Xp over Vista
by Guest David- 5 replies

I ahve Vista Home Premium on my Dell 530. I am disenchanted with Vista. (DUUHHH) My wife has XP Pro on her Dell laptop. I got a Windows XP Pro cd from Dell and am thinking of reformatting my Vista drive with XP. The cd I got from Dell says not to use on a new computer. Do they (Dell) really know more than you folks? Can I really use this cd to reformat my PC and get rid of Vista? I would, of course, have to reinstall all my drivers. Would that be a problem seeing that they have been working on a Vista machine? As always, any help and information is greatly appreciated.

Some USB Storage Devices Don't Work - But Some Do
by Guest Lost Texan- 12 replies

My current challenge is a new Maxtor Onetouch 4 external hard drive. Windows detects it as an "other device" and gives error code 28 asking for a driver. It never shows up as a hard drive. The Maxtor is plug and play and should not need a driver. The Maxtor works fine when plugged into another computer, so I know the drive and USB cable are okay. I also tried three different USB ports that work fine with other items (like my printer) plugged into them, so the ports are okay. I am running XP home edition, with Service Pack 3 installed. This issue seems to be part of a pattern that has emerged in the last 6-12 months. Windows recognizes one Ipod …

Prevent duplicate instance of scheduled task
by Guest Brian- 2 replies

Is it possible to prevent a scheduled task from opening while a prior instance is still running? I have a data transfer application that needs to run every couple of minutes. If it finds there is nothing to do, it should run for perhaps 10 seconds; if it finds that there is data to move, it can run for upwards of 20 minutes. Because the task schedule time between runs is less than the potential runtime of the application, I need to ensure that no extra instances of the scheduled task open while it is already running.

Dates on files written to CDs
by Guest Bobbi- 3 replies

Files written to CDs become read-only, even after being copied back to a hard disk. Also, the file's date becomes the copying date, not the date the file was originally created or modified. Is there some way to retain the original creation date of a file under these circumstances? Bobbi
