Sharing and Security

I have a share on my WinXP Laptop that I want to be able to access at work. I have set up a share on my C drive, took out Everyone and added in my credentials (which is different between my Laptop and Desktop). I gave my credentials full access (as it would be when I am directly logged on the machine). When I Map to the share on my laptop from my desktop the window comes up with all my folders showing (which I don't want), and then won't let me access them - which is fine since I am not authenticated. But it doesn't ask for authentication so I can get access to it. What else do I need to change to allow this? Thanks, Tom

Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off
by Guest tkbirdie- 14 replies
I'm running Windows XP Home. The power options for my computer is set to turn my monitor off after 10 mins - power saving. After 10 minutes, instead of turning the monitor off, it just goes back to the desktop. It was working fine yesterday. I have tried changing the minutes, but it just won't work. Any help would be appreciated. I'll check again tomorrow and see if it happens again. I have recently had Windows XP reinstalled, due to a problem with my computer. Everything was working fine until the monitor problem today.

encrypted folder question
by Guest njem- 3 replies
I would like to give a tech who does backup access to backup some files but keep them encrypted so the tech can't read the files. My backup program can do its own encryption but that doesn't help. The nightly backup fetches files from systems all over the building into a big backup. We're not going to set up separate backups for every user who has a couple of folders they want to keep private. If we encrypt the entire backup the tech would need that password for anytime someone says they need to restore a lost file. I thought I could just encrypt a subfolder of mine but... A: If I encrypt the folder and its contents then the backup says it can't access the fil…

Mouse Scheme Issue
by Guest benjamin.d.rogers@gmail.com- 2 replies

In an apparently random manner, my mouse pointer changes to an icon that is not even present in the mouse scheme! When I mouse over, for example, the toolbar portion of Excel, my mouse cursor changes to the pointer with hourglass (i.e. "wait") icon. My current "Working In Background" icon is set to the pointer cross-hair; the pinter with hourglass is not present anywhere in my current mouse scheme. And the behavior is random: sometimes mouse-over toolbar causes the change, other times mouse-over .cs file in edit mode of Visual Studio causes it. Not only is it annoying but it makes it difficult to work. For example, when editing code in Visual Studio, I ex…

Tiling or Cascading a group
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 1 reply
On my recently installed new XP Pro PC, say I have a group of files or folders in my taskbar (as a result of using the option 'Group similar taskbar buttons' in Taskbar Properties). When I r-click and select Tile Vertically, or Cascade, I do not get the correct result. Instead of seeing all the images, file or folders, one or more of the files or folders is missing. Study shows that it's hidden behind whatever was the last window with focus, before the group operation. The only way I can get the proper behaviour (e.g, see 3 images tiled or cascaded) is if I *first* use 'Minimize Group'. I'm sure this wasn't the case on my previous PC. Do others get same behavi…

windows won't start
by Guest Austin- 1 reply

our family computer with windows XP is not starting. it goes to the screen where you can choose the start up mode, and anything we select leads to a glimpse of the windows logo like normal, and then the computer restarts. something we've read says this may be due to a full hard drive, which is very possible. We've tried booting up with the disk and setting up windows that way, but it says the partition is full. we have a usb hard drive but we unplugged it. would plugging it back in and freeing up space on the computer's hard drive solve the problem? if so, how do we do that, since we can't get into windows? maybe we could set up windows on the external har…

by Guest Mr. Low- 5 replies

Hi, Earlier my Pc was not able to go into Hbernation or Standby Mde. The error message was “ The device driver for the ‘Communication Port (COM1) devices is preventing the machine from hibernation. Please close all application and try again. If problem persist, you may need to update the driver.” I uninstalled the the COM1 driver at the Device Manager and Scan for hardware changes and let the system to reinstall it back. This has solved the problem. However when I run Check Disk or PC Doctor Scan at OEM website, the problem recurs. I need to repaet the same process to enable it for hibernation. Is there anyway I could overcome this recurring…

Run As
by Guest Robert Lindholm- 1 reply

Hello: I'm having trouble making the necessary adjustments for an end user without local Administrative control on a Windows XP Pro PC to perform basic backup/restore operations with a SimpleTech external USB hard drive using ArcSoft TotalMedia backup software, short of granting Administrative control of the machine, which is practically implementable. I've tried several possibilities [below] without success and am wondering if there is a way to create an icon on the users desktop that will run the ArcSoft backup software with Administrative privilege? - Made end user a backup operator. - Transferred ownership of directories to end user. - Adjusted…
