Hi all, At the moment I'm working on my new system. And there are a quite a few things I need to set before I'm happy with it. One of the things I hate is how XP handles ' and ". At the moment I need to follow it by pressing the space bar before the quote or double quote appears. But that´s not the question of this post. I´m wondering how I can disable the text balloons that pop up from the system tray? I dislike messages instructing me to press here to view/hide icons, and the like. At the same time, in the future I would like to develop a program that uses pop ups from the system tray. I gather that the program will not work when I've disabled …

Help...Pressing C on the keyboard opens My Computer and pressing Dopens the Calculator... We have Windows XP on one of our office laptops. For some reason out of the blue any time we press C on the keyboard My Computer opens and pressing D opens the Calculator program. No other keys open anything else. We've run a number of different virus scans, spyware programs, HiJackThis etc and have found nothing. System Restore gives us a "System Restore Incomplete" message each time. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

When I attempt to install Windows XP on a 3 GHz clone, it gets to the point where it says that it's "Checking hardware", then the screen goes black, the hard drive light stays on, and it hangs like that. Is there anything I can do to get past this or troubleshoot the problem?

character map not working
by Guest prs98520- 3 replies

The Windows Character Map is not working on my system. I can open the character map, access various fonts, etc., but when I try to select a character, nothing happens. I have the same result when I access the "insert symbol" function in Word or Publisher. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the character map with the same result. I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Latitude D630, and as far as I can remember, the character map has not worked since I started using this PC (about 9 months).

I know this a Windows XP section, but I cannot find Vista in htis newsgroup. XP had a great search capability from Start that allowed me to search for specific words in a document, and to do this from from To and From dates. However, Vista has changed the Start search feature, and i do not know how to do a broad search for a document I know has a unique word between specific dates. Can you give me instruction, or know a good article reference with the above example for doing a search on the whole computer? Thanks

I have downloaded and installed SP3 three times already. Just now I got a notice, next to the clock, that SP3 was downloading and then got another one that it was ready to install. I'm trying to turn off these notices So I go to System Properties>Automatic Updates. But once I get there I already have a check mark in "Notify me but DON'T AUTOMATICALLY DOWNLOAD or install them." Still the OS always downloads SP3 and there's nothing I can do to stop it from downloading. What's happening and how can I stop it from doing this every day. J

As far as I can see there are two methods of opening/adding an additional *.pst file for an existing Outlook 2003 installation: At first I can simply open a *.pst file by using the menu file->open On the other side I can do it through the menu file->Data file management->Add What is the difference ?
