Directory sort order
by Guest Sandy- 4 replies
On my old 'puter the sort order for a directory listing such as A:/ ... w/be as such: t619 t6190 t6191 & so on on the new 'puter or PC, I get: t619 t6190 t695 t6950 t6191 ......... with other numbers/file names in between So, it sorts according to the first letter & the second letter (or in this case number), but then it loses the order. I want (as I had before) all the t619 series listed together & in alpha/numeric order. Old system was Windows98 SE, this new system in XP ... not that I think it should make a difference. Ideas? -- Sandy

same USB printers cause new hardware detection
by Guest Terry R.- 9 replies

On one network I admin, we have over a dozen laptops used for "check-in" purposes. When I configure them for printing, I use just one of the printers, all of which are identical. Whenever many of them are used, I would get reports that printing didn't work. Yesterday I reconfigured 3 laptops with one printer and checked okay. Yet when a user hooked 3 laptops to 3 printers, two of them wouldn't print. I was onsite at the time and found that Windows had re-installed drivers and created copies of the printer and the default printer no longer would print at all. A few of the laptops still have LPT1 ports and printing that way isn't an issue. Only USB…

When it reboots, I get a message saying that Windows recovered from a serious error with the following codes: BCCode=f4 BCP1=00000003 BCP2=847A56E8 BCP3=847A585C BCP4=805C7632 OSVer=5_1_2600 SP=2_0 Product=256_1. Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks for any input.

by Guest Bill Board- 5 replies

I'm looking for a utility that will track everything that happens when an application is installed. What files are written, what registry entries are made, etc. I had such a utility many years ago, but I can't seem to find it. I find a lot of keyloggers when I search in google, but that's not what I'm looking for. Any help would be great. Thanks, Bill

Test page printed after each print sent to the printer
by Guest AAaron123- 10 replies
Every time I print a page on my HP1220c printer I get what I think is a test page printed after the one I want. My red in is not showing but for what I'm printing that doesn't matter. OS is XP. I deleted the printer, rebooted and then added the printer back (I let XP search and find the printer) but that did not fix it. I've looked at the printer's properties but can't find anything that seems like it would cause the extra page to be printed. Do you know what night be causing this and how to fix it? Thanks in advance

Mouse and Keyboard Property windows
by Guest Greg T- 5 replies

I'm having a problem with the mouse and keyboard property windows. I have a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 1000(mouse is Wireless Optical Mouse 2000/keyboard is a Wireless Multimedia Keyboard). The property windows for the mouse and keyboard open but the text is too large for the window consequently the windows don't show all the text and some of the buttons either show partially or not at all. The kicker is that this doesn't happen with all the tabs. The mouse tabs that are affected are: Buttons, Scrolling, Activities and Wireless. The keyboard tabs affected are: Key Settings and Wireless. OS is WinXP Pro SP3. Mouse and keyboard drivers version are 6.2. If …

Just installed SP3 on a Motion LS800. Now it can't access the SD card slot. It was also failing to boot and would not even enter safe mode when I tried booting with a known good card in the slot. Microsnots has a KB article for a similar problem for SP2 and sent me the hotfix for that, but it doesn't work with SP3. Any ideas? thanks, gene

RE: I eventually get this error 0x8DDD0004 on the MS update page Hi, just found this post and found it very interesting as i experienced the same problem. Then the admin account appeared to lose priviledges. Shortly afterwards Windows XP crashed completely - wouldn't boot - so I reinstalled the OS. I strongly suspect an infection, despite a clean bill of health from Norton 360. I wonder how your computer is? The people at Update Help where extremely useful! by Guest Joe Elias- 13 replies

I have Dell with XP Pro, 2GB RAM, 80 GB hd. I was getting 100 % CPU usage when I had 1GB RAM, then I upgraded to 2 GB RAM. I continue to get 100% usage. I noticed that the commit Mem is around 600 MB/3925 MB. I don't know how to increase the commit to reduce the times the CPU usage goes to 100%. Appreciate your ideas. Regards. Joe

How to Disable "Access Denied"
by Guest Brad- 2 replies
Hi, Since I have a dial-up connection, a friend of mine, who has DSL, downloaded the free AVG version 8 (45.5MB) onto his Windows XP computer's HDD. I went to his house, but I wasn't able to copy the file to my USB flash ("thumb") drive due to "Access Denied". Also, I couldn't copy ("Access Denied") a photo.jpg, he wanted me to have, from his HDD to the flash drive. Note: He uses AVG anti-virus in his computer. I realize this is protection, but he nor I knew how to disable this "protection" on his computer in order to allow access. How do you disable this "protection" to allow access? Thanks in advance, Brad B…

Can't Log On
by Guest Daddy- 4 replies

I have Windows XP Home SP 3. There are two user accounts on my computer: one Administrator and one Limited. Say I'm working in the Limited account. I decide to log off, which returns me to the Welcome screen. Now I try to log on to my Administrator account - but I can't, because there's no cursor in the white box where I type my password. Clicking inside the white box does not help. Still no cursor. I can't enter my password. Keyboard key presses do not register. I can't log back on to my Limited account either because there, too, I can't enter my password. The only way to get into either of my accounts is to restart the computer. How can I fix this? Thanks for y…

fixboot/fixmbr: is target declaration required?
by Guest idiotprogrammer- 2 replies

I installed XP SP 2 32 bit on a PC with one hard drive and an AMD 64 bit processor. The one hard drive has two NTFS partitions. partition #1 (aka C:) has xp sp 2 installed on it. partition #2 is empty. I installed it and MIGHT have upgraded to SP 3 (I honestly don't remember). But it won't boot on its own. It never did (even before the possible SP 3 upgrade). It was a clean system I read through the xp docs on troubleshooting booting. When I went to Recovery Console with the install CD. it asks for Windows Administrator pw, and I logged on successfully. I'm at my c drive (c:\windows). I ran fixmbr and fixboot, but without declaring any target di…
