Can't Open Programs
by Guest baileyboy2000- 1 reply

I currently run XP. When I click on my desktop icons to open a program, all that opens is the Properties Menu for the program. It doesn't matter if it is the browser on an application. I reboot the computer and then my programs are fine. But this happens several times a day, and just started yesterday. I did a complete anti-virus, spyware, registry check and did not find anything unusual. Any ideas what may be going on? -- jwalker

Indexing emails
by Guest K-Dawg- 1 reply

Hi All I am attempting to use the indexing service to index the emails that I have dragged and dropped into My Documents from Microsoft Outlook. I have read several sets of instructions on how to work the indexing service and the instructions say that files created in Microsoft Outlook can be indexed. I set it up and it starts scanning but then I can't get any search results when I query the catalog. I am pretty sure that I have checked all relevant boxes and changed the proper options and settings but I must be missing something because it's not doing it's job. I appreciate any help Thanks -- I have no idea what I''m doing

Automatic Updates
by Guest Patty- 10 replies

I had my Automatic Updates set to "Download updates, but let me decide when to install" and sometime today, an update came in. Since I was away from the computer, the update shield is now missing from the taskbar and when I choose "Turn off computer" it shows that it will install the downloaded updates when the system is turned off. Since I believe that this update is SP3 and I choose not to install it at this time, how can I tell Windows to skip this install, or how can I get the shield back in the taskbar so I can choose to not install it? It used to leave the shield in the taskbar until I made a choice, but now it appears to no longer do that. I know that I …

Failed Updates
by Guest gordo- 2 replies

I am sure this has been covered before, but I am using Outlook Express and I do not know how to search the archives. I have XP Pro installed with SP3 and plenty of memory, both disk and on board (2gb). I tried Microsoft Update and received the message that 11 updates failed to install, even after several tries. Is there a definitive fix to this problem? The updates apparently downloaded OK. Thanks, Gordo

MinAnimate continuously rechecking itself
by Guest Larc- 0 replies

I'm having a big problem in a system running XP Home SP3. In System Properties > Advanced > Performance Setting button, the first item is "Animate windows when minimizing or maximizing." I keep having to uncheck this box since it continuously rechecks itself. Oddly, when it has rechecked itself, what is supposedly the controlling setting in the Registry is still on "0" or false (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics > MinAnimate). How can this function turn itself on when the Registry setting still shows it turned off? I thought the Registry was the ultimate controller. I'm not aware of any other program that could be causing this.…

[i've inserted the x's for security.] --------- Totally meaningless to me! Any of the experts able to help please? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

No Windows sounds but do have WMP sounds
by Guest Another Brian- 2 replies

I'm so confused. I've just finished rebuilding an old Gateway PC. This morning I had Windows sounds (the logon ta-da and other beeps and boops) but audio CD's wouldn't make any sound. Playing wav files through WMP did not do anything. I then updated the audio drivers downloaded from Gateway for this PC. Now I can play any media through WMP, but the Windows sounds do not work. When I go into Control Panel | Sound and Audio Devices Properties, Volume tab, it says "No Audio Device". When I go to the Sounds tab and try playing any of the sounds such as Asterisk, I get the error message: Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav …

I have two dells both with XP.. They are not the same model. The older one has been having freeze up issues and probably just needs a operation reinstall. My new system came with XP. I loaded all of my programs.. and after a couple of months I added a second drive where I put Vista. After a short time I unplugged the XP drive and there it sat. First of all... the problem pc is my wifes.. What would happen if I put my old XP drive in hers... (please no jokes) moved all of her data and setting over and then took out her original drive. My drive has all the programs she would need. The programs on the new drive. Will they run ? And any other problems to…
