Keyboard/Mouse issue
by Guest Robert_L_Ross- 0 replies

Sometimes when I'm on my laptop something happens where the shift lock gets 'reversed' (lock light off = uppercase [even special characters above the numbers] and lock light on = lower case [and still special characters]). At the same time, the mouse will appear as though I am selecting multiple items...from wherever the mouse was when this happened if I try to click a different area it seems as though I'm selecting everything between the first area and where I'm clicking...so a double click will result in opening everything between the first location and the click location. I've noticed this more on my laptop, but I've now had three requests from co-w…

Mapping a network drive and hide the connection to usrs
by Guest Kenny Nelson- 6 replies
I am currently working on a small application, created in VB5, that requires me to map to a network drive on a Win 2003 server when a user launches the application and disconect from the drive when the application is closed down. This is fairly straight forward to do, but here is the twist. The mapped drive that is created by the application should not be avaliable to the user within My Computer or Windows Explorer. Can this be done and how simple is it to do if it can be done? I have been looking around for the past couple of days trying to find some way of doing this but I have had no luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Kenny

Some Programs Are Inaccessible From Limited Account
by Guest Daddy- 2 replies
I have Windows XP Home SP 3. On my computer there is one Administrator account and one Limited account. I confess to not having used the Limited account for some time. Today I decided I should get back into the habit of using the Limited account whenever possible. When I logged in to the Limited account I quickly noticed that I could not use some applications I had previously been able to use. And I don't mean Administrator-type applications - I mean innocent things like Winamp (a media player.) Let's take Winamp as an example. Winamp still appears in the Limited account's start menu, but now when I click to launch it I get the flashlight and Windows eventually …

OT: APC BK650MI ...
by Guest RJK- 7 replies

Anyone know how to get XP Home to automatically shut-down, when there is a power outage ? Years ago I bought an APC Back-UPS 650 (not the "pro" version i.e. it didn't come with Powerchute CD and serial lead,...there is however a female RS232 port on the back of it.) ....I just bought on ebay, for 90p, an "APC basic signalling lead," which I understand is an RS 232 with unusual pin-outs and a resistor across two pins somewhere ! i.e. it's an APC 944-0020C http://www.apc.com/support/faq.cfm#5 ....and it's now plugged in ! I suspect there is some sort of comminication on the RS2323 lead, because if I go into XP power management | UPS tab and change …

What is the behavour of ups.exe ?
by Guest RJK- 3 replies
I recently got hold of an APC serial cable, and connected it to my old APC Back-UPS 650 (BK650MI) and in UPS Tab | Power options properties, several options became available, and I was able to select my APC model, and change some settings for it but, for example the "warnings" messages that I guess should have appeared, (when mains power was cut), didn't appear. Since installing the Powerchute Business edition, (which remived MS's ups.exe), which contains all sorts of remote network UPS controls that I don't really need, (but, was the only download form APC that detected and offered some "control" of the thing), and this was where I discovered that COM…

Missing Display icon in Control panel
by Guest Martin Ellis- 1 reply

The display on the onbpard ATI Radeon grahics system stared shaking and flashing badly, and would not allow resizing or changing of colour depth. It would allow changes in safe mode, but this caused the PC to hang with a black screen on boot up. I restarted in safe mode and removed the ATI drivers, then used a new PCIe-16 Nvidia graphics card. When running the CD, I got the message that Windows could not load the installer for Display. I booted from the CD and chose to repair the existing Windows installation (the screen after accepting the EULA), and all went well until being told that setup could not copy three files. Sorry but I didn't note the firs…

DLT Tape backup under XP?
by Guest Peter- 17 replies
How is this supposed to work? Under win2000, I used NTBACKUP.EXE and this worked fine. I have now moved the same tape hardware (an Adaptec 29160N SCSI controller and a Quantum DLT4 tape drive) to a newly built winXP machine and while the SCSI controller shows up in Control Panel (and it has the correct latest driver) the tape drive does not show anywhere, and NTBACKUP tries to backup to the floppy in drive A: and does not show any device options. I don't recall needing drivers for the tape drive itself... How is this supposed to work?

