Wierd Linksys, dhcp and slow network problem
by Guest witchwise- 0 replies

Hello, The basic setup:-I have a WRT54GS Linksys wireless router, one PC, which is always on, is networked directly to the router via ethernet cable, and two PC's using linksys wireless adapters. One of these PC's is new and I have just set it up. My Problem:- When my new PC (wireless) is turned on, the network on it alone, is very slow UNLESS i turn on the laptop as well (also wireless). When that happens, the network traffic on the new PC works absolutely fine. So basically at the minute, in order to stream movies and copy files over on to the new wireless PC i *have* to have the laptop on as well! I figure this is something to do with the routing table…

Wrong Icons for DVD drives
by Guest greggsy- 11 replies

Can anyone shed any light on my problem please. When I go into My Computer the icon for the hard drives and DVDs are all generic so that I am unable to see at a glance which is the DVD drives. I have been into Device Manager and the DVD drives (2) are correctly identified. I have checked as suggested by some in the registry for Drive Icons but this does not exist. I am running XP Pro with all the updates. My video card is Nvidia but I do not thinkl that has any bearing on the problem -- greggsy

Hello, I am new here. I generally leave my computer on and occassionaly I will come back to my pc after 5 minutes having been working on important documentation and find that an automatic update has occured and my pc has restarted. I then lose valuable data - end up cursing and generally it ruins the rest of my day. I am sure the Microsoft guys get a kick out of ruining people's days but HOW DO I DISABLE AN AUTOMATIC RESTART! McAfee requests that I restart - so how do I do the same for my Microsoft restart. I am fearing for the safety of my PC because this is driving me to madness.

XP clients terrible performance when old server is disconnected ne
by Guest Danny F- 1 reply

I have an issue that has been driving me insane. I have 4 Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations. All the Accounting Dept PC’s. I also have an old Windows 2000 SP4 Server that I want to take offline and decommission. The problem is as soon as I disconnect this server or shut it down. The 4 workstations slow to a crawl. Not just on the network but performance as well. Here is the scenario: Workstation 1 connected to network and Server Old connected to network. Everything works great, PC’s screaming fast. Unplug network cable of ServerOld, workstation1 slows to a crawl. Open command prompt and type notepad to open notepad 60 seconds before notepad opens. (I…

restart problem
by Guest oldbiker- 3 replies
We are sometimes told "please reboot your computer" If I do this by closing down and then switching on again (a cold boot) all is fine, BUT if I do this by clicking restart (a hot boot), the computer shuts down tries to switch on again and after being given the option to go into bios the screen goes black and the message "error loading operating system" appears. If I now cut the power and switch on again it boots up fine. What is going on?

Again, I thank all of you for input. The problem turned out to be a need for a 'Firm-ware' update,, even though the modem was only purchased a few months ago. Moral of story,,, dont use 'virginbroadband' as an isp,, cos' Richard will be out Ballooning across the country rather than looking after his customers. Thanks to all again.

Run task before logging off?
by Guest simonc- 2 replies

I made some temporary changes to various security settings for a particular purpose and know there is a danger I'll forget to reset them afterwards. Is there any way you can get a reminder/task to run whenever you try to log off/shut down which would prompt you to reset them? Grateful for ideas.

Installed SP3, now getting "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem" message

Installed SP3, now getting "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem" message My daughter has a laptop, and a non-admin user account on it. I take it every month or so and log on as administrator to take care of some basic maintenance. It was running XP SP2 and AVG 8. When I logged in, the first updates it asked me to install were the ones from the 9/14 Windows Update, seven in all. After the required restart, it pushed SP3 to me (I'd had a problem related to a corrupted installation file installing this previously). This installed fine and quickly, and then the computer restarted. No big deal, I've installed three other SP3…

Two XP machines, same product key
by Guest PanHandler- 7 replies

Yesterday I bought a new eMachine at Wal-Mart for $298, with XP Home preinstalled. After getting it configured and loading some programs I wanted to get some info on the machine, so I loaded the Aida SysInfo utility and while poking around in it noticed that the OS key looked familiar. I went to my list of machines/keys on my other computers and found the SAME key in use on one of my old (5 Year) eMachines that I sold about a year ago! I read both keys at least five times to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. What the hell? What are the odds of M$ doing that accidentally, and on top of that, the chances an individual would ever catch it? How the hell can t…

I have about 10 seconds to get to Control Panel and Power Managment before it shuts down. I tried with a boot from CD app, but it will not allow me to run any applicatons (like for power mgmt). Does anyone have a suggestion?

Microsoft Updates Question:
by Guest Navyguy- 3 replies
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, with DSL connection. I have AVG antivirus free version, Comodo firewall, Spyware Blaster and Hive Cleanup. All of these have run well together and I have had no problems. Yesterday I ran Microsoft automatic updates and all went well and all updates were successful. However since that time the Security update KB956841 keeps coming up to be updated like it's in a loop or something. In fact, I just updated it before this post and now its back again! I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to stop it or correct this so it will end the loop. Thanks, …

Windows Explorer crashes (nearly)
by Guest horst- 4 replies

I have just installed Windows XP (in parallel to Windows 2000) and it works well with one strange exception. I open Windows Explorer with folder list on the left. When I open a folder with about 5000 files on the right side, I get the content in a couple of seconds. But when I click on the same folder on the left side everything freezes and even Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work. But if I wait long enough (over 6-10 minutes) suddenly the task manager appears telling that Explorer is not working. I close the task manager (without killing Explorer) and after another minute finally Explorer shows the content of the folder and everything seems to be OK again! Clicking on…

Offline Files - Files of this type cannot be made Available
by Guest Kenny- 3 replies

Hello, Windows XP SP2 machine folder synchronization and redirection of "My Documents" to a Windows Server 2003 RC2 SP2 I have an User that has tons of Access databases (mdb & dbfs) that he cannot synchronize offline. He receives the following error message. Unable to make filename.mdb available offline on \\server\location. Files of this type cannot be made available offline. This sounds like a permissions problem, but I don't see anything wrong. Any suggestions. Thanks.
