNTIL I STARTED MY HOME BUSINESS AND IN ORDER TO SAVE…

SP3 install space problem
by Guest Don Williams- 4 replies

I am limited to 8 GB on my C: drive because I have to be able to boot Unix from within the first 1024 virtual cylinders. I generraly can get around 1GB free on drive : SP3 install runs to near completion but then reports a space problem and then does a full self un-install- I always install programs on my other very large drives, but some must go in C: 1. What files can I safely relocate temporarily during SP3 installation? or 2. Is there a way to use another drive to handle part ov the install process? Thanks, DAW

usb warning "this device could perform faster" showing up... sometimes.
by Guest Nicolas Richard- 5 replies

Hello, I hope someone can help me about the following problem : when I connect my USB memory stick (Kingston Datatraveler, model DTI/1Gb), I get most of the time the warning "this device could perform faster" and the speed is not good, as being warned. But if I remove the stick, then put it back a few times, the warning will eventually not come back. I cannot figure out how and why the problem disappears, but when the message doesn't show up anymore the speed gets better. Some details: - this happens on two computers, both running Win XP (this one is Win XP home edition SP2, the other computer I think runs Win XP profesionnal edition but I'm unsure). - I d…

Windows Server 2003 Test Installation
by Guest mcp6453- 4 replies

As I have posted previously, I'm a volunteer admin on a Windows Server 2003 standard installation. I'm thinking it would be helpful for me to build a test server at home for experimentation. Did Microsoft release a 120 or 180 trial for 2003? I have the one for 2000, and I thought I had one for 2003, but I am unable to put my hands on it. If such a package were released, is it possible to download it from somewhere? Microsoft would have distributed them freely, and they are time-limited, so there is not copyright problem. I thought about subscribing to Microsoft's annual software plan for techs (the name escapes me at the moment), but that's pretty hard…

Hello, System is running Windows Xp Professional. System was running perfectly fine till this Thursday. I'm running the Complete Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 software suite. Problem started on Friday morning. Clicked on Outlook icon and the box came up stating to install software. I prompted throught the screens and it errored out with the following: Part 1: Microsoft Office Outlook has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application. Part 2: The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not correctly i…

I have a new computer. I went to install my Acronis True Image v9 but low and behold, NO registration number on the CD or sleeve. I have the retail box but nothing is in it. Acronis cannot find my account so maybe I never registered with them? It isn't like me not to register. I had to have had the registration # when I installed and Acronis tells me it is on the Quick Start paper that came with the software. I've no idea where that is; have spent the day looking but no luck (if you could see my office, you'd know why). I still have the old hard drive from my old computer, which I'm using in a USB external drive container for backups. I can see my Acronis …

DFXHHQ38 Hello, I am in desperate need of some help. I am in the UK and have recently changed my ISP from Virgin to Sky. Apart from the atrocious and pathetic service offered by Sky to me, I have discovered that my internet connectivity is down because of a Winsock error. The diagnostic program Netdiag is so unreliable that although it first notified me that the error was due to an LSP in the Winsock, it has never notified me since I deleted the Registry entry and the Program folder entry about the error ever again. Instead the Netdiag tells me that it cannot connect to the internet because the http, https and ftp ports are blocked by a firewall whi…

Can't create .fnd files that remember directories
by Guest Greg Boettcher- 0 replies

Under Windows XP, I can't create .fnd "saved search" files that remember which directory is to be searched. Here's what I'm doing: 1. Start -> Search -> Files or Folders. 2. Get rid of the stupid animated puppy. 3. Where it says "Look in", choose "Browse" and navigate to the desired directory. 4. I type nothing in the "file name" or "word or phase" fields, as my purpose is to search everything in the desired directory. 5. Click Search. 6. A search of all files in my chosen directory didn't take long. But if it had, I could have clicked "Stop" during the search. 7. Select File -> Save Search and choose and appropriate filename/ location for a new .f…

Hi Guys, Using xp sp3. Under Start, Control Panel, Networking Connections, I get a "cannot find network hardware" message. Also no items show up when I use Device Manager. I think this may have happened after I installed MMC, however I cannot find out how to uninstall this service. I have check forums and some newgroups with no success. I also set the show hidden details in Device Manager. I have admin rights and I believe that these two conditions are somehow related. Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- Thanks Buddy

When the 'hide inactive icons' is checked there are two arrows on the notification area and when I click one to display the hidden icons the arrow goes two the left leaving behind a series of vertical lines.