Up-grade to XP SP3
by Guest Laura- 3 replies
I have up-graded three computers to SP3 without any serious problems. However, my eldest son who lives away from home has a problem with his laptop. His laptop machine, presently with XP SP2, got half way through the installation phase when he got a BSOD with a message that a problem had occurred and that he should re-boot. When he managed to re-boot the machine it was automatically returned to SP2. I believe his problem stems from lack of HD space. His laptop only has 40 GB HD and I know he has hundreds of photographs stored on the HD. The SP3 download is quoted at 66.9 MB but how much hard disk space is required to perform the upgrade? Laura

Safe mode administrator has extra-large high contrast fonts
by Guest Harvey- 2 replies

In safe mode the administrator account has extra-large high-contrast fonts on the desktop. How can I reset them? .... and how did they get that way? (Normally changing a setting in safe mode only changes it in the non- safe-mode, right? And the administrator account only exists in safe mode, right?) Thanks, Harvey

Windows XP SP2 hangs while writing roaming profiles
by Guest Michele Crudele- 1 reply

Suddenly, after months of smooth operation, without any apparent change in updates, SP, configurations, policies, etc, most of the users of our AD domain (on Windows Server 2003 R2) had their Windows XP SP2 PC blocked after a few minutes. In many cases they have to switch off the PC: the CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work. Monitoring the opened files on the server where the roaming profiles are stored we discovered that some of the configuration files of many applications (Office 2007, OpenOffice 2, Firefox, etc.) where listed as No access ("nessun accesso" in Italian) insted of Reading or Writing. The strange behaviour is that some files can write on the APPDATA (Appli…

Logon Diverted
by Guest Patrick Whittle- 6 replies

Hi, Has anyone seen the XP sign-on page start displaying that of previous Windows? Instead of having two icons (2-user accounts) on the first screen after booting, I now have a Windows dialog window where I have to type (rather than clicking my name) my account name; I then click OK. It looks like Windows for Workgroups and the older Microsoft Windows. Any idea of what has happened?

I would like the option of having a choice. How do I get it? Thanks,

Can I delete the blue uninstall
by Guest John Vanini- 19 replies
I have almost 500 MB of blue uninstall updates (such as $NtUninstallKB835732$) in the Windows folder and wondered whether I can delete these or not. They are, obviously, from their names, uninstall programs, so, as my windows is working fine, do I need these? I have searched the Internet but am more confused by the answers I have read than I was before! I've been to the MS website and that didn't help in the slightest! I'd be grateful for any help, please.

Can't rename files after XP's SP3 update
by Guest ladygr- 4 replies
HELP!!! Is there a fix? I just updated with SP3 for XP Pro and now if I do a slow double click (select and then click again) to rename a file I just get a flat "clunk" sound. If I right click, the "rename" option is not there. I uninstalled the update through add/remove programs. That didn't help, so I did a system restore. That gave me back the ability to rename files, but I lost my internet (both wired and wireless). I reversed the restore, got internet back, but lost "rename" again. I really don't want to reformat since it was so hard to find the drivers after downgrading from Vista (still looking for some). Any help is appreciated.

HOW TO AVOID LOGGING ON?
by Guest Kansenji- 10 replies
I am the only user of my home PC & on installation I left the Log-On password fields blank. Thereafter my XP PC logs on automatically on start-up, without ANY user intervention. A relative is sick of having to log on to her home PC; how can she set hers up like mine? Is it just a matter of her "changing" her password and leaving the new password field blank? I wish MS would explain why it thinks logging on is necessary on a single user home PC! There must be millions of Windows users wondering "Why do I need to Log On?" -- Colin Samson
