Inserting disk causes DVD Rom drive not to be detected
by Guest Paul MR- 6 replies

XP Home, SP2 with latest updates The d:\ drive is a Sony DDU1621 DVD rom player, which is supposed to play all kinds of disks. The last time (3 months ago) when I played any disk on the d:\ drive, there was no problem. This week whenever I insert any disk into the d:\ drive, it freezes: the green light comes on in front of the tray, the yellow light comes on indicating c:\ drive activity (I think), but nothing plays. This freeze happens with commercial CD’s, CD-R’s, commercial DVD’s, DVD+R’s, DVD-R’s, and DVD-RW’s. The eject button on the tray is dead and the d:\ drive disappears from Windows Explorer and My Computer. If I reboot with the disk stil…

javascript error in IE6
by Guest Craig Schiller- 0 replies

Gurus - javascript:void(0) I'm getting the above error message when attempting to print from Google maps (or from Yahoo maps, for that matter). I'm on WinXP SP3 and using IE6, and javascripting is turned on. Same problem with Netscape 7.2 (scripting also enabled) and Opera 9.x. (ditto) Seems to be a system problem but I can't imagine what. I should mention that this is my wife's laptop. On my desktop, which also has IE6 and Netscape 7.2 (set to the same settings as far as I can see), everything works fine even without popup blockers disabled. We are both connected to the internet thru DSL via our router. Any help much appreciated. Craig

event logging after installing IE7
by Guest robertlake@boisestate.edu- 0 replies

We upgraded to IE7 on only a handful of XP computers when it was first released. Each of those computers shared a similar issue: The Application and System logs seemed to stop logging events, despite being configured to Overwrite Events Older Than - 7 days. The problem seemed to be alleviated by changing the setting to Overwrite Events As Needed. It was a minor issue that was quickly forgotten. Now, however, we've rolled out IE7 to all of our computers and I am seeing the same issue. I don't want to go too long without addressing this problem. By the way, I see an IE6 Discussion Group, but not one for IE7...thus, posting here in the XP General grou…

SP 3
by Guest George Niforos- 2 replies

I am preparing to install XP SP 3 but I have a concern. I regularly install Windows updates and a year and a half ago I installed KB911280 which fixes a security hole related to dialup access only. I was told by Microsoft to uninstall the KB911280 update which solved my problem. My question now is since Service Pack 3 is cumulative it will install KB911280 again. Will I be able to uninstall KB911280 in any way after SP 3 is installed? When KB911280 was installed via Windows update I was able to find it in "Add/Remove Programs" and remove it. Will it be listed there after SP 3 installation so that it may be removed in the same way?

Hi. My PC is running with Windows XP (SP2). When I save items to the clipboard, photos or whatever from various sources, if I open the ClipBook viewer to move these items. I don't have the option to paste them anywhere. The only option under the EDIT tab is 'Delete', the others are blanked out. My clipboard wasn't always like this, is there something that I need to enable to enable the ClipBoook to function properly, or an update etc? Would be grateful of any help.

Persist user profile when removing computer from a domain
by Guest SonOfPirate- 7 replies
I am in the process of downgrading my home office and no longer need my computers to be part of a domain. I'd like to remove them from the domain but do not want to lose my user profile in the process. If I remember correctly, when the computer is added to a domain, a new profile is created so I am assuming the same thing will happen when I remove it. I read a suggestion that I should manually create a local user and copy the domain profile using Control Panel - System - Advanced - User Profiles - Copy To button (after rebooting and logging in as Administrator) but the button is always grayed out (disabled). Even with this, I'm not confident that thi…

Turn off "computer may be at risk balloon" at start up
by Guest Moxieman- 6 replies

Windows XP Home edition. I upgraded to SP3 and turned off automatic updates. Now, EVERY time I turn on the computer, I log in and get that balloon saying that my "computer may be at risk" because I don't have auto update turned on. How do I stop having that blasted balloon come up -- without turning on automatic updates -- every time I turn on my computer? Thanks,

Two Outlook icons
by Guest AAaron123- 7 replies
I have two identical looking icons. If I right-click/properties on one I get the usual property for a shortcut file with a target ending in \OFFICE12\OUTLOOK.EXE /recycle and a caption of "Microsoft Office Outlook Properties" If I right-click/properties on the other one I get a caption of "Mail Setup - Outlook" and a dialog box that allow me to do things like Show Profiles. Seems I can delete the first one mentioned above since left-clicking either brings up Outlook so I don't need two icons. But I wonder about the "recycle". What does that do? I haven't been able to determine what left-clicking the second one does. I mean it opens Outlook b…

question about BAT file creation
by Guest Tim.T- 9 replies
I have Temp folders on more than one drive, and often they get full with files created by particular software I use; I just want to be able to check their contents, and if neccessary remove the files therein. While I do have some "cleaner" programs which remove temp files, they don't always do the trick. I'm trying to create a BAT file which will change to each Temp folder location, and list its contents. However, no matter how I type it, it always just shows C: drive and nothing else. This is how I type it in Notepad: cd c: dir /s /b *Temp pause cd g: dir /s /b *Temp pause cd v: dir /s /b *Temp pause What I don't understand is, thes…

Re: How to Disable "Access Denied"

Re: How to Disable "Access Denied" Hi, Additional information due to one response I received. Note: My friend never used a USB flash drive! "Access Denied" does not apply to "E:" drive where the flash ("thumb") drive was plugged in, and it has nothing to do with the flash drive's "format". I can see where this kind of security is VERY USEFUL at the work place so employees can't copy anything from the company's HDD to their flash drive. AVG UPDATE: Another friend informed me that AVG will discontinue updates for the FREE version of AVG in about a year. Afterwards, you have to pay for the updates. Br…

XP 64 OEM
by Guest z- 5 replies

Hi. Due to a physical issuel of cpu into motherboard I'm unable to upgrade my cpu and thus must install a new motherboard+cpu. Having only just become aware that OEM xp64 professional seems to have limitations regarding hardware upgrades - I'm wondering what my options are to avoid having to pay for another copy of a OS I already own and is for sole personal use only. The bottom line is, assuming that my OEM OS is "bound" to my motherboard, and the cpu is stuck (arm in wrong position and cant eject the chip) how do I upgrade my system without needing to purchase a new OS? Can I get an OEM to Retail upgrade as OEM was all that was availabe to me at …

Very slow SATA RAID under XP
by Guest Peter- 8 replies
Just rebuilt my PC with a SATA RAID hard drive array (mirror) using a Siig SATA-300 controller, and win XP. Last one was win2000, single SATA drive but used to be a RAID mirror too. All works fine but there is massive disk activity running certain apps which write a lot of small files. The activity takes a very long time, about 10-100x longer than it should, or used to under win2000. In particular, the exit newsgroup purging which Agent newsreader does is extremely slow. Big file reads and writes (say 50MB) are quick. Has anyone come across this under XP, or with certain SATA controllers? I have contacted Siig but they don't support their products. M…

SP3 and System File Checker
by Guest Michael T.- 8 replies

Since the release of SP2 I have used System File Checker (SFC) many times with my Windows XP CD-ROM which includes SP2. For those unfamiliar with SFC, or who have forgotten about this utility: Go to Start > Run and type sfc /scannow So my question is now that I have installed SP3 I would think running SFC using the aforementioned SP2 CD-ROM would no longer be viable? Your thoughts.
