System Restore no longer working after hard drive swap
by Guest Joe Starin- 3 replies

Hi. Recently replaced a "full" 60GB HD with a 320GB HD. Using Western Digital's Data Lifeguard tools, I copied everything from the old drive to the new. After some minor issues, the Dell PC with Windows XP SP2 boots from the new drive - the old drive has been removed. Everything boots/runs exactly as it should with one exception: I just discovered that System Restore is not working. Am getting this message.. RUNDLL An exception error occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl",System Seems like an odd file name. Is this a DRM issue? Related to the hard drive swap? WD not very ea…

by Guest Tony Meloche- 6 replies

I am running XP Home, SP3. I am having a repetitive problem at shutdown that shows up in Event Viewer as follows: Faulting application, version 0.0.0.0. faulting module uxtheme.dll version 6.0.2900.5512. fault address 0x000011f5. Help and Support Center merely tells me that they haven't any info regarding that specific problem. There are four copies of uxtheme.dll on my computer. The two from the i386 and $NTservicePackUninstall$ folders are version 6.0.2900.2180. The two from the Windows\System32 and Windows\servicepackfiles\i386 folders are version are 6.0.2900.5512 (evidently a more recent version. The message indicates the problem is with…

File Type Descriptions
by Guest MikeGaudet- 2 replies

How can I change the File Type descriptions for established Extensions? E.g., how can I change BMP, JPE, JPEG, JPG, PSD, and TIFF (which isn't even listed in Folder Types | File Types) all to read a File Type of "Graphic File"? I 'thought' I used to be able to change it in the Folder Options dialog box but while it allows me to make a change, it doesn't seem to take effect when I save it. Thanks

The differences between cmd.exe and command.com, in practice, for running DOS apps
by Guest Bill in Co.- 14 replies

Has anyone played around with this extensively to know just what DOS applications "command.com" (16 bit shell) will run successfully, that "cmd.exe" (32 bit shell) cannot (under XP)? Note: "cmd.exe" is newer and more "featured", of course (and also handles long filenames), but isn't quite as compatible for running some DOS apps. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experiences they can share on this. I seem to have noticed a few already, but was curious.

Installing CPU fan
by Guest attilathehun1- 23 replies

I just bought a Zalman CPU fan model #CPNS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler. Now, I've built PCs and usually I install the stock fan and use a screw driver to push down on the side to get it clipped onto the mobo. This fan seems a little too big and do you think I should use the same procedure to install this one? I don't want to mess it up. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, attilahthehun1 PS Gary, I don't need to be reminded to bring it to a PC tech. Otherwise I'd not be asking this question. Gary, if you've ever installed a Zalman, which I doubt, you'd know what I'm talking about…

driver verifier
by Guest rd_root- 4 replies

How do I read a prefetch file? I know one of three drivers in the Kaspersky software program is bad. I started the driver verifier and it caught the culprit. I have been going back and forth with them doing the same thing over and over, with the same result...and we know that that is. I think it is now finally going to be escalated to 3rd level support..... so how do I figure out how to read the prefetch file to figure out which of the three it is... without the software I have no BSODs at all... with the software when it's running.... BSODs galore... Thanks!

File hangs on when clicked on
by Guest skip- 3 replies

Hi all, I have an 80GB IDE drive that is used only for "My Documents". For some reason anytime I click on any file in this folder, the PC either locks up or is extremely slow in opening it. Most times I have to do a hard reboot to get the system working again. I have run Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-aware, Hijack this, Sophos, and Micro Trend on line with no problems. I have run MS memory tester and several hardware tester and again, no problems. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts to help I would appreciate it. Since this is my documents, I really need to get these files back to operational mode. Thanks for any input. Dan Dan (Still going in circles)
