WinXP emailer won't open .GIF attachments ??
by Guest Doug Bashford- 8 replies

WinXP mailers won't open .GIF attachments ?? They opens JPG files fine. I first noticed this over a year ago, but didn't have time to get to the bottom of this. I thought perhaps it was just a fluke limited to one machine, but now it seems that all XP machines I send .GIF pictures to can't open them. (People don't tend to mention this, I have to ask them.) (I send the email with Eudora 5.2. No other platform has this problem.) One XP user said she fixed the problem by editing her registry, then save the attachment, then open it with another viewer. (She also said it wouldn't open ZIP or EXE files.) I call that a work-around. Is there a real …

by Guest Flycaster- 5 replies

Dell Dimension 4600, Pentium 4, Windows XP SP2, plenty of RAM, Geforce FX5200 (updated drivers). Youtube and iTunes play well when computer is first booted up. But if I try to play them, let's say after the computer has been in use for and hour or so, then everything (sound and video) is in slow motion. Otherwise, everything else on the computer functions quite fast at all times. This has been going on for about 6 months and nothing I try seems to help, maybe one of you guys/gals can? -- To email, erase "forgetit"

Will XP Pro boot disk work on XP Home system?
by Guest SilverGhost- 6 replies
I'm trying to help someone long distance. She has an XP Home system that won't boot into XP. I suspect a failed HDD. She can see system info at bootup, but can't go beyond the Windows splash screen. She can make a bootable CD (but not a FDD) on her XP Professional system at work to use with a DOS-based HDD diagnostic program. Can anyone tell me if a bootable CD created on a Pro system will work on her Home system? Thanks.

My laptop has wireless capability but when I'm at home it is hooked up to DSL. The baloon that tells me what the status is of the wireless connection keeps popping up as it changes ( I live in a spot that doesn't get a strong connection ). Is there a way to turn it off and then back on when I need it should I take my computer somewhere with me? Thanks for any help you can give.

Properties always shows some R/O files ?
by Guest Peter- 2 replies

I've noticed something odd. For ANY folder (NTFS, XP SP3) a right click / Properties shows a partly coloured R/O box, suggesting the folder contains some R/O files. But there aren't any! I have set it to show all protected O/S files etc. Maybe there are still some hidden ones in there. What are they? x----------x

After Windows Update Laptop Keeps Accessing Disk and Fan Kicks In
by Guest Antony Scerri- 7 replies

Hi I did a check through previous post and a few people seem to have had similar problems without specific details, so im going in for as much detail as I have. I have a relatively new laptop (Nov 2007, not used much as migrated from old machine which i hung onto). The machine hasnt got filled with dust, and till the exact time of the automatic update was behaving fine. Yesterday I used Windows/Microsoft updates to apply the latest updates, i only got 7 of them including office updates. The scan for updates took a long time, 2 minutes nearly, with the CPU at 100%. I hadnt had this the last time i ran it. Anyway after it finished and i applied the updat…

My machine is dual boot, with XP Pro on Partition 1 (C:) and XP x64 on Partition 2 (D:) I had a disk problem (raid drivers, blue screen crashes) on C: I was able to backup D: partition using Paragon Drive Backup, but C: was not saveable by this method, so I copied my files out of C: I rebuilt my raid 0 and reinstalled XP on C: and restored D: from the backup. XP Pro on C: is OK but XP x64 wil not boot. Error Message: Windows could not start because the folowing file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file. The file is not missing, and I do not believe it is corrupt. When I started XP,…

boot.ini. Two questions
by Guest Humpty Dumpty- 3 replies
I wasn't able to create a NTBTLOG.TXT file. I need to see what causes my computer not being able to restart properly. So, I went to msconfig and had a look at my boot.ini file. question 1) the checkbox are greyed out. Meaning, I cannot check the "bootlog" box. Could it be possible (and safe) to add the switch \bootlog manually? If affirmative, how should the editing be done, in msconfig, or opening the file in notepad? question 2) What is the meaning of the switch "\NoExecute=Optin"? TIA Humpty

Program Installation Problem
by Guest Maurice- 3 replies
I have a problem when attempting to install any program on my HP notebook PC. The installation will initiate, and progress one - three stages further, when the whole installation process suddenly terminates itself. No error message, or anything other notifications are given. It seems as if the installation process tmes itself out, which occurs after only a few seconds from initiating an install. I have admin rights, and also attempted to install from a different location viz. CD or flash drive. This problem is driving me nuts. Does anybody recognize this strange behaviour, and can someone please provide me with some help to resolve it ? Kind regards

How to simulate mouse movements to prevent screen saver activation?
by Guest Sabine Elsner- 1 reply
In our office the admins tend to be crazy. They configured the ScreenSaver activation after 8 (!) minutes of no mouse movement. After screen saver activation I have to re-logon and re-type my password. This is very inconvenient. Unfortunately I cannot change the screen saver activation time because it is managed central by the server and not adjustable on my workstation. So I am thinking about writing a program which simulates mouse movements by a pixel each minute. Is this possible somehow? Sabine

I have windows XP SP2. Recently I had to update from MSN Messenger 7.0 to the new version of windows live messenger. I don't know whether it is a coincidence or not, but every now and then I am unable to open some .pps entensions. Would updating to windows live messenger cause this? I have a few saved .pps extensions on my computer that I do not have any trouble with opening. I am using the 2003 power point reader version. -- Wayne

Multiple IDE's
by Guest Rich- 0 replies

Recently an installation disk created problems with my CD's drives, a CD/DVD-R and a CD. I uninstalled the drives and they reistalled. The problem is that I hear a clicking sound when they play. I was advised in a forum to uninstall the primary and secondary IDE's. It solved the problem. Once again an installation disk (the same one) has created the same problem. I looked at the IDE's and I now have three primary and three secondary IDE's. Question - I would like to do the uninstall thing again. Should I do it on all three primary and secondary? They are all identical, except that the first one of each does not have a disable function. I appreciat…

Wireless mouse issue or Computer?
by Guest DavidK311- 3 replies

I have the Microsoft Optical Mouse Blue. Has worked great. Recently, it takes at least 3 clicks to open web pages and email and pretty much anything I do on the computer. I changed the batteries so that is not the issue. Is this a memory problem with my computer or something isolated to mouse? This is a very annoying issue since I have to click 3 times to do anything.
