Problem Defragging Large File 1 2
by Guest ColTom2- 44 replies

Hi: I had a file that was over 13BG in size and the Windows defrag process went fine defragging the file per se. However, when the defrag process tried to move this large file it always hung up at 3%. As long as the file itself was being defragged everything was OK, but when it came to trying to move this file is where it always hung up. Does anyone have a solution to defragging a large file of this size within Windows XP? Thanks

Offline File Missing after Account Problems
by Guest tmpotvin- 0 replies
Hello! We have a user who currently has offline files setup. They were working on a document throughout the day and made sure to save the document as well. For some strange and unknown reason, their domain account was deleted at some point during the day. The user was then advised to reboot, and after rebooting and logging back in, the folder redirections and offline files were setting up, but the new file was missing. Is it possible that the file was not uploaded to the server? Also, is it possible to still find this file in the CSC folder? Please let me know as soon as possible, and thanks in advance for the help!

How to make a program default for all users.?
by Guest Abertech- 1 reply
I need to make a program as the default so that it opens up mp3 files by default and not windows media player. This is easy to do for myself when I am logged in - I just associate mp3 files with the application I want via Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types. This doesnt work when another user logs in as it reverts mp3's back to WMP. The program I want people to use does not appear in the Set Program Access and Defaults options so I cant set it there either. Is anyone able to help me out on this? TIA.

Three previously bootable partitions are no longer bootable. After booting partition C and looking into the partition console window, I see that 1 previously bootable partition is no longer visible. The other 2 are visible. When I try to boot the 3 previously bootable partitions, the following occurs: With regard to 2 of them, the boot process reaches the blue Wxp screen but the words "windows is starting up" never appears. With regard to the other, when I try to boot it the message below appears: Windows could not start because the following is missing or currupt: <windows root> system 32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the above file. …

Please help me I think I am going crazy. The problem started with recurring hard boot after I navigate around googlearth. It freezes the computer after about 4 or 5 operations. Example I load an address, zoom into the maximum magnification, and move the focus to a little bit south. After a couple of tries I was presented with "Active Desktop Recovery". I clicked on the "Restore my Active Desktop" and received the following error message, titled: "Internet Explorer Script Error." I click cancel and that didn't work so I clicked retry. Sorry I am not sure of the what happened next but I loaded IE. I tried rebooting. Ever since I get a working cop…

I like to have my program listing customized (not in alphabetical order) and in IE I customize my favorites listing (again not in alphabetical order). Every time I restart my PC running XP Media addition, the programs and favorites have rearranged themselves back into alphabetical order. How do I stop this behavior and allow my changes to stay? Thanks and have a nice day.

Voice Recogniton Software - Using SDK
by Guest VoxBox-Richard- 1 reply

Hello, I am trying to write a program in C++ using the SDK. The aim of the software is to turn voice commands into MIDI events. I have already written the library for the MIDI commands. I'm just struggling with the voice recognition aspect. The main problem being the vast number of words in the Windows library. I am looking for a way to restrict the options so that it only tries to recognise certain words- such as letter names, flat, sharp etc. Can you recommend a way to go about doing this? Thank you. R.

USB Mouse is immediately blocked and uninstalled
by Guest dk_- 8 replies

Any USB mouse is immediately blocked and uninstalled. The mouse is recognized and works for 1 to 2 seconds. The machine is running XP SP2. The mouse is recognized and workes for 1 to 2 seconds then the mouse is usless, but the light is still on. A PS/2 mouse will work fine. Each time a mouse is connected, it is recognized, identified, and then XP finally says the device is ready for use. During that cycle I can often move the mouse pointer for 1 or 2 seconds, then it stops working. The mouse does not show up in the Device Manager. I tried a Microsoft and a Logitech mouse. Both work fine in other machines. I tried to add new hardware, and a US…

Security settings in safe mode and USB mouse
by Guest dk_- 2 replies

Regarding the strange USB mouse install problem that I asked about earlier this morning, (Subject: "USB Mouse is immediately blocked and uninstalled"), I am thinking I might have messed up some default security settings one day when I was looking around in safe mode and was trying to change some priviledges for access to the hidden install partition. I probably messed something up then (or maybe not). How can I set the security back to default, i.e., the normal default settings for the Administrator User (me)? Or check to see if something is set to prevent the installation or use of a USB mouse. Thanks. -Dennis -- Dennis Kessler http://www.…

I have missed the 30 day registration period to register Win XP. I now get an error message when I power up my computer stating "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?" Selecting either Yes or No has no effect other that bringing me back to the Welcome screen and the user (Me) "Logging Off" This is a legal, purchased Windows XP Pro. What's happening? How do I register. I have tried registering in Safe Mode but it will not allow me to do so.

Using a router, DSLonnection, two XP Pro SP2 PCs, how do I set up a simple P2P network? I've done this before but noticed my two PCs can no longer see each other. I don't believe I did more then enable file/printer sharing and use the same log on creditials on both PCs. But it's not working. What else do I need to do. Both PCs can access the internet through the router. Thanks, Tom
