Cancel autoplay on usb hard drives?
by Guest spamlet- 1 reply

I have recently started using a couple of MyBook hard drives for back up, connected by USB. With our XPPro system. When started with the pc they immediately behave like part of the system, but if started only when needed, with the system already running, a dialogue pops up asking if I want to transfer all the files from the new drives back to the pc. In case someone accidentally hits the wrong button, how do I stop the pop up dialogue applying to these particular usb devices? Cheers, S

Active Desktop Recovery
by Guest fishbone- 0 replies

Is there a list of possible causes for the Active Desktop Recovery? We are getting this on a number of our domain pc's. We use active desktop via group policy to deploy our standard desktop backgrounds so i can't turn it off but i was wondering what causes the problem. I have searched some forums and there are some laughable comments and solutions on there. Is this caused by a file corruption? We have a reg fix that fixes the problem by resetting the DeskHtmlVersion key to 0 but i'm not sure what that does exactly. Anyone any idea what the true cause of the problem is? cheers Craig

No sound after reformat

Reformatted the other day. Everything seems OK except I have no sound whatsoever. I have a dell dimension 3000 XP. When I go into Device Manager there are some yellow Question Marks next to the 'Other Devices'. Namely. 1. Ethernet controller(though I could not connect my modem via Ethernet when i tried months ago so perhaps that's why?) 2.Multimedia Audio Controller. 3. PCI Modem (which I presume onl;y apples to dial up) I am guessing that No 2 would be the sound? I did save all my drivers with something called 'Drivermax' but haven't a clue what driver is what when I look in the saved folder. Is there a simple way of identifyind and downloading the re…

This morning we were greeted by a blue screen Stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82f2a828, 0x00000000) on start up. I tried to start in Safe mode, safe mode with CMD prompt etc. Everything ends in the same blue screen. Tried a DOS boost disk to run a chkdsk with no success. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Why is ntbtlog.txt so big?
by Guest Padredog- 2 replies
I have a gaming PC with win xp sp2 that has had problems at startup for about a year now. It will hang at the splash screen and the blue scroll will just roll on, and until recently, I would get the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" after it scrolled for about 15-30 minutes. I can alway get into safe mode. I recently enabled the /bootlog switch so I could see the ntbtlog.txt file, it is over 6 meg in size. Two other PC's I use, an emachine running XP SP2, and a Vista PC PC at work. Both of those ntbtlog files are about 27K in size. Why would my gaming PC ntbtlog file be so much bigger? I see A LOT of dupli…

Remove restore points without turning off sys restore ?
by Guest RobF- 10 replies

Win XP Home help and support seems to offer a way to remove previous point, but my restore wizard doesn't show the way, offer the option. I'd like to keep the last 2 or 3 points, and remove the rest, which is clutter and lengthens virus scan time.

I created 3 accounts along with my administrator account. Now, I can't see or log in to my administrator account. I have only one limited - user account that I can log in to - and of course, I can't update my software, etc. as a result. How do I solve this problem? / get back my administrator account? I find this strange / never knew this problem could occur. I still use my original administrator password to login through the limited user account.

IBM Laptop Power Meter
by Guest William E. Mahaffey- 8 replies

I have am IBM laptop runing XP Pro SP2. I purchased a new battery for it and everything was running fine then the laptop locked up. I tried everything I knew to get it to reboot but was unsuccessful. I let it set for several hours and It never shutdown. I removed the battery, let set for about an hour then replaced the battery. Since then the batter meter shows 0% charge in one place and battery life as unknown in another. I installed SP3 and tis did not help. I found a hotfix on the Microsoft Web site that was described as a fix for this problem but It would not install on SP3. Thanks in advance, Bill Mahaffey

Laptop does not know if it is on or off the network
by Guest Jordan- 2 replies

I have a couple of laptops that have a problem with certain features like roaming profiles and syncronization where they do not seem to know when they are off the network. Sometimes when starting up at home or elsewhere a couple of laptops will give the users an error that it cannot find their roaming profile. Also a lot of the time when they shut down syncronization will not be able to run (of course) and shutdown just sits at the file syncronization screen with the failure message forcing the users to press OK. All computers are XP Pro SP2 and all patches up to a month or two ago. Server that holds the roaming profiles and the files that the user is…
