Can someone please help me repair Windows on my PC?
by Guest seanDgibbons- 1 reply

I have a good PC, but when I started it up this morning everything looked fine, the boot screen and everything else, but then it stayed on the Windows loading Screen: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/images/installing%20windows%20xp/xp%20install%2040.gif and then it reboots. It keeps repeating. I have Ubuntu also installed (via Wubi [Dual-boot machine]) and I could select that and it ran fine (using now). When I click to go into safe mode it sows a bunch of code and says it's going into Safe Mode. It then reboots once again! I've tried running the XP Setup CD But there's no repair option on the "Select Partition" Screen when XP is highlighted. I have a pr…

Something on my system is trying to connect to outside. But what???
by Guest Frank Dreyfus- 8 replies

Hi, Some process is making repeated attempts (every 5 seconds or so) to connect to ip: 216.168.41.231 TCP ports 135 and 524. That ip appears to belong to Digital Forest in Seattle, WA. Digital Forest appears to be a web hosting company. My firewall is blocking these attempts. It's the firewall log that alerted me to this situation. I'd like to kill the process that's doing this, but have no idea how to find the process. Netstat is no help b/c there is no open connection; just an attempt. Any ideas how to track this down? Thanks, Frank

Auto PC Shutdown
by Guest Bishoop- 7 replies
I'm looking for a utility that will automatically shutdown (power off) WinXP Pro after a user specified period of time of no keyboard or mouse activity. I'm tired of the SO's laptop running without use for hours on end. The darn thing sucks in dust and plugs the cooling fan and heatsinks. I've had to take it apart once to clean out the gunk. Laptops are no fun to disassemble and re-assemble. Any suggestions? Asking politely to have it shut down manually when not it use just doesn't work. I know, get a new SO. Thanks for any suggestions.

by Guest Stewart Fluney- 4 replies

I have the free version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007 program and have recently been trying to contact their Support Forums (through their web page) without success. The web page address is lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?. I have tried to contact them by e-mail as well without success. My problem is trying to send or reply to a message on their web page. I cannot find where you click or where it shows "Send Message". Could you please help me with this? I've never had this problem before; there's always been a place to click to send a message as far as I know. Perhaps it is missing all of a sudden and I'll have to uninstall and re-install. I have …

SP3
by Guest philo- 21 replies

FWIW: I've instsalled SP3 final and have been running it for 24 hours now...and found that there have been no problems at all. My AMD XP2500 with 2 gigs of RAM runs noticably better. Up until SP3 was installed it always seemed slightly sluggish...but now it runs the way I had always hoped it to. I don't think I've ever seen an SP actually improve performance... I must say that MS did a good job this time!

Winword in Task Manager?
by Guest Tident- 1 reply

I understand that using Word as my email program puts WINWORD in the task manager. My problem... I run multiple email profiles which require opening and closing multiple times per day; as a result sometimes multiple versions of "WINWORD" are left running in Windows Task Manager using memory. Now, my question... Anybody aware of a short cut for closing all the open WINWORD in Task manager? I typically CTR-ALT-DEL, click on each occurrence and hit "end process"; there's got to be a shorter route. Running XP Professional, SP3 and Office Professional 2003. -- Have a great day:) TIdent

I'm trying to run: %comspec% /K runas /user:scans "ScanFiles.exe" When I run this within the current user (ATU4) it runs fine. When I run it from a different computer with a Remote Procedure Call I get an error SAYING: Enter the password for scans: Attempting to start ScanFiles.exe as user "ATUUSER4\scans" ... RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - ScanFiles.exe 87: The parameter is incorrect. When I look at Security for Scanfiles.exe it shows for ATUUSER4\Scans that it has Read and Execute rights. I have tried changing the user to administrator with the administrator password and it produced the same error. Then I signed on as administrat…

Restart the computer
by Guest Humpty Dumpty- 1 reply

Using the "turn off computer" and then the "restart" option does not work normally. The computer shuts off, and then opens the black options window (safe mode, start windows normally, etc). Selecting either "start windows normally", or "last known good configuration" do not work. Only a hot shutdown and then restarting loads windows back. The same happens if I chose the "reboot" option from a program (i.e. after installing an update). Any advice will be appreciated. Humpty

I have a Toshiba Satellite M115 S3094 O/S: Windows XP Pro SP2 After taking over 20 minutes to restart via Start/Turn of Computer/Restart I got the screen saying that the computer may have shutdown to save some files or a power outage or someother improper shutdown occured. It gave me options on how to restart the computer such as restart normally; last known good configuration; safe mode (3 or 4 different variations of that). Nothing would restart the computer. Just kept cycling to that shutdown error page. I rebooted the computer with the Toshiba Recovery Disk and re-formatted the HDD. I scheduled a disk check and the first 4 steps cyc…

I go to do a standard repair install on a hard drive I have just cloned using Acronis Disk Director. Using an XP Home Retail disk at the point in which I need to type my product key I get an invalid product key. After I look a bit closer I noticed The window is titled Windows XP proffessional Upgrade. Why would it tell me it is XP proffesional Upgrade when it is neither of those things?

When I preview a pic in Windows Picture and Fax viewer, the color surrounding the picture is a grey color (238,238,238 or #EEEEEE). There are times when I need to view smaller pics, whose backgrounds are white or transparent, that it becomes difficult to see if it is actually white or transparent - especially in low light or late at night. How do I change the surrounding color to a darker color? Thanks.

CMD.exe batch for net use
by Guest Richhall- 1 reply

Apologies if I should be using msdos batch group. I am using Widnows XP and had a simple batch that had 3 variables at the prompt to create a net use connection: net use u: /d rem ***************************************** rem %1 is IP address of target rem %2 is username rem %3 is password rem ----------------------------------------- net use u: \\%1\c$ %3 /user:DOMAIN\%2 /PERSISTENT:NO pause However I want this to be run from a file not the command line. I've searched the group but can's see it without using 3rd party software how I can prompt for the %1 etc. I am not exactly sure what I am doing, but got this far: set /p IP=Enter Target IP: set …
